Chapter Eight: Dr. Song's Diagnosis

Lin Su stared at the words on the diary for a long time, his eyes becoming somewhat sluggish.

"Officer Lin? Officer Lin?"

Lin Su didn't react at first. A few seconds later, he came to his senses and realized that the title "Officer Lin" seemed to be directed at him. To ensure the smooth running of the operation, Wang Shen probably lied to the psychologist sitting across from Lin Su, claiming that Lin Su was indeed a police officer. Lin Su closed his notebook and handed it back to Song Mu.

Song Mu was the psychologist standing before them, and Han Mo's only counselor during her lifetime. Lin Su, as arranged by Wang Shen, had come to see Song Mu today seeking clues about Han Mo's daily life. Song Mu was truly a refined man; his white coat accentuated his handsome features. Behind his black-rimmed glasses, however, his eyes held a maturity and gentleness beyond his years.

Lin Su glanced at Song Mu again. They seemed somewhat similar, not only in age but also in their career achievements. They were both young and accomplished.

The counseling room was spacious, divided into two sections. The outer room served as the assistant's office and waiting area, while the inner room was Song Mu's consultation room. The layout of the consultation room followed that of a typical counseling room, with a single color scheme and simple structure, which Lin Su guessed was intended to help clients relax.

“Dr. Song, this diary…” Lin Su looked at the notebook in Song Mu’s hand, paused, reached into his pocket, and pulled out his phone. “Could I take a few pictures of the diary entries to help us analyze the case?”

"Of course." From the first moment Lin Su saw Song Mu, Song Mu's face didn't show much expression. To say that Song Mu was unsmiling wouldn't be accurate, because even when Song Mu wasn't smiling, his expression was always very gentle, making people feel comfortable.

Lin Su took the diary from Song Mu again, flipping through it page by page, and then taking photos of each page with his phone's camera for archiving. A few minutes later, Lin Su looked at the photos on his phone, then lingered on the diary for a while before closing it and handing it back to Song Mu.

"Dr. Song, I believe Officer Wang has already told you why I'm here."

Song Mu stopped what he was doing and nodded. "Officer Lin, if there's anything I can do to help, I'll cooperate fully."

Lin Su's eyes remained fixed on the photos on his phone. Only after Song Mu finished speaking did he look up. "Was this diary left here by Han Mo?"

“Yes. Han Mo was initially wary of me, or rather, wary of everyone. She couldn't talk to anyone about her past and the accumulated shadows in her heart. Later, after she came to me for counseling more often, she seemed to develop some trust in me. I planned to let her talk about her past. But she couldn't bring herself to speak until one day, she gave me this diary. It was through this that I learned about her psychological issues. After that, this diary has remained with me.” Song Mu took a moment to reread the diary. As she flipped through it, her expression changed, showing regret or sadness. Perhaps this was the respect and grief a doctor feels for their patient and for the life lost.

"Judging from the diary, Han Mo's childhood was truly tragic." Lin Su clenched his fist as he spoke, his lips pursed, revealing a deep regret that was hard for most people to suppress.

"Everyone's life is a mixture of misery and joy, and there's nothing inherently to be distressed about. However, for Han Mo, her life seems to be more tragic."

"Are all psychologists as open-minded as you?" Lin Su loosened his fist, not entirely agreeing with Song Mu's words. Looking at Song Mu's expression, Lin Su saw a calm and composed face that inspired a sense of awe.

"Maybe. If a psychologist can't maintain a relatively neutral attitude towards the joys and sorrows of life, how can they help patients?"

"But Han Mo is still dead after all." Lin Su looked at Song Mu, his tone becoming calm. The notebook in his hand was already open, and the pen between his fingers was about to jot something down.

“Speaking of Han Mo’s death, from a doctor’s perspective, I was more or less negligent.” Song Mu stood up from his chair, walked to the water dispenser, picked up a paper cup, poured a glass of water, and placed it in front of Lin Su. “Sorry, I was busy with work and forgot to pour you some water.”

Lin Su picked up his water glass and took a big gulp. "Will Han Mo's childhood trauma have any impact on her as an adult? Oh, I mean psychologically and behaviorally."

“It will definitely have an impact. From my observation of Han Mo, these childhood traumas have had a significant impact on her and are the direct cause of her depression.”

"depression?"

"Yes, Han Mo came to me mainly because she discovered she had a tendency towards depression. After a series of tests and diagnoses, I found that her depression was quite severe. I originally suggested that she go to the hospital for some clinical treatment, but she refused outright."

"Do you know why she refused?" Lin Su put down his pen, waiting for Song Mu's answer.

"She is a lonely person, and also someone who is afraid of being alone. She doesn't like the hospital environment, finding it oppressive and closed off. She dislikes even more the smell of medicine that occasionally wafts out of the hospital. There was nothing I could do but try my best to develop a treatment plan for her."

Did Han Mo's condition improve afterward?

“Social and psychological interventions combined with basic medication can only stabilize her condition. I think a complete cure is very difficult, but in the process of communicating with her, I found that it still has some effect.” At this moment, Song Mu’s phone rang; it must be one of his patients. After making an appointment with the patient, Song Mu hurriedly hung up. “For a period of time, I noticed that Han Mo was significantly more cheerful, and many symptoms of depression in patients gradually disappeared in her.”
