Chapter 201 Marriage Certificate

"What happened in the end? Did they get divorced? How could they get divorced when Zhou Yanshan wasn't home?" Bai Shiqing's eyes were practically green with envy as she listened to the gossip.

Yao Aiting said, "I don't know, my husband won't let me continue watching."

Yao Aiting's husband is an old crew member of the fleet. When Zhou Fukun was the captain, the two families had a fairly close relationship. They would usually call each other "Aunt Zhou" this and "Aunt Zhou" that. Now that she has lost so much face, it is not right to kick her when she is down.

Hearing that the matter was not over yet, Bai Shiqing made a move to get off the kang (a heated brick bed): "No, I have to go and see."

Bai Shiqing has been staying at home for the past few days and is getting restless. If she misses out on such a great commotion, she'll regret it for a long time.

"Sis, come on, it's a mess over there. What if someone accidentally bumps into you? Just stay home. I bet Uncle Shiqing is there. If you want to know, just ask him when he gets back."

Bai Jiaojiao didn't let Bai Shiqing get up. What a joke! If she hadn't kept an eye on her sister, Li Shuxian would have hated her to death.

“Oh dear, what my father-in-law says is no substitute for seeing it with your own eyes.”

"Shiqing, your little sister is right, your health is important. Hey, Jiaojiao, why don't you go and see her? I'll stay here with your sister and keep an eye on her for you."

Yao Aiting urged Bai Jiaojiao to go over there, wanting to wait for her to return and hear the latest news.

"Yes, yes, you go over there, come back and tell us. Don't worry about me."

Such an interesting thing, it would be a shame not to go and see it, Bai Shiqing quickly waved to Bai Jiaojiao.

"Sister, I don't want to go." Bai Jiaojiao watched Yu Wenli and Li Xiulian exchanging glances in the pigsty but ignored them. It wasn't anything good anyway, so why should she go?

"Could you go and take a look for me? It's such a pity I can't see it with my own eyes."

Bai Jiaojiao eventually went to the Zhou family's house. There were still many people crowding around the Zhou family's house, which showed that the matter had not yet been resolved.

"Why are you here, little sister!" Li Shuxian called out to Bai Jiaojiao. Bai Jiaojiao squeezed through the crowd and said to him, "My sister wanted to come and see, but I stopped her. So, she sent me here as a scout."

Upon hearing this, Li Shuxian smiled and said, "Then you're too late. Aunt Zhou is already writing the divorce papers. Li Xiulian went home and brought back the radio and watch that the Zhou family had given her as betrothal gifts. She's just waiting for the last bit of the deal."

"A letter of divorce? Does that even work now?"

But Li Shuxian said, "What's the use of this or that? If you can't live together anymore, just separate. Zhou Yanshan isn't home right now, what can we do? Even if he doesn't want to separate, we can't stop him. By the time he comes back, Li Xiulian might already have a bunch of kids running around."

"Don't they have a marriage certificate? How can Li Xiulian be with someone else?" Bai Jiaojiao didn't understand.

An auntie chimed in, "It seems that Yanshan wasn't old enough when they got married, so they didn't register their marriage. Later, Yanshan rarely stayed at home for more than a few days a year, so I guess they never went to register it."

Bai Jiaojiao then understood.

No wonder Li Xiulian dared to come and cause trouble. They don't even have a marriage certificate. As long as she and Yu Wenli are willing, Zhou Yanshan is just a joke.

As they were talking, Zhou's mother's voice came from inside: "Here you go! Take it and get out! I'm telling you, don't ever cross our street again!"

Then, Zhou's mother wailed, "Why is my life so miserable? I married such a heartless daughter-in-law! Shameless thing! Yanshan, why don't you do anything about your mother?!"

Zhou's mother sat on the muddy ground, patting the ground and kicking up a cloud of dust.

Bai Jiaojiao looked around but didn't see Li Lide. She guessed he was too embarrassed to come over.

Li Xiulian quickly emerged from the crowd, beaming with joy. She carefully tucked away the so-called letter of divorce that Zhou's mother had written for her and headed towards the pigsty.

She probably went to tell Yu Wenli the good news.

"You mean she doesn't have a husband's family now, and her own family doesn't care about her anymore, so she's really planning to live in a pigsty in the future?"

Li Shuxian and Bai Jiaojiao went home together and started talking on the way.

Bai Jiaojiao smiled meaningfully: "Don't worry, she'll have a place to stay."

Li Shuxian seemed like a good comrade, completely unaware of the ulterior motives between Li Xiulian and Yu Wenli.

“My dad won’t arrange a house for her; there aren’t that many empty houses in the village,” Li Shuxian shook his head.

Now, only the house left by Old Mrs. Su is left in the village. It was donated to the village by her family. How could they let Li Xiulian take advantage of such a good thing?

“The fact that they can come to divorce so confidently means they must have a way out, so brother-in-law, don’t worry about it.”

"Yes, my only worry right now is your sister. She's been in a really bad mood these past few days. I don't even dare to breathe loudly in the house. If I breathe too loudly, she thinks I'm bothering her and that I'm annoying."

Li Shuxian shook his head.

He seemed to be complaining, but his face was full of happiness.

Bai Jiaojiao pouted. "It's really tough being a guy. I understand."

Li Shuxian still had work to do in the fields. He took the opportunity to glance at Bai Shiqing on his way back from watching the commotion, and then immediately went back to the fields.

Bai Shiqing grabbed Bai Jiaojiao and asked, "Are you really divorced? How did you get divorced?"

“An aunt said that the two of them did not get a marriage certificate at the time, so Zhou’s mother wrote a letter of divorce on behalf of her son, and that’s how they got divorced.”

Bai Shiqing clicked her tongue and shook her head: "The Zhou family is so unethical. What era are we living in? They still don't get a marriage certificate. It's their own fault that their wife ran off with someone else!"

Bai Jiaojiao repeated her words: "They said that Zhou Yanshan was not old enough to receive it back then, so it was delayed for a long time."

"What will happen to Li Xiulian now? Will she be able to go back to her parents' home? Wasn't it said that she had a complete falling out with her family because of the pig theft?"

Bai Jiaojiao said, "She went back to the pigsty. I guess once she comes out of the pigsty, she'll go straight home with Yu Wenli."

Bai Shiqing looked at her with disgust: "Li Xiulian has given up all hope. If she goes home with Yu Wenli, how will she face anyone? Who in the village will respect her?"

"They might even be smug about it. Didn't they say Yu Wenli was going back to the city? He's been talking about it for a year now, why hasn't he gone back yet?"

Yao Aiting asked from the side.

She knew that Bai Jiaojiao and Yu Wenli had been involved for a period of time, but she never dared to ask before. Today, with Bai Shiqing here to embolden her, she finally dared to ask Bai Jiaojiao about it.

Bai Jiaojiao didn't care: "He's lying. If he really had that kind of ability, would he be suffering in a pigsty?"

Yao Aiting was puzzled: "Huh? You can use this to lie to people? I don't think any new educated youth have come to our village this year. Maybe they really are going to call them back. Li Xiulian probably just wants to go to the city to enjoy a better life."

Bai Jiaojiao thought to herself that Yu Wenli did indeed follow the crowd back to the city in his previous life, but given his performance this year, the organization might not even agree to let him go back.
