Chapter Ninety-Nine: Theft

Xiao Ye choked back a sob, then glanced at Sima Chu's angry gaze and took two steps back. With a tearful voice, Xiao Ye pleaded, "This afternoon, after my friend and I went to the supermarket and bought durian cakes, I wanted to go back to the dorm to rest. When I got back, I found you weren't there. After I put my things down, I noticed Xiao Chu's computer was on. Then I thought about the career planning competition. I wanted to see what was so special about the planning document Sima Chu had been busy preparing. I glanced at her computer screen, and the presentation happened to be on the desktop. So I opened it and took a look. I swear, I really just wanted to take a look." At this point, Xiao Ye pulled a tissue from the desk behind her and wiped her nose.

"Then why did this happen?" Sima Chu's eyes were bloodshot, but his body stopped rushing towards Xiao Ye. Sima Chu waved to Xiao Qing, breaking free from her grasp. After a while, Sima Chu finally calmed down.

"I really don't know. I really don't know..." Xiao Ye repeated this sentence while shaking her head.

"Ye Zi, you should explain yourself clearly. If you don't know, who else does?" Xiao Qing stood to the side, frowning slightly, and urged Xiao Ye.

Xiao Ye's words still missed the point. Sima Chu waited, feeling helpless and anxious. Finally, Sima Chu sat back down in his chair and picked up his phone from the table.

"Xiao Chu, what are you trying to do?" Qi Huan asked after seeing Sima Chu's actions.

"I'll call the counselor and let them handle this." Sima Chu's tone was calm, but it revealed a kind of unwilling anger.

"No!" Upon hearing Sima Chu's words, Xiao Ye immediately stood up from her chair, rushed to Sima Chu's side, and snatched the phone from Sima Chu's hand.

"Please, don't." Xiao Ye held Sima Chu's phone in her hand, tears streaming down her face, pleading incessantly. "If you tell the counselor about this, the department might discipline me. If I get a disciplinary record in college, how am I supposed to graduate and find a job?"

“Xiao Ye, we can understand what you’re saying. But why can’t you understand others at all? When you saw Xiao Chu pointing fingers at Xiao Qing, why didn’t you explain things clearly? If Xiao Qing were identified as the culprit, wouldn’t she face the same situation as you? When you were messing with Xiao Chu’s computer, why didn’t you think about how important this presentation was to her? Is all the effort she’s put into this competition really so insignificant in your eyes?” Qi Huan sighed. As an observer, she simply couldn’t condone Xiao Ye’s behavior.

"I understand, I understand everything. But I'm scared." As she finished speaking, Xiaoye's tissue was soaked with tears again. "Actually, I really don't know what happened. I just wanted to open Xiaochu's presentation to see how she designed her career plan. But shortly after opening it, I don't know what key I pressed, and the computer crashed. I fiddled with it for a long time before I could restart it, but when I opened the presentation again, it was like this. I'm so sorry, so sorry to Xiaochu. But I really didn't mean to."

"You think you can just dismiss me with a simple 'it wasn't intentional'?" Sima Chu's eyes were red as he stared at Xiao Ye. "My family is poor, I don't have the same advantages as you, but I at least have the right to strive. What right do you have to take that away from me?" With that, Sima Chu stood up from his chair, straightened his laptop bag, walked over to Xiao Ye, snatched her phone, and left the dormitory.

Qi Huan and Xiao Qing stared silently at the closed dormitory door. Only Xiao Ye remained, slumped in her chair, gripping the backrest with her hands, her head buried in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. Every now and then, Xiao Ye would lift her red and swollen eyes and ask Qi Huan or Xiao Qing, "Xiao Chu won't tell the counselor, will she? I won't get punished, will I?"

Every time they heard this question, Qi Huan and Xiao Qing didn't know how to respond, and could only shake their heads indifferently. As midnight approached, Qi Huan became worried about Sima Chu, so she sent him a text message to inquire about his condition.

"How about it?"

"It's all good. I'm working on redoing the presentation."

"Okay, just let me know if you need any help."

"Okay, thank you."...

The career planning competition, which seemed like a farce, quietly came to an end. Sima Chu's efforts paid off, earning him second prize at the school level, but he still didn't get the chance to participate in the national competition. Qi Huan, as the other students had predicted, successfully participated in the national career planning competition with the highest score in the entire school.

For most people, four years of university life is an unforgettable period. The purity of love, the simplicity of friendship, and the carefree life during these four years attract thousands to this arena. However, for a minority, the reality is quite different.

Summer has ended, and even the autumn leaves are dwindling. The air has turned chilly, and everyone has started wearing thick coats. Everything on campus seems to have lost some of its vitality. But today, in a classroom in a certain teaching building on campus, the atmosphere is unusually serious.

"Everyone, quiet down. I have something to tell you." Class monitor Han Lin stood on the podium and tapped it a few times to get everyone's attention. The noise gradually subsided, and everyone turned their gaze to Han Lin. Han Lin coughed twice, cleared his throat, and said, "This isn't good news, but I have to tell you all." After saying this, Han Lin paused for a moment.

"Hey squad leader, can we stop pretending to be so serious right now? Just say what you want to say." Someone shouted from below.

"We're short a thousand yuan from the budget for our group outing next weekend," Han Lin said directly when he heard his classmate's request.

"A thousand yuan is missing? Is it someone who hasn't paid yet?"

Han Lin shook his head. "No, everyone who went has paid, but there's a thousand yuan short."

"What exactly do you mean? It's so tiring to listen to you talk. Are you implying that someone stole money?" Han Lin's speaking style during his university years was always so subtle, which is why he wasn't very popular.

"Yes," Han Lin replied affirmatively.

Upon hearing Han Lin's answer, the students below began to discuss it again.

"This money was kept by the class monitor, how could it have been stolen?" another student asked. Upon hearing this, everyone turned their attention to the class monitor sitting in the corner.

The class monitor was a thin girl. Now, this thin girl huddled in a chair in the corner, facing everyone's gaze, and timidly lowered her head.
