Chapter Sixty-Six: The Malfunctioning Sense of Smell

Seeing Qi Huan's condition, Wang Shen knew that saying anything more now wouldn't help them. Wang Shen patted Liang Zichen on the shoulder and left the intensive care unit with the attending physician.

"Have some water first." The attending physician filled two paper cups with water and handed them to Wang Shen and Liang Zichen.

"You're like a completely different person compared to when you're working," Wang Shen said, taking the water from the attending physician and looking at the doctor's peaceful smile.

“I hope you can understand that life is my top priority; nothing else matters.” The attending physician answered Wang Shen’s question with a smile. “By the way, I think you might need these things.” The attending physician seemed to remember something, turned around and walked to his cabinet, taking out a plastic bag from it.

Wang Shen took the plastic bag, opened it, and looked inside. It contained a bunch of dark, unsightly things. After thinking for a moment, Wang Shen suddenly realized that it must contain A-Cheng's clothes.

“Everything that patient had is here. I know your police contacted our hospital, so we were very careful when handling these things, wearing gloves the whole time. I looked at it, and there's nothing special, just some clothes and a key.” The attending physician sat down in his chair, took a sip of water, and explained the contents of the bag to Wang Shen.

"Thank you." Wang Shen nodded. "Do you have gloves?" Wang Shen suddenly turned his gaze to Liang Zichen and asked.

Liang Zichen shook his head helplessly.

"I should have some here, let me find it for you." After saying that, the attending physician stood up from his chair, walked to the cabinet, rummaged around, and found a pair of rubber gloves, which he handed to Wang Shen.

Wang Shen took the gloves and put them on. He rummaged through the plastic bag and found a clear, sealed plastic bag among a pile of charred clothes. He took the bag out; inside lay a set of keys. Holding the bag, he continued searching through the plastic bag. Just as the attending physician had said, besides some charred clothing, there was nothing else.

Wang Shen put the sealed plastic bag containing the keys back into the plastic bag, then handed the items to Liang Zichen. "Doctor, could you tell me more about the injured person's condition?"

"Just call me Wu Yi," the attending physician said with a smile, giving his name.

"Wu Yi?"

“Yes, Wu Yi, the character ‘Yi’ in ‘Woyi’ (以为).” Wu Yi emphasized the correct characters of his name. “This injured person has severe burns, with burns covering more than 70% of their body. The mortality rate for such severe burns is very high. Patients are prone to shock in the early stages of burns, which happened to this patient. Not only that, the patient also suffers from heart failure and infection. If an infection develops later, the patient's life will be in grave danger. Therefore, not only during these two critical days, but also for some time to come, close monitoring and treatment are necessary.” Wu Yi explained A-Cheng's condition to Wang Shen in detail.

"What are the chances of survival?" Wang Shen asked, frowning slightly after hearing Wu Yi's words.

"It's not high, but I'll do my best." Wu Yi replied with a serious expression, took a sip of water, pursed his lips, and then said, "By the way, I have something else here that I don't know if it will be of any help to you." After saying that, Wu Yi opened his drawer, took out a piece of paper, and placed it in front of Wang Shen.

Wang Shen examined the paper carefully for a while, then looked up at Wu Yi with an awkward smile. "Dr. Wu, I really don't recognize this character."

Wu Yi smiled and said, "When I went back to the office to process the injured person's medical records just now, I found his previous medical records at our hospital. So I just printed them out for you to see. According to the dates marked on the medical records, it was just in the last two days. It wasn't anything serious, just a bad cold, so he was on IV drips at the hospital for two days. However, given his physical condition, his chances of recovery are lower than those of an average person, and he is more prone to complications."

"A severe cold?" Upon hearing those three words, a thought suddenly flashed through Wang Shen's mind. "Dr. Wu, what are the symptoms of a severe cold?"

"Symptoms of a severe cold?" Wu Yi seemed a little puzzled by this question, but still patiently explained. "The symptoms of a severe cold are nothing more than general weakness, aches and pains in the limbs, a stuffy and runny nose, and sometimes fever."

"A stuffy nose and runny nose?" The vague idea that had been lingering in Wang Shen's mind suddenly became clear. "If someone has a stuffy nose and a runny nose, does that also mean they lose their sense of smell?"

“If the situation is serious, this can indeed happen, and sometimes it can be accompanied by a temporary loss of taste.” Wu Yi nodded, confirming Wang Shen’s idea.

Wang Shen suddenly realized. The reason the gasoline smell on the clothes didn't register with Acheng was because Acheng had a severe cold, causing him to lose his sense of smell. That's why the murderer seized this perfect opportunity, pouring gasoline on his clothes and exploiting Acheng's physical condition to deceive everyone. Furthermore, Acheng didn't get along well with his colleagues. Even if they smelled the gasoline, it was highly unlikely they would have much interaction with him because of it. The murderer had handled every step flawlessly. But only someone extremely familiar with Acheng's physical condition and living situation could have done all that.

Considering all this, only one name came to Wang Shen's mind: Qi Huan! But would she? Judging from the information Wang Shen had and Qi Huan's reaction just now, she didn't seem like the type to harm A Cheng. Was she acting? Wang Shen was a very rational person; he liked to use logic to judge the outcome of almost everything. However, thinking about Qi Huan's state just now, Wang Shen found it hard to bear treating her as a suspect.

"Okay, Dr. Wu, please keep a close eye on Acheng."

"Don't worry, this is my job."

"Then we won't disturb your work any longer." Wang Shen shook hands with Wu Yi and left Wu Yi's office.

"Zichen, what do you think of Qi Huan, that woman from earlier, and the injured man's relationship?" Wang Shen walked into the corridor and asked Liang Zichen.

"I think their relationship is very good. That woman must be the rumored female boss, right?"

“Yes, that’s how I feel too. But…” Wang Shen rubbed his temples, not continuing. “Let’s go check on the ICU.” With that, Wang Shen walked towards the ICU with a serious expression.

Before even reaching the entrance to the intensive care unit, two familiar figures came into Wang Shen's view. One was naturally Qi Huan. The other was surprisingly Han Lin. Qi Huan seemed quite angry, and with a flick of her wrist, she shook off Han Lin's hand.
