Shen Heng licked his lower lip: "Didn't you remind your older brother? I think he knows what he's doing."
"......"
Sure enough, every man has a wild beast inside him, but Bai Shihai kept it hidden.
Shen Heng carefully observed Bai Jiaojiao's expression: "Could I really let him kill someone? At that time, all I could think about was letting your older brother vent his anger, otherwise your sister would have been pinched for nothing."
Shen Heng's words struck a chord with Bai Jiaojiao.
"Giving him two shovelfuls is too lenient of him."
Upon hearing this, Shen Heng immediately nodded, "That's right." He breathed a sigh of relief.
Wiping his sweat, he wondered if he had managed to appease his wife.
With the matter settled, Bai Jiaojiao stopped pursuing the details.
Although the process was somewhat unsatisfactory, it was able to free Bai Shiqing from the constraints of her past life, but the result was good.
"My second sister said that Brother Shuxian went to help?"
“It was him. He was still there when we went over.”
Bai Jiaojiao smiled, pursing her lips.
It seems these two are quite destined for each other.
Li Shuxian was Bai Shiqing's second husband. In his previous life, he married a girl from a neighboring village through an arranged marriage by his parents. However, the girl had a disease, which her family kept hidden, waiting to find a son-in-law so they could get rid of her and make some money from the dowry.
Who knew that the girl would pass away the year after she married him? Li Shuxian followed the rules and waited three years before remarrying. Coincidentally, Bai Shiqing and Zhu Shengping were also going through a divorce at that time.
Both of them were remarried, so the matchmaking process naturally brought them together. At the time, Bai Shiqing was a little afraid of men, and Bai Jiaojiao didn't know what tricks Li Shuxian used to persuade Bai Shiqing.
Bai Shiqing was impatient, while Li Shuxian was the eldest brother in the family, steady and modest, which complemented Bai Shiqing perfectly. Later, the two lived a very happy life together.
Bai Jiaojiao thought that if she directly tried to matchmake Li Shuxian and Bai Shiqing, although it might ruin the fate of Li Shuxian and his ex-wife, it would be a way to protect Li Shuxian from disaster.
Seeing that Bai Jiaojiao had been staring blankly and not speaking the whole way, Shen Heng assumed that Bai Shiqing's ordeal had frightened her.
Or perhaps, Bai Jiaojiao saw Bai Shiqing's state and was afraid that she would harm her in the future.
The latter speculation is truly terrifying.
"Bai Jiaojiao, although I have a criminal record, I would never lay a hand on my woman. Don't overthink it, and don't misunderstand me."
Shen Heng suddenly made a serious promise, and Bai Jiaojiao turned to look at him, finding it amusing.
Suppressing a laugh, I quickened my pace and walked home.
Why are you running?!
Shen Heng followed behind, quickly took a few steps and circled around to Bai Jiaojiao's front, only to find his little wife laughing at him: "You little rascal, Bai Jiaojiao, how dare you laugh at me!"
"I didn't laugh at you, you're just being silly."
Bai Jiaojiao ran home, but Shen Heng wouldn't let her go, pinching her waist with his big hand and tickling her.
"Brother Heng, Brother Heng, I was wrong!"
Bai Jiaojiao laughed uncontrollably, pleading for forgiveness in a sweet voice, but Shen Heng swept her up in his arms and said, "What do you have to offer as an apology?"
"Heng-ge, stop messing around, we'll be at work in half an hour!"
Bai Jiaojiao pushed Shen Heng, but was still pinned down on the kang (a heated brick bed).
She had no chance to resist Shen Heng.
Shen Heng ground his fangs and grinned mischievously: "What are you thinking? How are you going to apologize to Brother Heng in half an hour?"
Shen Heng vehemently denied having any intention of acting like a hooligan, making it sound as if Bai Jiaojiao herself was not pure of heart and had misunderstood.
Bai Jiaojiao blushed and said, "Brother Heng, you're bullying me again."
Shen Heng chuckled sarcastically, "How could I dare to bully you? Your older brother is so fierce, who knows if he'll put an iron shovel to my neck tonight."
"Stop insulting my older brother."
Bai Jiaojiao pulled away from Shen Heng's embrace and got off the kang (heated brick bed): "Hurry up and eat, the food has gone bad."
Shen Heng realized that he was just being a jerk; he wouldn't feel happy unless he had a little squabble with Bai Jiaojiao.
Seeing Bai Jiaojiao blushing from his teasing, Shen Heng was satisfied. He went downstairs and obediently ate his meal, and even washed the dishes.
"Brother Heng, I want to go to the supply and marketing cooperative in town tomorrow. It's almost Dragon Boat Festival, and I need to buy some bamboo leaves for making zongzi (sticky rice dumplings)."
"Perfect timing, I'll go get tickets for your older brother."
Shen Heng tidied himself up and was about to go to work.
Bai Jiaojiao went there in the afternoon to check in, but Shen Heng had already finished the work in the fields.
The next day, before dawn, several large trucks drove into Shili Village in a grand procession.
After several days of drying, the wheat in the field has been dried, and the county sent a truck to pick it up.
Shen Heng used both threats and inducements on Zheng Xu, offering to help transport grain, and Zheng Xu actually agreed.
Bai Jiaojiao was very excited when she heard that she could go to the county.
She was in high spirits and even filled a glass bottle with water to drink on the way.
With various coupons tucked in her pocket, Bai Jiaojiao figured the county's supply and marketing cooperative would have even more sought-after items. She decided to go and browse around, taking twenty yuan, which was just enough to get by.
Bai Jiaojiao, carrying a military green crossbody bag, jogged to the back of the truck and waited there early in the truck bed for departure.
Zheng Xu instructed Shen Heng: "When they're weighing the items over there, have your wife keep track of the numbers. Don't let them cheat you; those people get kickbacks."
Working at the county grain depot was a lucrative job; even a slight oversight in weighing could earn a considerable sum.
Zheng Xu was able to let the two of them go for two reasons. First, Shen Heng was a shrew, and most people wouldn't dare to cheat him. Second, he saw that Bai Jiaojiao had made great contributions to the autumn harvest, but the village hadn't praised her. So, Zheng Xu was going along with it and doing Bai Jiaojiao a favor.
"Understood," Shen Heng replied.
"After you've finished delivering the grain, you can go for a stroll if you want, but come back early. Don't cause any trouble outside. The village chief is crazy about getting this advanced award this year. If you cause any trouble, don't think you're from Shili Village anymore, and don't even think about coming back."
Zheng Xu then pressed on.
"I know, I know," Shen Heng readily agreed.
The truck started its engine, and Shen Heng followed Bai Jiaojiao over.
The people sitting in the front of the truck were all from the town. In this world, food is the most important thing, and having more people escorting the truck is also for safety.
The front of the truck was full, so Shen Heng and Bai Jiaojiao had to move to the back. Shen Heng jumped into the back first, then pulled Bai Jiaojiao up with him, and they sat down with Mai Zi.
They had barely settled in when the car started moving.
Although the back of the truck was quite noisy, the aroma of wheat along the way and the wind blowing against my face made it quite pleasant.
"Take a nap. It will take at least four or five hours to get to the county."
Shen Heng casually grabbed Bai Jiaojiao's hand and coaxed her to sleep, worried that she might suffer on the journey.
Bai Jiaojiao, however, was very excited as she watched the scenery rushing past her.
"Brother Heng, how are we going to get back later?"
"You're already on the bus, isn't it too late to ask this now? If I sold you, you'd still have to count the money for me." Shen Heng laughed at Bai Jiaojiao's belated realization.
Bai Jiaojiao retorted, "If you sell me, you'll be a bachelor forever. What good will that do you?"
