Chapter Ten: The "Rogue" as Described by the Waiter

The signboard with the word "Nothing" shone brightly with colorful lights, and the bar had a glass facade. Through the glass, men and women could be seen swaying to the music in the middle of the dance floor. Wang Shen and Xu Xiaolin pushed open the glass door and went inside. Xu Xiaolin had never been to a bar before and felt resistant to the dim lighting, loud music, and bustling crowd. Although Wang Shen didn't frequent bars either, he had visited a few times for work. Therefore, he wasn't as resistant to the bar's environment as Xu Xiaolin. Noticing Xu Xiaolin's unusual behavior, Wang Shen turned to her and smiled, saying, "It's too noisy here. How about I take you home first?"

“No need, I come to bars all the time.” Xu Xiaolin immediately put away her stiff expression, smoothed her slightly furrowed brows, and gave Wang Shen a smile as well.

Wang Shen could only shake his head with a wry smile, accepting Xu Xiaolin's stubborn insistence. The two walked a few more steps inside, where a waiter-like man came out to greet them. "Hello, are you two?" the waiter said with a fawning smile.

Wang Shen nodded.

"Alright, I'll arrange a less crowded seat for you two. You can whisper to each other and no one will hear you." The waiter's gaze lingered on Xu Xiaolin for a few moments, then he glanced at Wang Shen before giving him a sly smile.

Xu Xiaolin frowned again, letting out a distinct snort. However, the music in the bar was too loud, so no one noticed. Wang Shen and Xu Xiaolin followed the waiter, stepping on the shimmering colored lights on the floor, to a booth in the corner.

"Please take a look, this is our wine list." The waiter opened the menu, which he had been carrying under his arm, and placed it in front of Wang Shen.

Wang Shen glanced at the wine list and quickly closed it. "You're familiar with this place, do you have any recommendations?" Wang Shen asked the waiter with a smile.

Upon hearing this, the waiter's smile deepened, and his tone became even more attentive and friendly. "You've come to the right person. If you prefer a lighter taste, these beers are quite good, though they're on the higher alcohol content and suitable for men." As he spoke, the waiter opened the beer menu, his finger tracing the names of the beers.

Wang Shen glanced at the beer menu; it was just some ordinary imported beer, but the prices were several times higher than in stores. However, Wang Shen didn't argue; he simply smiled and nodded.

"Of course, if you prefer a stronger flavor, then you can try this vodka." The waiter then moved his finger to the words "Absolut Vodka".

Wang Shen pointed to the beer menu with his finger, "Let's get this set of beers."

"Alright! And what about this beautiful lady?" The waiter stepped aside and turned his gaze to Xu Xiaolin.

"She doesn't drink alcohol, so I'll just get her a non-alcoholic mojito." Wang Shen closed the wine list and handed it back to the waiter.

"Your boyfriend is so thoughtful." After saying that, the waiter took the menu and happily walked to the bar.

"He seems to have misunderstood something." Xu Xiaolin pouted as she watched the waiter's retreating figure. "How can someone with such poor judgment be a waiter?" Xu Xiaolin complained again, sounding annoyed.

"Mr. Xu, maybe people think that handsome men and beautiful women should be a couple," Wang Shen chuckled, teasing Xu Xiaolin.

"Officer Wang, I didn't expect you to be such a 'refined scoundrel' too." Xu Xiaolin pretended to be angry as she looked at Wang Shen. "But Wang Shen, you're really extravagant. That wine must have cost several times more than in ordinary stores."

“Writer Xu, what do you think this place is? It’s only natural that drinks are expensive in bars. Besides…” Wang Shen leaned forward slightly towards Xu Xiaolin and lowered his voice. “You’ve noticed, this waiter’s a bit dim-witted, and his mouth probably won’t stay shut. Letting him earn some money for drinks might help us find out the information we need.”

"It's just finding someone. We know what Zheng Wu looks like, we can find him ourselves," Xu Xiaolin said nonchalantly.

“Young Miss, look at the lighting here. It’s only bright enough to barely make out a person’s figure. If we really have to search for him face to face, we might be exposed before we even find Zheng Wu.”

"So, you want to get some useful information from that waiter. Oh! Maybe he can even help us find it." Xu Xiaolin stared at Wang Shen for a while, then added, "Cunning and calculating."

While Wang Shen and Xu Xiaolin were talking, the same waiter approached them with a tray. He placed two glasses, six bottles of beer, and a non-alcoholic mojito in front of Wang Shen and Xu Xiaolin respectively. "If you need anything else, please feel free to ask me," the waiter said with a smile, before turning to leave.

"Handsome, please wait a moment." Wang Shen called out to the waiter.

"Is there anything else?" The waiter turned around with a smile.

"Can I ask you about someone?" As soon as Wang Shen finished speaking, he saw that the waiter's smile had mostly disappeared, his eyes were darting around in their sockets, and he was holding the tray in front of his chest.

"Are you a police officer?" The waiter tilted his head and asked in a low, tentative tone.

“Of course not.” Wang Shen chuckled and waved his hand. “It’s just that a friend recommended we come here, saying he comes here often. But I haven’t been able to find him lately, sigh!” Wang Shen sighed heavily. “To be honest, this friend still owes me money, so we came here to try our luck.”

"I see. Well then, let me see what your friend looks like. But with so many people coming and going here every day, I can't guarantee I'll recognize him."
