Wang Shen stared at the turned-off phone screen for a while, then sat back down on the sofa and pressed his temples hard with his right thumb and forefinger.
Seeing Wang Shenwei's closed eyes, Liang Zichen hesitated for a moment before sitting down opposite him. "Captain Wang, what's wrong?" Liang Zichen asked tentatively.
Wang Shen continued rubbing his temples, not answering Liang Zichen's question. After a while, Wang Shen stopped what he was doing, looked at Liang Zichen, and asked, "Am I being too arrogant?"
Upon hearing Wang Shen's words, Liang Zichen did not immediately answer his question. Instead, he thought for a moment and said, "Captain Wang, what exactly are you referring to?"
"The evidence we had, including the recording Qi Huan had, was enough to convict Han Lin. Following standard procedure, if I had taken him back to the police station, he might have survived." Ultimately, Wang Shen was still blaming himself for Han Lin's suicide attempt.
“Although I don’t believe in fate, some people have to leave when it’s their time. No matter how hard others try to keep them, they can’t,” Liang Zichen said, biting his lip as he looked at Wang Shen.
After listening to Liang Zichen's words, Wang Shen glanced at Liang Zichen, then closed his eyes, the seriousness between his brows still evident.
"Moreover, we didn't come away empty-handed from Han Lin's case. At least we know that Han Lin was indeed involved in Han Mo's case. This further confirms that Han Mo's case wasn't as simple as suicide. Everything has its advantages and disadvantages, and we should look at the good side." As Liang Zichen spoke, his tone became increasingly consoling.
Upon hearing Liang Zichen's words, Wang Shen opened his eyes, pursed his lips, and said, "But at the cost of Han Lin's life."
"Nothing in life goes as planned, and sacrifices are inevitable in many situations." As Liang Zichen said this, his expression turned cold.
“You’re more mature than me,” Wang Shen replied softly.
At this moment, Liang Zichen suddenly laughed, perhaps trying to break the oppressive atmosphere. "Captain Wang, you're not usually one to overthink things. Tell me, who made that call? I just saw you calling that beautiful writer."
Wang Shen took a deep breath, composed himself, and nodded at Liang Zichen. "The only person I can think of who would have a key to this house is Han Mo's sister, Xu Xiaolin. I just called her, and she gave me a definite alibi. So, my guess seems to be wrong. Now, I really can't think of anyone else who might have a key to this house."
As Liang Zichen listened, he was also pondering the same question. Besides Wang Shen and Xu Xiaolin, who else could possibly have the key to this house?
Wang Shen and Liang Zichen remained silent for a few minutes, then looked up at each other almost simultaneously and uttered the same two words: "The murderer!"
Wang Shen nodded at Liang Zichen. "Yes, the murderer also has a key to this house. Based on our previous analysis of the Han Mo case, I discovered that Han Mo always had a very close relationship with a man. At first, I thought this man was Song Mu, but later I found out it wasn't. Then I suspected it was Han Lin, but we can rule that out now. So, there must be another man hiding somewhere we can't see. And Han Lin must know this man's identity. However, Han Lin has always had something on him that this man has, so he has always been threatened by him. When this man learned that Han Lin was in trouble, he used Han Lin's weakness to force Han Lin to commit suicide. This man is the murderer who killed Han Mo, and also the one who made that threatening phone call." Wang Shen explained his entire analysis in one breath.
“Captain Wang, this analysis is reasonable. But we need to clarify two issues. First, what exactly is this man's leverage over Han Lin? Second, how did this man know that Han Lin's plot to murder A-Cheng had already been exposed?” Liang Zichen frowned, looking at Wang Shen with suspicion as he spoke.
"I'm only speculating about the first question right now, but I've already started an investigation, and I believe we should have results soon. As for the second question, I still can't figure it out. The only people who know about Han Lin's accident are you, me, Qi Huan, and Xu Xiaolin. Could it be..." Wang Shen paused here, then took out his phone and dialed the bureau. While the call was being connected, Wang Shen glanced at the telephone in the corner.
"Hello, this is Wang Shen. Could you please send someone from the technical department to Han Mo's house to collect fingerprints from the telephone? Tell them the address of the landline; they know it. Also, have the technical department contact the telecommunications company to retrieve the call records of a person named Xu Xiaolin, between yesterday noon and 2 AM the next morning. And also, find out the names of all the calls she made. Yes, I need it immediately. Please have them check it right away." With that, Wang Shen hung up the phone.
"Captain Wang, do you still suspect that writer?" Liang Zichen asked after hearing Wang Shen's phone conversation.
Wang Shen nodded, his brow still furrowed as he spoke. "There were only four of us present at the time. For that man to know Han Lin's whereabouts, he would have to have planted a tracking device on Han Lin. Otherwise, there are only two possibilities: either Han Lin leaked it himself, or one of us leaked it. Therefore, I need to investigate Xu Xiaolin's call records."
“No, that makes a logical fallacy.” Liang Zichen said, shaking his head. This seemed to be the first time Liang Zichen had objected to Wang Shen’s words.
"What doesn't make sense?" Wang Shen looked at Liang Zichen with a puzzled expression.
"Captain Wang, are Xu Xiaolin and Han Mo on good terms?" Liang Zichen didn't answer Wang Shen's question directly, but instead asked about the sisterly relationship between Xu Xiaolin and Han Mo.
Wang Shen nodded and answered affirmatively, "It should be very good. The reopening of Han Mo's case this time was partly due to the influence of Xu Xiaolin's serialized novel."
“That’s problematic,” Liang Zichen said, frowning. “According to your reasoning, if Xu Xiaolin is in contact with that man, then she must know he’s the murderer of her sister. In that case, why doesn’t Xu Xiaolin just report him to us? Why go through all this trouble to watch us investigate? And why would Xu Xiaolin reveal Han Lin’s accident to that man? I think only if Xu Xiaolin and that man have an inextricable relationship would Xu Xiaolin reveal Han Lin’s accident to him. Because Xu Xiaolin doesn’t want that man to get into trouble. But all of this contradicts the sisterly bond between Xu Xiaolin and Han Mo!”
