Chapter Eighteen: The Conflicting Case

Wang Shen glanced at his watch; ten minutes had passed. There were probably still about twenty minutes before the garbage collector returned. Wang Shen walked to Han Mo's door again and took out his key from his pocket. Just as he was about to insert the key into the lock, he suddenly heard a sound coming from inside. Startled, Wang Shen didn't rush to open the door. He pressed his ear against the doorframe, carefully listening to the sounds inside.

About a minute passed, and Wang Shen heard no sound. He sat up straight, wondering if he had hallucinated. Just as he was about to open the door again, he abruptly pulled his hand back. He pressed his ear against the doorframe once more. There was a sound! There was definitely a sound inside! But no, this wasn't the sound he had heard before. What he heard now was the sound of the wind!

Strange? How could there be wind inside the house? If Wang Shen remembered correctly, after the crime scene investigation, the doors and windows of the house were not opened. Because Han Mo's relatives had not been found at the time, the key was kept at the police station along with Han Mo's file. If no one had come to the house since then, the entire house should still be completely sealed. If so, the whistling wind coming from inside is strange. Moreover, Wang Shen is now certain that the sound that startled him earlier was not this faint wind. It was the sound of a chair or table being moved. If Wang Shen's hearing is not faulty, then there must be someone inside the house! But who could it be?

Wang Shen hesitated outside the door for a moment, but finally decided to open it to see what was going on. He carefully inserted the key into the lock and turned it very gently. However, the lock was too old; no matter how gently he handled it, it inevitably made a scraping sound of rusty metal. With a click, the door opened a crack. Wang Shen touched his sidearm at his waist with one hand and quickly pushed the door open with the other. Sure enough! The balcony window was wide open, and a gust of cool air blew into the house. The house was pitch black. Wang Shen quickly slipped inside, scanning every corner of the living room with his gun. No one was in the living room.

Wang Shen crawled along the wall, found the light switch for the living room, and pressed it. The entire dark space was instantly filled with light. The furnishings were unchanged, just as they had been three years ago. According to Han Mo, she chose to live here because it was full of the everyday life of the city, which helped inspire her creative ideas. But Wang Shen didn't think so entirely. A successful, single woman still had certain standards for her living environment. The American industrial style of the interior was clearly expensive. This made the room feel out of place in the rest of the building.

The living room connects to the dining room. Wang Shen cautiously surveyed the area, but no one was there. There was a sound! Wang Shen quickly turned and pointed his gun at the bedroom door. The bedroom door was closed, but the sound had come from inside. This time, Wang Shen heard it clearly: the crisp sound of shoes hitting the wooden floor. Wang Shen cautiously moved towards the bedroom. He pressed his ear against the door and listened; the footsteps stopped.

Wang Shen remembered that Han Mo's bedroom had a very square layout. Therefore, if Wang Shen could quickly open the door, with just a gun and his own skills, he could easily subdue the person inside. Wang Shen gripped the bedroom doorknob, twisted it, and then kicked the door open.

"Don't move!" Wang Shen shouted.

A woman was sitting on Han Mo's bed, only her back visible. The living room light shone into the bedroom, gradually making the woman's silhouette clearer. Anyone else would have been terrified.

Wang Shen slowly lowered the muzzle of his gun. He holstered the pistol back at his waist. "What are you doing here? Where did you get the key?" Wang Shen said, taking two steps closer to Xu Xiaolin.

“I am my sister’s only relative. According to the inheritance law, this is now my property. Officer Wang, this constitutes illegal trespassing.” Xu Xiaolin stood up from the bed, turned around, and smiled slightly at Wang Shen.

Wang Shen was at a loss for words to refute Xu Xiaolin's statement. "If you still want to get the truth back to your sister, then don't destroy everything here yet."

"Of course I won't ruin this scene," Xu Xiaolin said, pouting.

"No disturbance at the scene?" Wang Shen looked at Xu Xiaolin with a puzzled expression. "Look outside." Wang Shen walked out of the bedroom and pointed to the balcony.

Xu Xiaolin glanced at Wang Shen with a puzzled look, then followed him out of the bedroom, her gaze following the direction Wang Shen was pointing. She stared at the balcony for a moment, then looked back at Wang Shen's face. "What's wrong?" Xu Xiaolin asked, completely bewildered, unsure of Wang Shen's intentions.

“This was originally a closed space. Even time can cause some clues to disappear without you realizing it, let alone the wind in nature,” Wang Shen sighed.

"What are you trying to say? I don't understand." Xu Xiaolin frowned and glanced in the direction Wang Shen was pointing. Suddenly, Xu Xiaolin seemed to understand Wang Shen's meaning, turning her head and staring at him with wide eyes. "You mean, you mean that window was closed before?"

"You know yourself that this is a locked-room mystery, so the windows are naturally closed. Wait, what do you mean by that?" Upon hearing Xu Xiaolin's words, Wang Shen's expression suddenly changed from helplessness to surprise.

“What I mean is, I didn’t open that window. I originally thought it was you…” Xu Xiaolin stopped abruptly mid-sentence. She stared at Wang Shen, her mind racing with memories of the past. “Wait, where did you get your key?” Xu Xiaolin suddenly inquired about the origin of Wang Shen’s key.
