Chapter 191 Escape

"What's going on?" Xu Xiaolin also heard the strange noise in the hallway and shouted at Wang Shen. It was clear that Xu Xiaolin was frightened by the sound.

As Xu Xiaolin called out, Wang Shen had already rushed to the stairwell entrance. He didn't even have time to pay attention to Xu Xiaolin, and dashed down the stairs in a few large strides. However, the stairwell was too dark, and using his phone for light was inconvenient, thus slowing down his pursuit.

Xu Xiaolin didn't just stand by and watch. Although her reaction was a bit slow, she followed closely behind Wang Shen, chasing him down the stairs. Just as Wang Shen reached the bottom of the stairs, he heard another annoying bang from the front door. Judging from the sound, the dark figure from before must have already rushed out.

Wang Shen didn't give up the chase; instead, he rushed out the gate in the direction the shadowy figure had fled. Finally, Wang Shen saw the person's back. Fewer lights were on in the alleyway than before, perhaps because it was late and everyone was asleep. Wang Shen had to catch this person as soon as possible; otherwise, with the alleyway's complex layout, it would be difficult to ensure he wouldn't lose him.

Wang Shen's physical strength was definitely superior to that of the shadowy figure, but strangely, after chasing for several minutes, Wang Shen still couldn't close the distance between them. Wang Shen immediately understood the problem: the shadowy figure was very familiar with the layout of this alley, so it seemed this wasn't its first time here.

Who could this person be? Could it be the person right in front of him? A suspicious figure popped into Wang Shen's mind. In Wang Shen's opinion, as long as he caught this shadowy figure, he would have caught him red-handed.

Thinking this, Wang Shen gritted his teeth and quickened his pace. The dark figure turned another corner and disappeared around the bend. How could Wang Shen give up? He accelerated even further. After following the dark figure around the bend, Wang Shen found himself in a narrow alleyway, several hundred meters away from the next corner.

Wang Shen felt a surge of joy. If all went well, he would be able to intercept the shadowy figure in this alley. Sure enough, the shadowy figure was no match for Wang Shen's stamina. Wang Shen gradually quickened his pace, closing the distance between himself and the shadowy figure.

With less than a hundred meters to go, Wang Shen was genuinely pleasantly surprised. He hadn't expected to see tonight whether his initial guesses were accurate.

With only about ten meters to go, he was about to catch up. At that moment, Wang Shen seemed to have already gently extended his hand, preparing to subdue the dark figure not far away. Unexpectedly, as the dark figure ran, something was thrown backward from its hand.

The object flew towards Wang Shen precisely in his face. To avoid it, Wang Shen had no choice but to shift his body slightly and slow down. Initially, Wang Shen didn't want to deal with it. However, he vaguely noticed that what the shadowy figure had thrown resembled a book.

Wang Shen stopped in his tracks, then quickly bent down and picked the book up from the ground. "It's a diary," Wang Shen muttered to himself.

It turned out that Xu Xiaolin's long-lost diary had already been stolen by this shadowy figure. Now, in order to escape, the figure had no choice but to throw the diary away to slow Wang Shen down. Wang Shen, clutching Han Mo's diary, glanced once more at the direction the shadowy figure had fled.

Fortunately, the shadowy figure was still within Wang Shen's sphere of influence. If he resumed the pursuit now, it should still be in time. While thinking this through, Wang Shen took a step forward and started chasing the shadowy figure again. The narrow alley finally came to an end, and the shadowy figure veered off course and disappeared into another alley.

Wang Shen never gave up the chase, relentlessly pursuing the dark figure. Although the alleyway had many corners, fortunately, there weren't many forks in the road. Therefore, Wang Shen managed to keep up without losing sight of the pursuer.

"Great," Wang Shen thought to himself. Now, another narrow alleyway appeared before Wang Shen, and the dark figure was not far away.

"I'll definitely catch you this time." Wang Shen was full of confidence, as if he were capturing prey that had fallen into a trap.

Just a little bit more, just a little bit more, Wang Shen's hand was about to grab the dark figure.

"Ah! Wang Shen!" Suddenly, a shout startled Wang Shen. He paused, and the distance between him and the dark figure increased again.

Wang Shen turned his head at the sound and saw that it was indeed Xu Xiaolin. At that moment, he saw Xu Xiaolin fall to the ground, pressing her ankle with her hand and groaning.

Wang Shen glanced at the shadowy figure, only to see the distance between them growing ever wider. He gritted his teeth, sighed, and turned to run to Xu Xiaolin's side.

Wang Shen squatted down, then lifted Xu Xiaolin's foot with his hand and asked, "Can your foot still move?"

Xu Xiaolin frowned, tried her best to move her ankle, and then cried out, "It hurts a little."

"Miss, what are you doing following me here?" Wang Shen gave a wry smile and shook his head. Before Xu Xiaolin could say anything more, Liang Zichen ran to Wang Shen's side with three bottles of water.

Liang Zichen took a breath and said, "Finally found you guys. These alleyways are so winding."

As soon as Liang Zichen finished speaking, Wang Shen stood up from the ground and said, "Zichen, you look after her for now, I'm going to chase after that suspect." After saying that, he tossed the diary in his hand to Liang Zichen.

Before Liang Zichen could understand what was happening, he saw Wang Shen disappear around the corner of the alley.

Liang Zichen looked at the diary in his hand, then at Xu Xiaolin sitting on the ground, and handed her a bottle of water. "Beautiful lady, have some water."

Unexpectedly, Xu Xiaolin snorted loudly and ignored Liang Zichen. Liang Zichen scratched the back of his head, then unscrewed the bottle cap and took a few sips of water.

Liang Zichen helped Xu Xiaolin to the side, and not long after, Wang Shen returned.

"Captain Wang, I just heard you say you were going to chase after a suspect. What suspect?" Liang Zichen asked the question that had been bothering him for a long time as soon as he saw Wang Shen.

“We just found someone stealing a diary in the house, so I think this person must be related to Han Mo’s case. We originally wanted to catch him on the spot, but unexpectedly…” Wang Shen’s tone was slightly disappointed.

"Are there any clues that can help us continue our investigation of this person?" Liang Zichen asked.

Wang Shen shook his head and said, "There are hardly any streetlights around here, and the light is too dim to see the person's physical features clearly."

After saying this, Wang Shen glanced at Xu Xiaolin, who was being supported by Liang Zichen. "By the way, let me take you to the hospital."

Xu Xiaolin suddenly looked up at Wang Shen and asked, "Wang Shen, do you think I'm holding you back?"

Wang Shen glanced at Xu Xiaolin, and surprisingly nodded, saying, "It's not exactly a drag on. I know you just wanted to help. So this was an accident, and you don't need to worry about it."

Seeing Wang Shen's serious expression, Xu Xiaolin didn't press the matter further.
