Chapter 424 Testing Cadres

Liu Dazhuang's mother had plenty of excuses, and Liu Dazhuang felt ashamed for her over there.

"I'm not talking to you anymore, Dazhuang. You go ahead with your work, don't worry about me here."

Liu Dazhuang thought to himself, "How can I not worry? Mother, you and Father should cooperate well with the treatment and not cause any more trouble for others."

"I know, I know. Okay, hang up now. I need to talk to the doctor about your dad's surgery."

After hanging up the phone, Aunt Liu smiled ingratiatingly at Ji Guizhang: "Chief Ji, would you please go to the ward and visit my old man?"

Ji Guizhang's brows furrowed deeply: "I don't think that's necessary. I will discuss Liu Niangen's condition with his previous attending physician. He has already undergone all the necessary tests. I'm not a god; I can't see anything just by looking!"

The old woman was embarrassed, never expecting that she had made things worse for herself.

"Commander, come here, come here."

She grabbed Ji Guizhang, and surprisingly, the seemingly frail Aunt Liu had quite a bit of strength in her hands.

Ji Guizhang almost stumbled from her pull: "What are you doing?"

He remembered Bai Jiaojiao saying that last night, Aunt Liu tried to bribe him but knocked on the wrong door. He wondered where she had heard about it.

He angrily retorted, "Let me tell you, there's no point in you doing this. If you don't cooperate, I'm going straight back!"

"Auntie, Auntie, what are you doing?" The doctor on duty pulled Aunt Liu aside. "Since Dr. Ji has come all this way, he'll definitely do his best. If you do anything extra, aren't you questioning his character?"

"Don't I know? I've asked around in the countryside. You doctors, if you don't give gifts, how can you expect me to do my best to perform surgeries? Do you think I want to give gifts?"

Aunt Liu's words made the doctor on duty blush.

"Who told you that! We don't accept gifts! Go back to your ward right now and tell the old man not to eat or drink anything from now on. We'll arrange your surgery as soon as possible!"

The doctor on duty practically pushed and shooed Liu out of the office.

"I'm so sorry," the on-duty doctor said with an apologetic smile to Ji Guizhang.

Ji Guizhang was so angry he was practically spitting fire: "I shouldn't have come!"

With that, he snorted and left the duty room.

The doctor on duty followed behind, glanced at Bai Jiaojiao, and still thought she was good at talking, so he pulled her aside: "Young lady, go back and persuade your teacher to calm down. Our hospital didn't expect things to escalate like this. I'll go and coordinate the surgery time right away. I'll let you know as soon as it's set. Please don't let your teacher, Ms. Ji, go back to Yancheng."

Bai Jiaojiao said, "Our Teacher Ji isn't that kind of person. Although he's angry, he won't go back since he promised. You should also try to persuade Aunt Liu, no, you should criticize her, and tell her not to use that burden of hers to test our comrades anymore."

"Sigh, I don't know where she heard that from. We've never had this kind of thing in our hospital before."

Regardless of whether the doctor on duty was telling the truth or not, Bai Jiaojiao nodded and followed Teacher Ji.

Shen Heng waited at the guesthouse for Bai Jiaojiao to return, but he didn't expect her to return so early.

"Is the surgery over?"

"He didn't do it, which really angered Teacher Ji. I saw steam rising from his head."

Bai Jiaojiao recounted what Grandpa Liu and Grandma Liu had done to Shen Heng. Shen Heng laughed as he listened, "This old lady, doesn't she even realize who Ji Guizhang is? She and her husband could save up for a lifetime and still not earn as much as he does in a month. And she's still thinking about bribing him."

"If this surgery is postponed, I don't know if I'll be able to catch the return trip. If I don't, it will take another day."

This is what angered Ji Guizhang. He took three days to do this, and yet people questioned his character. It's like offering his face to be slapped.

"So you definitely can't do it this morning, right?"

"With the time spent fasting and abstaining from water added, the hospital's operating tables may not be available. The earliest available time is the afternoon, and it might even be tomorrow."

Ji Guizhang returned to his dormitory, still angry, while making arrangements for his affairs in Yancheng and calling his secretary.

The surgery was scheduled for the afternoon, and Bai Jiaojiao and her fellow students followed Ji Guizhang into the operating room to observe.

Bai Jiaojiao glanced at Ji Guizhang and found that Ji Guizhang's emotions were quite stable.

Just before they entered the operating room, Aunt Liu rushed up to Ji Guizhang again, begging him to be magnanimous and not to sabotage the surgery because he had offended her.

Ji Guizhang was so angry he was practically fuming. Bai Jiaojiao had never seen Ji Guizhang with such an expression before; it looked like his chest was about to explode. Her senior brother quickly pulled Aunt Liu away.

However, Ji Guizhang has now calmed down and is making serious and earnest preparations for the operation.

Bai Jiaojiao thought to herself that being a doctor requires more than just professional knowledge; she also needs to learn a lot about mental fortitude from Teacher Ji.

They watched from the sidelines, not allowed to approach, not allowed to make a sound, and preferably not to move at all, as if they didn't exist.

Their legs were numb, but no one complained of being tired; this kind of opportunity is not something everyone gets.

The surgery performed by Ji Guizhang only lasted about ten minutes and was over quickly.

"Have you all taken a good look? Go back and write a report for me."

Ji Guizhang led them out of the operating room and assigned them tasks.

"Teacher, shall we go back right away? It seems there are no trains tonight."

"Go buy the earliest train ticket later... and take your junior sister's husband's." Ji Guizhang went to the changing room, found his clothes, and took out money to pay his senior brother who had come with him.

"Teacher, Heng-ge is free today, so he told me he should have already bought the train tickets. You can save yourself the trouble."

Ji Guizhang couldn't help but feel a bit of goodwill towards Shen Heng: "That's perfect, I was worried that it would be hard to buy a standing ticket. Here, take the money."

“I’ll only take the tickets for the four of us; he can pay for his own ticket.”

A senior student joked, "Jiaojiao is with a self-funded secretary."

"Senior brother, please stop making fun of me."

"There's nothing to do this afternoon, so you can rest if you want. You won't be able to rest on the train anyway. Pack your things so you don't miss your train journey. Jiaojiao, could you please come and bring me my tickets later?"

"Okay, teacher."

Ji Guizhang didn't leave after the surgery; he waited in the office until Grandpa Liu woke up from the anesthesia to check on him and see if there were any adverse reactions.

The students didn't rest either. Since they were learning, they naturally started with the patient's diagnosis and continued until the postoperative reaction, so that they could learn the entire case completely.

A short while later, Shen Heng found the inpatient department and came over with three train tickets.

"I bought a ticket for 7 a.m. tomorrow, which is the earliest train, but the seats are all messed up, and there's also a standing ticket."
