"Why do you say that?" another policeman joined their discussion. They all called this officer "Detective God" behind his back, naturally because of the many cases he had solved. By the way, this officer's name was Wang Xu.
Wang Xu stared at the young policeman who had spoken earlier. The policeman seemed intimidated and stopped talking. "It's alright," Wang Xu smiled, "Let's exchange our opinions."
The young policeman glanced at the leader, then at Wang Xu, and began his reasoning. “I’ve uncovered some clues. The deceased’s social relationships seem complex, but they’re actually quite simple. The neighborhood surveillance footage shows only one person frequently entering and leaving the deceased’s house. This person has been identified as Song Yi, a locally successful entrepreneur. I’ve already arranged for him to come to the station to cooperate with the investigation. However, around the time of the deceased’s death, Song Yi was at a restaurant with friends. This has been confirmed by the restaurant and his friends. Therefore, we can basically rule out the possibility that he committed the crime. Furthermore, I checked the deceased’s medical records at the hospital. The deceased had a history of moderate to severe depression and had been undergoing treatment. Finally, there’s corroborating evidence from a post on Weibo that resembles a suicide note. Therefore, I think the possibility of suicide is very high.” The young policeman recounted his deductions and the evidence he had gathered in one breath.
"Boss, assign him to be my assistant from now on. He's quite capable." Wang Xu smiled at the leading policeman and patted the young officer on the shoulder. Hearing his senior's praise, the young officer's lips unconsciously curved into a perfect smile.
“However, I have a different opinion.” Wang Xu’s expression turned serious. “There are still many issues to sort out here, and we can’t simply conclude that it was suicide. First, people who frequently come into contact with the deceased are not necessarily the murderers; the key is to investigate social relationships and find a motive for the murder. Second, even if it is Song Yi, even if he has an alibi, the suspicion of murder cannot be immediately ruled out. Also, is it necessarily the deceased who posted the suicide note on Weibo? I searched the house twice and found no signs of theft. But one thing is missing.” Wang Xu glanced at the bewildered young policeman with his furrowed brow as he said this.
"What is it?" the young policeman couldn't contain his curiosity and asked first.
“The phone.” Wang Xu pursed his lips. “I checked the IP address of that Weibo post and confirmed it was sent from the deceased’s own phone. But now, the phone has vanished. The post was sent three hours ago, and the deceased died after that. Would a dying person try to dispose of their phone?”
As Wang Xu spoke, the young policeman took out a notebook and wrote down the relevant information he provided.
“I also checked the restaurant where the deceased ordered food, and there are two suspicious points. Look at the takeout food on the table.” Wang Xu pointed to the food on the table, “Do you think a woman could eat so much food?”
The young policeman stopped writing and suddenly tapped his head: "If it's two people, then it's about right."
“That’s right. If that’s the case, then the deceased must have been waiting for someone. But if the deceased was waiting for someone, then it doesn’t make sense for him to commit suicide before that person appeared.”
The head and the young policeman nodded.
"Furthermore, according to the person who received the order call, there was something wrong with the phone call the deceased made. However, the employee who received the call didn't know what the problem was either, because there was absolutely no communication between the operator and the deceased during the ordering process."
"Zero communication?" The head looked at Wang Xu with some surprise.
"That's not quite right. I can't help it, my language skills are limited. To be precise, the deceased and the restaurant operator had a one-way communication, and the phone was hung up as soon as the conversation ended."
"Wasn't it the deceased who made the call?" the young policeman said, staring at Wang Xu.
"It was indeed a call made from the deceased's phone, and according to the operator, it was a woman's voice."
"If that's the case, then since we didn't hear the call, we can't be sure what the problem is, right?"
“That’s not wrong, but we can let our imaginations run wild. What if this call was made by the deceased before?”
Xu Xiaolin's novel ended there. Lin Su turned off the computer, but the plot of Xu Xiaolin's novel lingered in his mind.
