“That’s right. But one thing is certain: Han Lin is definitely involved in Han Mo’s case. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be so worried that A Cheng would expose his perjury. Han Lin wouldn’t have risked killing A Cheng.” Wang Shen’s smile suddenly disappeared, and his brows furrowed with seriousness.
"So, if we let Han Lin go, he might bring out the real culprit?"
"At this point, this is just my guess. I hope the outcome will be as I expect. In that case, we might be able to clarify Han Mo's case as well through Acheng's incident." Wang Shen answered Liang Zichen's question while taking out his phone from his pocket.
"There shouldn't be any problems with Han Lin tonight, right?" Liang Zichen frowned slightly.
“Everyone values their life, so there shouldn’t be any major problems. I’ve already notified our people in the bureau to keep a close eye on Han Lin’s movements and have been wiretapping his phone. Speaking of which, we haven’t accessed Han Lin’s file before, so I need to have someone retrieve it first thing tomorrow morning.” Wang Shen’s fingers tapped incessantly on his phone screen.
After a while, Wang Shen finished all his work, and a smile reappeared on his face. "Alright, there's no point in speculating any more now. Fortunately, we've figured out the details of A-Cheng's case." With that, Wang Shen picked up his wine glass, swirled the ice in it, and then clinked glasses with Liang Zichen's.
"Go home and rest early after dinner. You have new work to do tomorrow." Wang Shen smiled and put a piece of food into his mouth.
Wang Shen hadn't slept as well as he had tonight in a long time. It seemed like only a moment after he turned over, dawn had broken. Wang Shen got up and glanced at his phone; he had received a text message: "Captain Wang, I went to retrieve Han Lin's file early this morning. I've already put it on your desk, so you don't have to make another trip to the archives."
After reading the text message, Wang Shen smiled, got up, quickly washed up, and rushed to the police station. As soon as he entered the office, he saw the file on the desk. He opened it and quickly skimmed through Han Lin's file. From the file, Han Lin's past seemed normal. However, his family relationships piqued Wang Shen's interest. The file showed that Han Lin was actually a child from an orphanage. Moreover, Han Lin even had a son. However, Han Lin's marital status was listed as unmarried. Wang Shen recalled the scene he had seen at Han Lin's house that day. He hadn't found any trace of a child. Wang Shen frowned slightly, pondering all the possibilities.
Just as Wang Shen was lost in thought, Liang Zichen rushed in from outside. Before Wang Shen could even look up from the file beside him, he heard Liang Zichen shout, "Captain Wang, something's happened!"
Upon hearing Liang Zichen's words, Wang Shen suddenly snapped out of his reverie, frowned, and looked at Liang Zichen, asking, "Who got into trouble? Acheng, Qi Huan, or Han Lin?"
"Han Lin, I guessed." Liang Zichen was still out of breath, probably because he had been running all the way here.
"What's the meaning?"
"Captain Wang, let's talk as we walk. Let's go check on Han Lin's house first." Hearing Liang Zichen's words, Wang Shen nodded, threw the file on his desk, and then followed Liang Zichen out of the office.
Wang Shen started his car, then looked at Liang Zichen and asked, "Are we going to Han Lin's house?"
“Yes, several of our colleagues have already gone there,” Liang Zichen replied after catching his breath.
"Alright, tell me what exactly happened?" Wang Shen asked, his brows furrowed, as he drove.
“Early this morning, our station received a report that someone had jumped to their death in a certain residential area. I had just arrived at the police station when I received the call, and I happened to glance at the address of that residential area and realized that it was the same one where Han Lin lived, which we visited yesterday. So I wondered if the person who jumped might be Han Lin? Anyway, let's go and take a look first.” Liang Zichen explained his earlier exclamation in one breath.
Wang Shen didn't respond to Liang Zichen's words, but simply pressed the accelerator a little harder. A short while later, Wang Shen's car entered Han Lin's residential complex. Knowing Han Lin's building number, Wang Shen showed his ID to the security guard and drove directly towards the building. Before Wang Shen's car even reached the building, he saw a police car in the distance, surrounded by a group of residents.
A bad feeling crept into Wang Shen's heart; he feared Liang Zichen's guess was correct. Wang Shen parked the car on the side of the road and quickly jumped out. Apologizing profusely, he pushed through the crowd and walked to the edge of the police cordon.
"Captain Wang!" The police officers at the scene saluted when they saw Wang Shen.
Wang Shen nodded, took the plastic gloves from the police officer, and put them on. Then, Wang Shen pushed aside the police tape and walked to the body. He squatted down beside the body and gently touched the deceased's face. Liang Zichen's guess was completely accurate; the deceased was Han Lin!
After confirming the deceased's identity, Wang Shen stood up from the ground. "Who reported the incident? Were they at the scene?" Wang Shen turned to look at the police officer standing beside him.
Upon hearing Wang Shen's question, the police officer beside him straightened up and replied with a serious expression, "Yes, it's that old lady." As he spoke, the officer pointed to the old lady standing outside the police line. Another police officer was standing next to the old lady, and this officer was taking her statement.
Wang Shen glanced in the direction of the old man, then nodded. He took off his gloves, left the police line, and walked to the old man's side.
"Hello, ma'am, I'm the captain of the police team. May I ask you a few questions?" Wang Shen interrupted the police officer's questioning, speaking in a gentle tone and smiling as he asked the elderly woman.
Unexpectedly, when the old man saw Wang Shen, he patted his chest and said righteously, "Of course, cooperating with the police investigation is a citizen's duty."
Wang Shen paused for a moment, then smiled at the old woman again. "Grandma, did you find this person?"
"yes."
"Around when did you discover it?" Wang Shen continued to ask.
"Around six o'clock, I think. If I didn't have the habit of exercising early in the morning and like to wander around the neighborhood, I probably wouldn't have found him so early." The old woman glanced at Han Lin's body out of the corner of her eye, frowned, and then shook her head. "How could someone so young be so foolish?"
After listening to the old man's words, Wang Shen observed the surrounding environment again. Indeed, the apartment building where Han Lin lived was located at the very edge of the community, and there was no road beyond that. The flower bed where Han Lin fell was located behind the entrance of the apartment building and was also far from the main road, so it was indeed rarely visited by anyone.
