Finding someone in the snow is extremely difficult, and Bai Shibao has been missing for two days now. Given the frigid weather, he is most likely already dead.
Knowing that Bai Shihai and Bai Jiaojiao were looking for them, the military sent four people to go with them to search for them.
However, they were also warned that the troops would be withdrawing at noon tomorrow, and they were urged not to linger. They were also told to consider the safety of the four comrades who were going with them and not to do anything foolish.
Before leaving, Shen Heng glanced at Bai Jiaojiao, hesitant to speak, but ultimately did not voice his objection.
The three followed the four People's Liberation Army comrades back to the place where Bai Shibao disappeared.
The squad leader said, "It's around here, but we don't know the exact location."
The mountain was covered in snow, and a day of strong winds had blown away their footprints in the snow. They didn't even know what they would step on next, let alone be able to accurately find the location where Bai Shibao disappeared.
Bai Jiaojiao nodded and separated from Bai Shihai to begin their search.
They dared not shout, for the vibrations of the sound waves might activate the already dormant snowflakes.
The mountains of Yuancheng are very high and deep, covered in snow, which is despairing.
The four comrades who came with them also helped with the search without stopping. Even though the probability of finding it was extremely low, and even though they were just desperate to find the body, they still bent down and carefully searched.
A gust of wind blew by, and Bai Jiaojiao was blinded by the snowflakes blown up from the ground. Her face was already numb from the cold, but she could still feel the pain as the ice shards brushed against her face.
Bai Jiaojiao rubbed her face with the back of her hand, trying to open her eyes. In her blurry vision, there seemed to be faint dark colors, which stood out in the world invaded by white.
Bai Jiaojiao thought she was seeing things, but subconsciously she walked forward. She had only taken two steps when her feet hit the ground.
Bai Jiaojiao was startled, but she remembered the class monitor's reminder that she absolutely could not shout out at this time.
Fortunately, the snow only reached her thighs. Bai Jiaojiao stretched her foot forward to probe and found that it was getting deeper and deeper inside.
This might be next to a mountain road; in any case, it's a depression filled with snow.
Shen Heng noticed that Bai Jiaojiao seemed to have fallen and rushed over immediately.
"Heng-ge, look over there."
Bai Jiaojiao pointed to a dark green unidentified object about seven or eight steps away from her.
"Don't move, I'll go check on things."
Shen Heng broke off a tree branch and used it to probe forward, but after taking two steps he couldn't go any further: "It's too deep down here."
The terrain in the mountains is constantly changing, and with Chen Heng's height of nearly 1.9 meters, the path had already reached his upper thighs. He really couldn't walk any further.
Bai Jiaojiao didn't dare let Shen Heng take any more risks.
Others noticed their actions and rushed over from all directions.
When the squad leader saw the dark green object, he almost shouted excitedly, "That's our pack! It belongs to Bai Shibao!"
Upon hearing this, hope immediately rose in Bai Jiaojiao's eyes.
"But it's too deep here, maybe it's a ditch, and we can't get closer."
Bai Jiaojiao said.
"We'll get someone to dig it up!"
The soldiers were very efficient; in less than half an hour, four more people carrying shovels arrived at the foot of the mountain.
The eight men began digging toward the pack and found that it was indeed a ditch. Bai Shibao's pack was being lifted onto the snow by being hung high on a bush.
"Bai Shibao must be nearby, let's dig faster!"
After the squad leader finished speaking, Bai Shihai snatched the shovel from his hand.
Bai Shihai had worked the land all his life, and when it came to sheer physical strength, he was stronger than all of them.
Shen Heng also went to help. They dug deeper and deeper, almost restoring the entire ditch, but still couldn't find Bai Shibao.
Shen Heng went up and took off Bai Shibao's pack, handing it to Bai Jiaojiao.
Bai Jiaojiao seemed a little stunned for some reason. She didn't reach out to take it: "Brother Heng, can't you really find it?"
Shen Heng didn't speak; he lowered his hand holding the bag.
"Found it!"
Someone shouted in a low but extremely excited voice, and Bai Jiaojiao's eyes widened suddenly.
She ran toward the sound and found a hole about half a person's height by the ditch. Bai Shibao was curled up there, his face showing, and the snow on his body had not yet been swept off.
"Bai Shibao! Bozi!"
Looking at Bai Shibao's pale face, Bai Shihai couldn't accept such a cruel reality.
Bai Shibao's comrades continued digging, but Bai Shibao remained frozen in place, looking very stiff.
There's another person inside!
Behind Bai Shibao, there was a teenage girl huddled up, her eyes tightly closed, but she was shivering.
"This little girl is still alive! Quick, get her out of here!"
The squad leader immediately took off his cotton-padded coat and wrapped it tightly around the little girl. She weighed no more than 60 or 70 pounds, and he easily picked her up: "Then I'll take her back to the base first!"
"Human life is at stake," the squad leader said, and then left.
But what about Bai Shibao's life?
Bai Shihai knelt on the ground, his face ashen.
He failed to find his younger brother; how could he, as the eldest brother, explain this to his father?
"Let's take Bai Shibo back first."
It's freezing cold, there's no need to torture yourself here.
Bai Jiaojiao released her grip on Shen Heng's hand and staggered to Bai Shibao.
"I don't believe it. Logically speaking, with such a thick layer of snow, the temperature inside shouldn't be as cold as outside. Third Brother's cotton-padded coat and hood were on properly, and that little girl didn't freeze to death. How could he possibly freeze to death?"
Anyone who saw Bai Jiaojiao's current emotional state would think that she was making up an excuse because she couldn't accept the facts.
But for Bai Shihai, this also gave him hope.
"Bozi! Bozi! It's your older brother, wake up!"
Shen Heng stepped forward and placed his hand under Bai Shibao's nose. Perhaps because his fingers were numb from the cold, he could not feel Bai Shibao breathing.
He then placed his hand on the artery in Bai Shibao's neck.
Bai Shihai looked at him nervously.
Seeing Shen Heng put his hand inside Bai Shibo's cotton-padded coat, Bai Shihai couldn't help but ask, "Brother-in-law?"
"My heart is still warm."
Yuancheng was too cold. After taking off his gloves, Shen Heng had no feeling in his hands and couldn't feel Bai Shihai's pulse, but he could feel some temperature.
Bai Shihai's tears froze on his eyelashes as soon as they came out.
"Then what are we waiting for? Let's carry it back right away!"
Fortunately, Bai Shibao found a cave to hide in. He wasn't crushed and there was plenty of space. Judging from his purple face, it was probably not from the cold, but from lack of oxygen.
They came prepared, carrying a stretcher. The group carried Bai Shibao down the mountain and said he was still breathing. The military doctor rushed over to help.
