"Right away, right away." The hostel manager acted immediately, and in her haste, she accidentally tore off a page from the registration form. "This is the person. Her name isn't Xiaoman, it's Wan Dongping."
It's not unusual for people to use code names when they're out in the world. Luckily, this woman knew who they were looking for, otherwise the two names wouldn't have matched up.
Officer Chen took the document and looked at Wan Dongping's check-in information: "Why is there nothing on this? Just a name and place of origin?"
"Officer, this is just for registration. We can't just copy down people's letters of introduction and household registration books, can we? They won't allow that."
"Then why don't you even register your workplace? If you don't register, how are you going to find people now that something has happened? What's the point of just registering these things?"
"Comrade, you know we're busy here. If someone brings a letter of introduction, we always register these things. With a big factory backing her up, who would have thought she'd get into legal trouble?"
As the woman explained, she glanced at Bai Jiaojiao and Shen Heng.
Officer Chen couldn't help but shift his gaze to the two of them.
Yang Fenglin took the register from Officer Chen: "So you can't find it?"
Officer Chen asked the woman, "Is her letter of introduction genuine? How much of the information on it do you remember?"
How could that woman have known something like this would happen? She didn't even look closely: "It's definitely real, it's real. Her letter of introduction seems to belong to some factory, it should be... a textile factory! Something like Lanfang!"
The woman realized the key information and couldn't help but smile easily.
"Okay, thank you for your cooperation."
Now, private factories are being set up one after another here, but they are all registered. Officer Chen breathed a sigh of relief and said to Yang Fenglin, "Don't worry, we'll go back and check if there's a textile factory called Lanfang. We'll let you know as soon as we have any news."
Shen Heng said, "We're about to return to Yancheng. We've recovered the money we were swindled out of. You don't need to report to us when you're handling the case."
"No, brother-in-law, I have to wait until they find Xiaoman. I have to give myself an explanation."
Yang Fenglin didn't want to go back like this.
Shen Heng had a headache and really wanted Yang Changping to come over and give this young master a re-education.
He looked at Bai Jiaojiao.
Bai Jiaojiao tugged at Yang Fenglin's arm: "Fenglin, your brother-in-law has business to attend to back in Yancheng, he can't stay here forever."
"It's okay, sis. You and brother-in-law go first. I'll stay here and wait for the truth!"
Bai Jiaojiao was also starting to have a headache. This was all a scam. Brother Cheng had already been arrested. What need was there for the truth? Xiaoman was just a small fry. Whether she was caught or not didn't matter.
But if she really leaves Yang Fenglin here all alone, he'll probably be swindled out of everything.
Shen Heng sighed deeply and looked at Officer Chen: "You guys should hurry up. Investigating a textile factory shouldn't take too long, right?"
"Don't worry, I'll give you an answer tomorrow morning!"
Bai Jiaojiao could only stay here with Shen Heng, risking her life to keep him company.
Yang Fenglin had never been fooled like this before. In Yancheng, let alone being deceived, no one even dared to speak loudly to him. He was just unwilling to accept it and wanted to see the police officers arrest Xiaoman with his own eyes and get justice for himself.
Officer Chen left with his men. It was getting late, so Bai Jiaojiao told Yang Fenglin to go back and rest: "Go back to sleep now. Don't wander off or go with anyone. Let us know where you're going first."
"I understand, sister. I've learned my lesson once, and I won't make the same mistake again."
Yang Fenglin wasn't stupid; the principle of learning from one's mistakes still applied to him.
Bai Jiaojiao and Shen Heng also went back to their room. They took a quick shower, and Bai Jiaojiao only felt hungry again after lying in bed.
"See, I knew you'd be hungry tonight." Shen Heng took out the meat bun he had packed. It was hot here, but the bun was still at room temperature and hadn't gotten cold at all.
Bai Jiaojiao took the bun and took a bite: "Heng-ge, you're so kind. But I don't think Fenglin ate much tonight. Let's go and bring him some snacks later."
“I think he should go hungry for two meals. He’s too full to go to the market with a strange girl. If he were my son, I would kick him twice.”
Today, Bai Jiaojiao went to gamble with that Brother Cheng, which made Shen Heng very nervous.
He wished he could hide Bai Jiaojiao away completely; this cousin was wonderful, and he needed his sister to stand up for him.
Bai Jiaojiao said, "Feng Lin has had too smooth a life. It's good for him to stumble a bit more."
"How did you figure out what trick this person was up to today? Even I didn't see through it," Shen Heng couldn't help but ask.
Bai Jiaojiao raised her eyebrows and smiled, "Because I'm smart."
Bai Jiaojiao's head-tilting manner, seeking praise, was surprisingly similar to Bai Doudou's. Shen Heng reached out and ruffled Bai Jiaojiao's hair: "Yes, yes, you're the smartest."
"But I only dare to do this when you're here. If I were to publicly wreck someone's place, I might end up getting wrecked myself if I'm not careful."
With Shen Heng by her side, Bai Jiaojiao felt confident in everything she did.
Hearing Bai Jiaojiao praise herself, Shen Heng was pleased and said, "Since you've said so, I can only reluctantly stay here with you two sisters."
After Bai Jiaojiao finished eating a steamed bun, she felt sleepy because she had something in her stomach.
Shen Heng finished packing his things and asked, "Shall we go shopping again tomorrow?"
“Go ahead, what else are you going to do?” Bai Jiaojiao said.
“It’s good that we’re staying here. Next time we run into Officer Chen, we can ask him about Yu Wenli. Hey, your uncle should have already informed us. Officer Chen’s attitude towards us now is completely different from when he interrogated me.”
Shen Heng found it amusing to think about the change in Officer Chen's attitude today.
Bai Jiaojiao said, "Uncle must have been trying to find out about the situation here. It's not surprising that he knows our identities. Otherwise, which police station would let Feng Lin act recklessly and report cases to him?"
"That's perfect. When we ask Yu Wenli about it, he won't refuse to tell us."
"Why are you always thinking about Yu Wenli? He was murdered. It still gives me the creeps when I think about it."
Bai Jiaojiao didn't want to mention Yu Wenli in the first place; it was practically her dark history.
Now that Yu Wenli is dead, and it's late at night, she doesn't really want to pay much attention to him.
Shen Heng hugged Bai Jiaojiao and changed the subject: "What are you afraid of? I'm here. Oh, by the way, Li Xiulian from our village is here too. She must have come with Yu Wenli. I wonder if she'll go back to the village now that Yu Wenli is dead."
