Chapter 4 The Fate of Ants
Shi Mingguang took off his suit jacket, rolled up his shirt sleeves, and braved the scorching sun to persuade the workers who were leading the riot.
"You said you believed me, so why are you doing this? If you do this, they'll find a way to bite you back."
The workers splashed paint of various colors on the door of Luo's Group, and some people wrote big words on it with mops, demanding that Luo's Group "pay with blood with blood" and "pay with life for murder."
"Lawyer Shi! This is bad! Luo's people called the police, saying they're disrupting public order and damaging the group's property. Their consulting lawyer is also going to sue the workers."
Shi Mingguang tried his best to persuade the workers to go back, and hurriedly contacted He Le, an acquaintance in the Luo Law Firm, to persuade them to withdraw the lawsuit against the workers, but the other party insisted on pursuing the case to the end.
"Lawyer He, you and I are brothers from the same school. Putting aside our respective positions, please look at this matter objectively. If there was nothing wrong with the Luo Group's chemical plant, why did they rush to close it when the workers filed a lawsuit?"
Most of the workers suffered from the same disease. In order to support their families, they worked hard every day. It was not until they found themselves seriously ill that they realized the harm of the chemical elements in the factory to the body.
"Junior brother, since you say we're from the same sect, then I, your senior brother, would like to kindly advise you not to interfere in the Luo family's affairs and to withdraw from this mess as soon as possible. Otherwise, you won't just get yourself into trouble, but you'll drown in this at any moment."
He Le is one of the consulting lawyers of the Luo Group. In terms of seniority, he is not considered a core member. Shi Mingguang also advised him that instead of staying in Luo's legal team and having to look at people's faces, he should become his partner.
He Le and Shi Mingguang had some personal relationship, and his relationship with the Luo family was not inseparable, so he dared to take the risk of giving a few reminders.
"Brother, I understand what you said to mean that there are indeed problems with the Luo Group, and they are quite serious problems, right? I've heard from those workers that if you anger the Luo Group, your life will be in danger at any time. This family did some heinous things when they made their fortune."
Shi Mingguang knew that the Luo Group was not clean when he was still a student, but he was powerless at that time and had no status or power to fight against the Luo Group.
Now he is the founder of Chongguang Law Firm and has accumulated popularity and reputation through cases of all sizes. He knows that many online media and netizens call him the "Messenger of Light."
Shi Mingguang has never been proud of this, but if these recognitions and supports can become the power for him to fight against darkness, he believes that they are the "light".
"Shi Mingguang, you haven't changed at all. You're so stubborn. Okay, let's put an end to our friendship as brothers. From now on, we'll each go our separate ways and keep out of each other's way."
After He Le finished speaking, he hung up the phone without giving Shi Mingguang any chance to make amends.
Giving Shi Mingguang another chance would be equivalent to ruining his own chance.
"So, is that guy willing to listen to advice?" As soon as He Le hung up the phone, he was called to the office by the chief consulting lawyer of Luo Group.
The chief lawyer had long been aware of He Le and Shi Mingguang's private relationship and assigned He Le to be a lobbyist with only two tasks.
The first was to persuade Shi Mingguang to withdraw and stop helping the workers to jointly sue Luo's; the second was to win over Shi Mingguang, who had won a reputation for justice, and help Luo's Group build a positive corporate image.
He Le failed to complete any task and could only smile bitterly and shake his head to complain about Shi Mingguang.
"Hey, that brat, he only gives face to the God of Justice. He's so stubborn, pursuing justice and righteousness every day, he doesn't know how to be reasonable."
"Oh, that's easy. Since he doesn't want to go ashore, he can just wait to drown. Those who don't know how to behave will just fall in."
The chief lawyer made the call without hesitation and said simply, "It's time to get started."
He Le's heart trembled, but he shouldn't have asked. He just stared at the chief uncomfortably. The chief saw through his thoughts at a glance: "Don't worry, we have done everything we should do. If there are some things we can't do, we will leave them to professionals to handle."
"How about I go meet Shi Mingguang and have a good talk with him? After all, we are lawyers, and we can't just take human lives casually—"
He Le carefully observed the chief's expression, and regretted what he said as soon as he finished speaking, and took a breath.
"Hahaha, you said that's a human life? Xiao He, you're still too young. I thought you were the smartest one in the group and was planning to promote you as deputy."
The chief looked disappointed with He Le. He shook his head repeatedly with a cold look in his eyes. The smile on his lips was even more chilling.
"Xiao He, if you take everyone's life too seriously, you'll end up losing yourself sooner or later. Those guys are ants. They are ants to the Luo family, and they should be ants to us too, understand?"
The fate of ants is not in the hands of the ants themselves, nor is it up to righteous people like Shi Mingguang to decide.
Whether ants live or die is decided by those who are far above them.
They are willing to go around, like ants trying to survive, and it is just normal for them to step on them casually.
