"Did you find anything?" Liang Zichen asked Wang Shen after he hung up the phone.
Wang Shen didn't answer, only shook his head. He glanced towards the balcony, then walked over. The balcony window was open, and a pair of slippers lay scattered below. These slippers likely belonged to Han Lin. Wang Shen crouched down to examine the ground. Besides the slippers, he found no other clues. He leaned out the window and looked down. Directly opposite the balcony was the spot where Han Lin had fallen. Han Lin's body had already been removed.
At that moment, Wang Shen suddenly remembered Han Lin's file. That's right! Judging from the kinship records in the file, Han Lin should have another son. Recalling this clue, Han Lin returned to the house and opened all the drawers and cabinets.
Liang Zichen and another police officer followed behind Wang Shen, completely baffled as to what he was doing. After searching for a while, Wang Shen pushed the last drawer back to its original position and then sighed softly.
Seeing that Wang Shen had stopped moving, Liang Zichen walked over to him and asked, "Captain Wang, what are you looking for? Have you found any clues?"
Wang Shen glanced at Liang Zichen, then nodded and replied, "When you came into my office this morning, I was looking at Han Lin's file. According to Han Lin's file, he is an orphan, unmarried, but has a son. However, when I came here last time, I didn't find any trace of the child. So this time I want to double-check and see if I can find any of the child's belongings."
"But there's not a single clue, is there?" After listening to Wang Shen's words, Liang Zichen looked at Wang Shen and asked.
"Hmm," Wang Shen replied simply, then fell into a brief moment of thought. After a while, Wang Shen spoke again, "If we can find traces of a child, that's normal. But in this situation, I feel something is amiss." He paused here.
“It’s strange that a man has no relatives in this world except for his only son. And we can’t find any clues about his son. But is it possible that Han Lin’s son was raised by his mother?” Liang Zichen saw what Wang Shen was wondering and shared his insights along with Wang Shen’s train of thought.
“That’s possible, but since we’re not married, how can we…” Wang Shen suddenly fell silent again. But after a while, he looked up at Liang Zichen. “Perhaps there’s someone who can help us.”
After saying that, Wang Shen took out his phone and dialed Wu Yi's number.
"Officer Wang, what's up?" Wu Yi's voice came from the other end of the phone.
"Dr. Wu, there's something I need your help with." Wang Shen's tone was a little hesitant, but he still asked.
"Is it related to today's case?" Wu Yi asked on the other end of the phone.
"Yes."
"Okay, tell me, and I'll do my best to help in any way I can."
Hearing Wu Yi's words, Wang Shen relaxed slightly. "I'd like you to help me search for a boy's birth record in your hospital's database. If your hospital doesn't have it, I don't know if you have any friends at other hospitals who could help. Because applying to the bureau and then going to each hospital to retrieve the data takes too long. I want to get the results quickly. Besides, Han Lin's family isn't poor. I think he'll most likely choose your hospital for his child's birth." Wang Shen explained in one breath why he wanted Wu Yi's help and why he was asking for it so abruptly.
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone. During that time, Wang Shen's heart skipped a beat. Given his current relationship with Wu Yi, even if Wu Yi refused, it would be a perfectly reasonable outcome. But then, Wang Shen received a positive reply from Wu Yi. "Okay, give me some time. I'll check our hospital's database first. If it's not there, I'll ask friends at other hospitals to help and get back to you as soon as possible."
"Okay, thank you. I'll send you the child's name and date of birth right away." Wu Yi hung up the phone as soon as Wang Shenggang finished speaking.
Wang Shen had just sent a text message and hadn't even put his phone back in his pocket when a police officer standing nearby exclaimed in surprise. This immediately drew the attention of both Wang Shen and Liang Zichen. They ran to the officer and looked at the piece of paper he was holding.
"Captain Wang, look, this is what I found at the bottom of this book." The police officer handed Wang Shen a piece of paper.
Wang Shen took the paper from the police officer, his eyes fixed on a string of numbers written on it. He looked at the numbers several times before handing the paper to Liang Zichen.
Liang Zichen also looked at the string of numbers several times before asking, "Captain Wang, what does this string of numbers mean?"
"I don't know." Wang Shen shook his head, then turned his gaze to the policeman standing to the side. "Did you find this piece of paper under this book just now?" Wang Shen asked, pointing to a book on the bookshelf.
The police officer nodded and said, "Yes, it was trapped under this book."
Wang Shen walked to the front of the bookshelf and glanced at it. The books in the upper left corner caught his attention. The books in the other sections were neatly arranged, but those in the upper left corner were somewhat messy. Wang Shen pulled out the books one by one from the upper left corner. When he pulled out the third to last book, even Liang Zichen exclaimed in surprise, "Captain Wang, look, there's a cell phone in here!"
Wang Shen stopped what he was doing, then reached behind the book and took out the phone. He pressed the power button, but the phone remained on. He swiped his finger across the screen, and the phone entered its user interface.
"Captain Wang, this phone doesn't even have a password." Liang Zichen said in surprise as he watched from the side.
Wang Shen nodded and then opened his phone's contacts. To the surprise of the three of them, there were no contact numbers in the contacts. Wang Shen used this phone to dial his own phone number. The moment the call connected, Wang Shen's phone rang. Wang Shen picked up his phone and saw that it wasn't a number from a major carrier.
"Captain Wang, what's this number?" Liang Zichen asked, staring at the number on Wang Shen's phone.
“There used to be some virtual phone cards, this should be one of them,” Wang Shen replied, then opened the phone’s call history.
The moment they saw the call log, all three of them, including Wang Shen, stared in astonishment at one of the numbers...
