Chapter 17 New Type of Sickle

Bai Shiqing used to look down on Bai Jiaojiao for being so arrogant. They were born from the same mother. Bai Jiaojiao had just enjoyed a few years of luxury in the city, but in the end, weren't they from the same vine? What was so great about her?

But now Bai Shiqing really admires Bai Jiaojiao; having knowledge makes all the difference.

Bai Jiaojiao had no idea that her second sister's impression of her would change so quickly; she only wished that the sun would melt her.

When Shen Heng saw that Bai Jiaojiao's lips had turned white, he felt even more tormented than Bai Jiaojiao herself.

He never said anything caring, but just frowned and ordered, "Go back and make some lunch. You don't need to come in this afternoon. My brother and I are enough."

Bai Jiaojiao glanced at her watch; it was 11:30.

"It's okay, Heng-ge, I can manage. I'll come again this afternoon!"

Even with the straw hat covering her face, Bai Jiaojiao's cheeks were still as red as if she were ripe.

Shen Heng knew he couldn't change Bai Jiaojiao's mind, so he said to Bai Shihai frankly, "Brother, let your wife and aunt go back for a nap at noon. At this pace, there's no need to rush. We can finish it!"

Bai Shihai stopped what he was doing, wiped the sweat from his brow, and looked back at Deng Min and Bai Shiqing.

Deng Min and Bai Shiqing were also drenched in sweat. Their skin wasn't as delicate as Bai Jiaojiao's, and it looked a bit purplish and shiny from the sun, making them look even more exhausted.

Every family cherishes its daughter-in-law, so Bai Shihai immediately said, "That's right, we work fast. It's midday, so you women should go back and rest!"

Upon hearing this, Bai Shiqing immediately stood up with Deng Min and walked over to Bai Jiaojiao: "Little sister, let's go back and cook for the laborers!"

Bai Jiaojiao glanced at the progress in the field before nodding.

Shen Heng breathed a sigh of relief, and after the three walked away, he muttered, "There's really no way to deal with this little girl."

Upon hearing this, Bai Shihai was unsure of Shen Heng's meaning.

However, seeing that Shen Heng took the initiative to let Bai Jiaojiao go back to rest, Bai Shihai felt that Shen Heng should still care about Bai Jiaojiao.

Some men are like that: fierce outside, but doting on their wives like the plague at home.

Bai Shihai sincerely hoped that Shen Heng was such a man.

Bai Jiaojiao went home and took the zucchini and flour she bought at the supply and marketing cooperative yesterday to meet up with Deng Min and Bai Shiqing at the Bai family home.

When Deng Min saw the white flour Bai Jiaojiao brought, she hesitated for a moment before cautiously saying, "Jiaojiao, now that you're a wife, you need to learn how to manage a household. This is all refined white flour, it's not cheap. If you're making it for your brother-in-law alone, this is too much."

Bai Jiaojiao knew what Deng Min was thinking; she was simply afraid that if she ate their family's flour, Shen Heng would be angry.

"Sister-in-law, don't worry, Heng-ge won't be angry."

Deng Min was still somewhat intimidated by Bai Jiaojiao, and she dared not continue to persuade Bai Jiaojiao, fearing that Bai Jiaojiao might suddenly turn on her.

Having lived with Bai Jiaojiao for three years, Deng Min and Bai Shiqing both knew what kind of temper Bai Jiaojiao had.

The two dared not say much. Deng Min thought that at worst, her family could just compensate them with some noodles. After all, the tools Bai Jiaojiao brought to Bai Shihai this time had indeed helped them a lot. Even as a way of thanking them, they should send something over.

Thinking this, they all shut up and quickly started preparing lunch in the kitchen.

Everyone put in a lot of effort today, so we need to eat something substantial.

Bai Jiaojiao brought zucchini, which was grated into shreds and mixed with flour to make a batter. The batter was then spread into zucchini pancakes. The process was simple and convenient, and the pancakes contained both vegetables and rice, preventing them from becoming dry.

Although face cream is precious, Bai Jiaojiao didn't feel bad about using it at this time.

Bai Jiaojiao scooped up some more wheat flour, mixed it with cornmeal, added some starter, and waited for it to ferment. It would be ready by evening, and they would steam buns to eat.

Deng Min soaked the kelp in a basin of water, planning to make kelp and potato stew when she got back in the evening.

Bai Jiaojiao and Bai Shiqing were in charge of making pancakes. They made ten large zucchini pancakes, which were not even as thick as half a lip, but they were huge. Bai Jiaojiao thought to herself that she couldn't even finish one.

Bai Shiqing picked six cucumbers from the small vegetable garden in the yard, smashed them, cut them into chunks, and mixed them with minced garlic and salt. On a hot day, having a cold dish to eat is better than anything else.

With everything ready, Bai Shiqing went inside to deliver food to her father, Bai Zhiman.

Bai Zhiman stared at the white flatbread and glared at it: "What, are you tired of living?"

"Didn't the loudspeaker announce it today? Harvesting is in full swing! Big Brother's exhausted; he needs some good food to have the energy!"

Since injuring his leg, Bai Zhiman has become much more eccentric, and Bai Shiqing doesn't go along with him either, always speaking in a sarcastic and confrontational tone.

Bai Zhiman snorted and handed the plate to the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed): "I'm not doing any work, so I'm just eating this for nothing."

"My dad, hurry up and eat! Otherwise your son will come back and scold me, saying I'm abusing you."

Bai Shiqing didn't have time to coax Bai Zhiman. She wanted to be a dutiful and caring daughter, but unfortunately, she didn't have the means. Everyone was incredibly busy right now, and there were two people in the fields whose bellies were rumbling.

Bai Zhiman watched Bai Shiqing leave in a hurry, and the door closed again. His eyes darkened for a moment.

He let out a deep breath and muttered, "Who says girls are all like warm cotton-padded jackets? This one in my family is a big firecracker."

"Manzhi, come here, take this and share it with your brother!" Deng Min called her daughter over and left half a pancake for the two children, enough for them to eat.

Bai Manzhi is six years old this year, and she also has to take care of her two-year-old brother, Bai Manlin, who is still unsteady on his feet.

Bai Manzhi entered the kitchen, glancing furtively at Bai Jiaojiao as if afraid she wouldn't let her eat such good food.

In the past, whenever there was something delicious or useful at home, Bai Jiaojiao would always fight for it. If any of them dared to compete, they would be stabbed in the face by Bai Jiaojiao, both openly and secretly.
