Chapter 451 Extra Chapter 2: The Chilling Winter

Bai Shiqing rode her bicycle to work. The wind in Yancheng was strong, and the wind stung the half of her face that wasn't wearing a mask, while the half that was wearing a mask was wet and stuffy.

The snow on the streets had been mostly cleared, but a section of dirt road remained very muddy, making it very difficult for Bai Shiqing to walk.

"Wow—wow—"

Amidst the howling wind, two faint cries of a baby were heard. At first, Bai Shiqing thought she was hallucinating.

"Wow—wow—"

Bai Shiqing heard it more and more clearly, so she quickly stopped the car and listened carefully.

"My God."

Bai Shiqing looked around and saw a swaddled baby next to the garbage heap; the voice was coming from inside.

She parked the car and went over, and sure enough, she saw a baby less than a month old. Bai Shiqing didn't even need to lift the blanket to see; she knew it must be a girl.

Her own mother was heartless, but Bai Shiqing couldn't ignore it.

"It's a tragedy that there are such heartless mothers in the world."

As Bai Shiqing said this, she picked up the swaddled baby from the ground. After arriving at her workplace, Bai Shiqing only dared to lift the swaddled baby when she was near the stove.

"Where did you get such a little baby?"

"How did you get so cold? You didn't even think to put a thicker blanket around you. Luckily, the sun is out today."

Everyone gathered around, and seeing the baby barely alive, they all frowned.

"I just picked this up on the road. I don't know who threw it away. It must be a girl. The family doesn't want to keep her anymore."

Bai Shiqing, holding the child, asked, "Does anyone have any food to feed this child?"

"I have some malted milk powder here, let me make some for you."

Bai Shiqing's colleagues rushed to find malted milk powder; the child didn't even have the strength to cry, he was so pitiful.

"I really don't know which bastard could do such a thing!"

They had heard of it before, but this was the first time they had actually seen an abandoned baby girl.

"The child was left near the garbage dump not far from our workplace. There aren't many people here. If I hadn't taken the day off, the child would have been hard by the time we got off work."

Bai Shiqing pointed to the pile of trash outside where the child had just been found and complained to everyone.

"That means they didn't intend for the child to live. In this cold weather, the child would definitely cry, and if left in a crowded place, someone would definitely find out."

"Why!"

They felt terrible, but they couldn't say anything.

Which family doesn't want a son to carry on the family line? Nowadays, families are only allowed one child, and most people who have daughters are unwilling to have one. Not everyone is an honest person who accepts their fate.

Bai Shiqing has connections, so no one said anything when she brought her child to work to take care of him.

But this child couldn't be kept at the workplace forever, and Bai Shiqing was now having a headache about where to put her.

“This child needs to be sent to an orphanage, but the orphanages are overwhelmed these days. Almost every day, children are dropped off at their door, and they might not even be willing to take them in.”

Bai Shiqing was feeding the baby malted milk powder when a colleague offered a suggestion.

"I'll take it over and ask."

"Don't send her to an orphanage, Bai Shiqing. I think it's fate that you picked her up. Why don't you take her home and raise her yourself?"

Bai Shiqing looked in the direction of the voice and said, "Cao Feng, you know I have a pair of twins at home. I have sons and daughters. Even if I wanted to adopt this child, I couldn't register him!"

"Why don't you ask your uncle to help you out? Anyway, you're doing a good deed, and it doesn't count as having an extra child."

Cao Feng's words made Bai Shiqing frown: "Do you think this is like raising a cat or dog, something you can just bring home whenever you want?"

She wasn't usually familiar with this person, so why did she say such awful things today?

"Don't take it out on me. Aren't you usually a very kind person? Besides, you're the one who picked up this child. If you're not going to raise her, are you going to just leave her outside?"

Cao Feng's words angered Bai Shiqing, but she couldn't refute them.

She's really taken on a hot potato.

But now she has a son and a daughter, one active and one quiet, and has everything she needs, so there is no need for her to have another child.

Moreover, raising a child requires so much effort and money. The better their conditions are now, the more Bai Shiqing feels that raising children is expensive. They have to be very careful with money to raise two children. The money for their children's schooling, Li Yang's dowry, and Li Yun's dowry are not enough for her and Li Shuxian to save up.

Bai Shiqing sighed, but still took the child home that night.

"You...you...you..."

When Li Shuxian saw Bai Shiqing carrying a child back, he was speechless for a moment.

"I've picked up a hot potato, what do you suggest we do?"

Bai Shiqing didn't even have time to rest after saying that; she quickly went to make the milk powder.

"Don't just stand there. Do you think you can still find their old pacifiers? Go check the cupboards; I've forgotten where I put them."

"Oh, oh..." Li Shuxian was still confused.

"Mom, you brought a baby home? Did you give us another little brother or sister?"

Li Yang only knew that his mother could give birth to younger brothers and sisters for him, but he didn't know exactly how she gave birth. When he saw his mother bring a child home, he wasn't surprised at all, but rather very happy.

Li Yun stared at the baby in Bai Shiqing's arms, her face also filled with anticipation.

The two children accepted it well. Bai Shiqing sighed, "This child wasn't born to her mother. She was abandoned by her family and picked up by her mother from the street."

"Didn't you find Xiaoyun and me too? But we were under a bridge, and we were covered with this same little floral quilt, weren't we?"
