"Really?"
Zhang Mai tucked her hair behind her ear, looking somewhat hesitant: "I wonder when they'll come again? Bai Jiaojiao, could you ask them to come to the school again?"
As Zhang Mai spoke, he winked at Bai Jiaojiao, thinking he was being playful. Bai Jiaojiao felt uncomfortable because she found it hard to accept such an intimate gesture from someone she didn't know well.
"I can't."
Zhang Mai's lips twitched slightly just as the school bell rang, and Bai Jiaojiao seemed to hear some kind of grand pardon.
Zhang Mai was unable to return to her seat. Bai Jiaojiao touched her forehead, which was covered in a thin layer of sweat from embarrassment.
Xu Yue handed her a small note: "You have such a good temper."
Bai Jiaojiao gave her a wry smile.
After class, before Zhang Mai could even speak, Xu Yue grabbed Bai Jiaojiao and said to herself, "Hurry up, I need to get the scallion pancakes at the cafeteria's number three window today, they'll be sold out if we're late! Let's go!"
The three of them ran wildly, clutching their unfastened backpacks, leaving Zhang Mai far behind before they finally stopped.
Xu Yue, panting heavily, said, "Jiaojiao, why are you still paying attention to someone like that? It's hilarious! Who does she think she is? Why did you have to specifically ask her out? Didn't you see that your two younger brothers are in the military? Do you think the military will let them come out whenever they want?"
The logic couldn't be simpler, but Zhang Mai just wouldn't think in that direction. She only knew that she wanted to contact people, so she made this unreasonable request.
"If she brings this up again next time, I'll just tell her straight up."
Bai Jiaojiao was also helpless. To be honest, Yang Fenglin and Qi Yunxin were not necessarily good candidates.
Being with Yang Fenglin is incredibly annoying, and being with Qi Yunxin is incredibly boring.
The three of them went to the cafeteria together and actually managed to buy the scallion pancakes, which were in limited supply each day.
These pancakes take a long time to make, so the kitchen takes the easiest approach. They only make fifty a day and sell them at noon. Once they're sold out, they're gone.
When she wasn't raising DouDou or when Chen Heng was at home, on days when she had classes in the third and fourth periods and the fifth and sixth periods, Bai Jiaojiao would go back to her dormitory to take a nap.
But now that she needs to go back to feed the dogs, Bai Jiaojiao has no choice but to ride her bike back.
To take care of Shu Manling's feelings, Bai Jiaojiao never bought food from the cafeteria to feed the dog, even though it was her own money. She just couldn't bring herself to embarrass her good friend who had trouble eating.
When Bai Jiaojiao returned home, she still had to make special dog food for Bai Doudou.
White beans eat grains, how could they not be strong and healthy?
Bai Jiaojiao was happily heading home, looking forward to Bai Doudou's greeting, but before she even turned into the alley, she heard Bai Doudou barking incessantly.
Bai Jiaojiao pedaled her bicycle faster and, sure enough, saw Mr. and Mrs. Ding.
They just arrived last night, and they're here again today.
At this moment, Mr. and Mrs. Ding also turned around and saw Bai Jiaojiao. Mrs. Ding said immediately, "Jiaojiao, your dog is so scary!"
Bai Jiaojiao pouted. "You come to my doorstep and make a scene. I'd rather you scare my DouDou."
When Ding's mother saw Bai Jiaojiao, she immediately began to accuse it of its misdeeds: "Your dog has climbed onto the roof of the flat-roofed house! Just now it was barking at us with its head down, and its saliva even dripped onto my face!"
Above their doorway was a flat, tileless house used for drying things or for cooling off in the summer. Once Bai Doudou grew taller than the steps, she would hop up there on her own.
It heard a noise outside and would definitely go up to a higher place to see.
