Chapter 13: Breaking off the Engagement

In Han Xiao's opinion, it was not so bad. The three of them were young and strong men, and it was the time for them to eat. Besides, the work they would be doing later would be physical labor. How could they work without eating enough?

With Dashan and Dahe around, Han Xiao could feel much more relaxed. He let the two of them take turns pushing the millstone. Han Xiao also did not hide the tofu-making matter and showed it to the two brothers openly.

The two people watching were very nervous and said cautiously: "Han Xiao, you are just letting us watch like this, aren't you afraid that we will learn it?"

Han Xiao stopped what he was doing and said, "It's your ability if you learn it. You can learn by working for me. Once you've learned it well, you can start your own business, which would be great."

The two brothers were very excited after hearing this. You know, there is a saying here that a teacher will starve his master to death if he teaches his apprentice. They really didn't expect Han Xiao to be so generous.

Since this was the case, the two of them looked at each other and decided to follow Han Xiao and work hard, not to let down his kindness. As a result, the two of them worked even harder.

Originally, Han Xiao could only make 5 or 6 boards of tofu a day, but the two brothers made more than ten boards that day. They were very happy when the manager of Yipinlou came to pick up the goods.

Han Xiao had been making it alone before, and the quantity was limited. The tofu dishes at Yipinlou were very popular, so they had always wanted Han Xiao to make more, but they didn't expect that he would give them so much today.

Han Xiao was also satisfied with the work of the two. There were not many people who worked so hard without cheating.

Life was back on track. Seeing that the two brothers were doing a good job, Han Xiao simply handed over most of the morning shop opening work to them, hoping to let his mother have a rest and enjoy herself. However, his mother was a hardworking person and could not sit idle all day long, so he could only let her do the job of collecting money.

Dashan and Dahe can basically handle the rest of the work, so Han Xiao has some free time.

There were only a dozen days left until the New Year, and Han Xiao was about to become an adult. He decided to go to the Ruan family before the New Year to bring up the matter of breaking off the engagement.

It just so happened that Han Mingyuan was also on vacation, so the father and son decided to find a time to visit him.

However, before going to the Ruan family, Han Xiao still had something to discuss with Han Mingyuan.

The breakfast shop is now stable, and the tofu sold to Yipintang is also a considerable income. Han Mingyuan no longer has to work so hard to teach.

Moreover, Han Xiao thought that Han Mingyuan was still young, only in his 30s, and should be able to continue taking the exam. Han Mingyuan must be somewhat unwilling to accept that he did not pass the exam.

Han Xiao had discussed this matter with his mother before. His mother had no objection, but she was worried that Han Mingyuan would have to rely on her son to support his studies, and she would feel uncomfortable.

Han Xiao felt that Han Mingyuan was very clear-minded, and as long as he explained it to him clearly, there shouldn't be any problem.

Moreover, Han Mingyuan's continued study will be a great help to Han Xiao. In this era, money is nothing, the most important thing is power. Han Xiao himself does not have the mind to take the imperial examination. Han Mingyuan has the talent and the ability, so he is simply the perfect match.

After dinner, Han Xiao told Han Mingyuan about continuing the scientific expedition.

Sure enough, Han Mingyuan's face changed, and he lost his previous calm expression: "Why are you talking about this?"

Han Xiao looked at Han Mingyuan with a firm gaze: "Father is in his prime. If he continues to take the exam, he should have a great chance."

Han Mingyuan shook his head: "Forget it. I don't have the drive of youth when I'm old. Now that nothing is happening at home, I can take care of our family and live a good life. As for the imperial examination, let's not talk about it anymore."

Seeing Han Mingyuan's low mood, Han Xiao continued to ask, "Are you willing to accept this? Second Uncle has already passed the imperial examination this year. The next step is the provincial and palace examinations. If this continues, the gap between our two families will only grow. Do you think you can still protect us in the future?"

Han Mingyuan was deeply shocked by Han Xiao's words. He knew it very well, but he had failed the exam three times in a row and was speechless in front of his wife and children.

Seeing Han Mingyuan remained silent, Han Xiao continued, "Now that our family no longer needs you to teach, we have the money for you to continue your studies. Moreover, if you pass the imperial examination in the future, it will only benefit your son, not harm him. Think about it, Dad."

This was the first time that Han Xiao called Han Mingyuan "Dad". In the past, he always called him "Father", which was more respectful than close. This time, Han Xiao really put Han Mingyuan in the position of his closest relative.

Seeing Han Mingyuan was caught up in his emotions, Han Xiao did not persuade him any more. Han Mingyuan was a smart man, and he believed that Han Mingyuan knew how to choose.

Mother Han looked at Han Xiao and asked worriedly, "Da Lang, how is your father?"

"It's okay, Mom. Dad will figure it out." Han Xiao comforted her.

Although Han's mother was still worried after hearing what Han Xiao said, she didn't dare to go in and disturb Han Mingyuan. She could only continue to coax Han Yuer and Han Que to sleep.

Early the next morning, Han Xiao changed into clean and decent clothes and prepared to go to Ruan's house.

When I opened the door, I saw Han Mingyuan had already gotten up and was helping in the shack. Although the dark circles under his eyes could not be concealed, he looked in good spirits.

Seeing Han Xiao coming out, he smiled and asked Han Xiao to go have breakfast.

Han Xiao understood. It seemed that Han Mingyuan had figured it out. Taking advantage of the break in breakfast, Han Xiao asked, "Father has made up his mind?"

Han Mingyuan smiled brightly: "Yes, I was obsessed with it yesterday. Now that my son has a promising future, I can continue to take the exam without any worries."

Han Xiao was happy for Han Mingyuan when he saw this. Although he knew that Han Mingyuan would agree, nothing can be absolute. If Han Mingyuan really didn't want to continue the scientific expedition, Han Xiao would not persuade him anymore. After all, everyone has their own choice.
