Chapter Thirteen: The Cuckolded Man

Wang Shen and Xu Xiaolin entered a large office one after the other. Zheng Wuze was escorted into the room by two policemen, one on each side. Wang Shen turned on the light and saw a projector at the front of the office, with the screen rolled up and hanging in mid-air.

"Can this be connected to the projector over there?" Xu Xiaolin asked Wang Shen, pointing to the computer next to her.

"Can."

Xu Xiaolin reached into her pocket and found a USB drive in her hand. She skillfully turned it on, plugged in the USB drive, and located the video file she needed. The filename was strange, labeled "Revenge 1".

The projector screen slowly lowered, and everyone present, except Xu Xiaolin, was filled with curiosity. For Zheng Wu, Han Mo's death was like a disaster. It not only brought to light Zheng Wu's rape case from years ago but also implicated a more serious murder case. However, until now, Zheng Wu has vehemently denied any involvement in his wife's murder. What horrifying scene would appear on the screen before them to force Zheng Wu to confess?

The video playback has finally started...

On a dark night with a few stars and a bright moon, the cold light of the moon filled the entire screen. Perhaps due to the phone's camera resolution, the image wasn't very clear. A small grove of trees appeared on the screen, and not far from it, a person stood. Judging from their silhouette, they were obese and carrying a burlap sack on their back. As the camera moved, the person walked deeper into the grove. Then, they put down the sack, looked around a few times, and finally turned around…

"Stop!" At Wang Shen's command, the screen paused. Wang Shen stood up from his chair, staring at the person's face on the screen. The prominent scar on the profile was clear evidence of their identity.

Everyone's gaze shifted to Zheng Wu's face. His previous arrogance had vanished; he slumped in his chair, swallowing hard, his Adam's apple bobbing back and forth. Xu Xiaolin chuckled inwardly and pressed the play button again.

The video/audio display resumed...

Zheng Wu turned around again, squatted down, and slowly untied the burlap sack. He carefully pulled the sack down, finally revealing its contents. To be precise, it was a person, seemingly a dead woman. Surprisingly, the sack also contained a tool for digging. Zheng Wu picked up the tool, found a suitable spot, and began digging. Based on the time he spent digging, the soil in the grove should be soft and loose. After more than an hour, a large pit was formed. Zheng Wu tied the sack tightly again, threw the entire sack into the pit, and then filled it back in with the soil piled around the edge. The figure disappeared from the frame, and the camera began to pan, filming the surrounding environment.

The video finally ended, and Xu Xiaolin unplugged the USB drive. Wang Shen's gaze fell on Xu Xiaolin again, lingering for a long time. Xu Xiaolin, however, seemed more relaxed, simply smiling at Wang Shen.

"Can I have this video?" Wang Shen asked Xu Xiaolin.

"Okay, I'll send a copy to your email." Xu Xiaolin nodded with a smile.

"So, do you have anything else to explain?" Wang Shen turned to Zheng Wu again.

Faced with irrefutable evidence, Zheng Wu had neither the strength nor the ability to make any more futile defenses. "After all these years, I've finally spoken out about what's been hidden in my heart, and it's actually made me feel much lighter," Zheng Wu said with a bitter laugh.

"Does this mean he's turning over a new leaf?" Xu Xiaolin stood directly opposite Zheng Wu, holding a USB drive in her hand, looking at Zheng Wu with schadenfreude.

"Alright." Wang Shen interrupted Xu Xiaolin, then turned his gaze to Zheng Wu. "Since you're relieved, why don't you tell us why you killed your wife?" Wang Shen's tone was calm, without any condescending pressure.

Zheng Wu nodded and said, "Now that you all know the truth, I'm not afraid to tell you what happened. Anyway, over the years, no one has ever listened to me."

It all started that evening...

Winters in Jiangnan are cold and damp, and with frequent drizzles, a fine, chilly air always hangs in the air. Since going bankrupt, Zheng Wu has lived a life of poverty. If it weren't for Han Shuang's help, his family would likely have starved to death on the streets long ago. The rented room Zheng Wu currently lives in is beyond cramped and shabby; it's essentially a dilapidated factory building far from the city. There are only a few households in the entire factory, and apart from the occasional stray dog and cat foraging for food, there's hardly anyone around. Zheng Wu likes to drink, especially in this cold weather. In his words, alcohol is a good thing—it warms the body and emboldens him. Han Shuang loathes this useless man. More than once, Han Shuang has regretted her initial decision. But there's no way around it; Han Shuang knows she can't resist the temptation of money and must endure the betrayal of her current fate.

The sunset was beautiful today, a clear sky after a long period of rain. Han Shuang sat on the edge of the bed, opened the last bit of foundation she had, and gently applied it to her face. Halfway through, she got up and went to the bathroom. She found the only mirror in the toilet and looked at her reflection. Han Shuang gently touched her cheek, then chuckled sheepishly. Time, indeed, never spares anyone. Time seemed particularly cruel to Han Shuang. Han Shuang picked up the remaining foundation and vigorously smeared it onto her face a few more times. As she prepared to apply more, she saw the little foundation left in the box and abandoned the idea.

The door was slammed a few times. That damn sound. Han Shuang cursed inwardly, turned around, walked a few steps to the door, unbolted it, rolled her eyes at the door, and then went into the bathroom.
