Chapter 151 A Glimmer of Light in the Darkness

Everyone looked at Wang Shen, nodded, and then began searching in their respective directions. Liang Zichen followed behind Wang Shen, glanced at the wheat fields on both sides of the road, and said, "Captain Wang, if the murderer drove the car into the wheat field, it will be quite difficult for us to find it in this dark."

Wang Shen shone his phone's light on Liang Zichen's face, then shook his head. "What you're describing is simply impossible. If something as large as a car drove into a wheat field, it would inevitably cause extensive damage, like a road clearing a path through it. If that were the case, we could easily spot the damage just by walking along the roadside. But have you seen anything like that so far?"

Perhaps due to the long working hours today, Liang Zichen's thinking became muddled. He failed to consider the logical consistency of many of his assumptions.

Liang Zichen looked at Wang Shen and lowered his head in embarrassment.

Wang Shen patted Liang Zichen on the shoulder and said, "Today is indeed quite tiring. I hope we can find that car soon." After saying that, Wang Shen and Liang Zichen continued forward by the light of their cell phones.

Although the road has been paved with cement, there are no streetlights. It's pitch black all around, and even with the faint light from my phone, I can't see much of the area. After walking for a while, a rumble of thunder sounded on the horizon, and the rain gradually intensified.

"How much battery does your phone have left?" Wang Shen stopped and turned to ask Liang Zichen.

Liang Zichen held his phone up to Wang Shen's screen. Unfortunately, both Wang Shen's and Liang Zichen's phones had reached the red warning line, less than 20% battery remaining.

"It seems we won't be able to find that car today." Wang Shen's tone revealed an overwhelming sense of helplessness.

Seeing Wang Shen's disappointed expression, Liang Zichen didn't know what to say. Just as the two were in silence, a bright flash of lightning suddenly streaked across the sky, instantly illuminating the entire area.

Liang Zichen blinked, then suddenly raised his right hand, his mouth wide open, and shouted, "Captain Wang, there's a room over there."

In the fleeting glimmer of lightning, Wang Shen caught a glimpse of Liang Zichen's surprised expression. Wang Shen suddenly turned to look in the direction Liang Zichen was pointing. But by then, the lightning had vanished, and darkness returned.

"Is there a house there? Is it a private residence?" Wang Shen asked Liang Zichen, his gaze fixed on the deep darkness.

"It should be, but it was only for a fleeting moment, and I couldn't see it very clearly. However, it doesn't seem like an ordinary house." Liang Zichen's voice trailed off as he spoke. Both Wang Shen and Liang Zichen were curious about the mysterious house in front of them.

"No matter what, we still have to go and take a look." After saying this, Wang Shen walked towards the direction of their destination.

Liang Zichen followed Wang Shen, but because the lightning had been so brief, he could only discern a general direction. Now Liang Zichen truly understood the meaning of the saying, "Looking at a mountain makes one's horse run itself to death." They walked for more than ten minutes, but still couldn't see the house.

Moreover, to prepare for emergencies and maintain contact with the outside world, Wang Shen and Liang Zichen had both turned off their phone flashlights. The two were now trudging forward in the pitch-black rainy night. Fortunately, there was only one paved road, with no side roads.

Wang Shen and Liang Zichen walked for another ten minutes or so, then Wang Shen stopped again. He held out his hand to look at it, then turned to Liang Zichen and said, "It's truly pitch black here."

Liang Zichen sighed helplessly, then nodded. "Captain Wang, do you think we might have already missed that house?"

"I can't really say for sure, you're the one who saw the house," Wang Shen said with a wry smile, then continued, "But just how far away is the house you saw from us?"

"Captain Wang, lightning only lasts for a split second, to be honest, I can't be sure. I just saw a house in front of us." Liang Zichen shook his head helplessly.

Wang Shen stood still, not moving forward. He turned around, facing one side of the wheat field. At that moment, a few muffled snorts sounded from the horizon. Then, several streaks of lightning pierced the sky.

In an instant, the entire wheat field was once again bathed in pale blue electric light. Wang Shen and Liang Zichen opened their mouths wide at almost the same time, their eyes staring at the scene before them.

"Captain Wang, this is it, this is it!" Liang Zichen shouted excitedly.

Wang Shen nodded heavily.

The lightning illuminated not only the entire wheat field, but also the house in front of Wang Shen and Liang Zichen. It turned out that Wang Shen and Liang Zichen had already reached the edge of the house. However, the house stood far from the road, nestled within the wheat field.

Strangely, the house was surrounded by wheat ears, and there was no road leading to it. Judging from this, the house had probably been abandoned for a long time.

What made Wang Shen and Liang Zichen even happier was not the house itself, but the certainty that they could find what they wanted in the vicinity of this house.

"It seems the murderer wasn't smart enough." Wang Shen turned to face Liang Zichen and smiled. Although Liang Zichen probably couldn't see Wang Shen's smile clearly.

“That’s right, but it’s also possible that the murderer had no choice. There might have been surveillance cameras waiting for him if he had gone a little further ahead.” Liang Zichen responded to Wang Shen with a smile.

As mentioned earlier, if the murderer intended to abandon the car in the wheat field, it would inevitably cause significant damage to the field. Right now, Wang Shen took out his phone again, using its remaining battery to illuminate the area in front of him.

The wheat field that appeared before Wang Shen had clearly been severely trampled. Now, it had even formed a path leading to the house.

"Captain Wang, this road was clearly formed after being run over by a car. That car should be near that house," Liang Zichen analyzed, looking at the wheat field in front of him.

“Yes.” Wang Shen nodded and turned off his phone’s light. “Let’s go in and take a look. But we still need to be careful.”

After speaking, Wang Shen walked ahead, constantly brushing aside the tangled ears of wheat, and stepped towards the house. In less than two minutes, Wang Shen and Liang Zichen stood before the house. Wang Shen's guess was correct; this house had likely been abandoned for a long time. The front door was gone, and the windows were so broken that not even shards of glass remained.

Wang Shen stepped through the door and turned on his phone's flashlight, illuminating the interior. The house wasn't large, and the interior was almost entirely unfinished, indicating that it had been abandoned by its owner before it was even completed.

After observing the interior of the house, Wang Shen walked through the house and headed directly to the back door.
