Chapter Thirty-Seven: Another Suicide?

Song Mu's confession ends here.

Wang Shen shifted his gaze from the computer screen to Song Mu, who was slumped in his chair. Song Mu's face was completely devoid of the radiance he possessed in life. Indeed, a dead person's face is rarely handsome. Otherwise, why would it be called a "dead person's face"? Even if someone was successful in their career and handsome in life, they will soon turn into a pile of bones after death. Thinking of this, Wang Shen couldn't help but feel a pang of regret. Because the crime scene needed to be preserved, Song Mu's body hadn't been moved. Judging from Song Mu's facial condition, he was extremely pale, even giving the impression that Song Mu had aged overnight. Wang Shen's lips were white, suggesting he had died of poisoning.

Wang Shen walked over to the forensic doctor and asked, "Can we determine the cause of death now?"

"Captain Wang, the specific cause is still unclear. However, based on the symptoms, the deceased likely took an overdose of sleeping pills."

"Sleeping pills?" Wang Shen glanced at Song Mu's body with a puzzled look, then understood. According to Song Mu's confession, she had likely planned to commit suicide. Therefore, taking sleeping pills wasn't a bad way to end her life. Wang Shen carefully examined Song Mu's body. The clothes Song Mu was wearing were exactly the same as the ones Wang Shen had seen yesterday. Then, Wang Shen turned his gaze to Song Mu's shoes. That's right, even the shoes hadn't been changed. If that was the case, it meant that after Wang Shen left the consultation room yesterday, Song Mu had stayed there until she ended her life.

As Wang Shen pondered the details of Song Mu's suicide, he crouched down slightly to examine Wang Shen's hands. His ten fingers were twisted. One hand was clenched into a fist.

"Is taking sleeping pills a particularly painful way to commit suicide?" Wang Shen walked back to the forensic doctor and asked this question.

"I don't think so. Sleeping pills are drugs that anesthetize the central nervous system, and patients who take them will become drowsy. If an overdose is taken, the patient will not be able to wake up on their own and may even die. So, from this point of view, suicide with sleeping pills is not accompanied by great suffering. Otherwise, so many people would not choose this method of suicide."

After listening to the forensic doctor's report, Wang Shen felt puzzled by the condition of Song Mu's fingers. Wang Shen tried to guess what circumstances would cause someone's fingers to be in such an unnatural bent state. He racked his brains, concluding that it could only be due to extreme tension or pain. However, this guess contradicted the symptoms of death from sleeping pills. An overdose of sleeping pills shouldn't cause such finger twisting.

"Captain Wang, this looks like the deceased's suicide note. I didn't expect this person to have such poor mental fortitude; he committed suicide before we could even arrest him." A young policeman walked to Wang Shen's side after reading the text on the screen and sighed.

"What, you think the deceased committed suicide?" Wang Shen looked at the young policeman standing beside him and smiled.

"Don't you think so, Captain Wang?" The young policeman looked at Wang Shen with surprise.

Wang Shen didn't answer the young policeman's question but instead examined the scene of the death. Wang Shen had died from an overdose of sleeping pills. Therefore, he would have drunk water while taking the sleeping pills. Thinking of this, Wang Shen suddenly focused his gaze on the water glass on the desk. Something was wrong with that glass. Wang Shen frowned, glanced at the deceased's posture before death, and then re-examined the water glass on the desk. There was still half a glass of water left.

"No, Song Mu probably didn't commit suicide," Wang Shen muttered softly. Wang Shen's judgment wasn't entirely based on guesswork, but on ample factual evidence. He replayed his meeting with Song Mu from yesterday. Although he had only met Song Mu once, he had noticed a crucial habit of Song Mu's: Song Mu was undeniably left-handed. Whether picking up or putting down a water glass, Song Mu habitually used his left hand. Wang Shen had already noticed this yesterday. Furthermore, the fact that all the stationery on Song Mu's desk was placed on the left side was enough to corroborate Wang Shen's suspicion. Left-handedness is a habit that cannot be changed without special attention. However, the water glass was now placed on Song Mu's right side, which contradicted his left-handed habit. Why would someone who had already resigned themselves to death deliberately change their habits?

Therefore, there can only be one explanation for the water glass placed on the right. This water glass wasn't placed on Song Mu's desk. If it wasn't Song Mu, then who was? Wang Shen began to presume Song Mu's death was a homicide. The murderer rushed into Song Mu's office, subdued him, and forced him to take a large dose of sleeping pills, creating the illusion of suicide. No, this hypothesis has too many flaws. First, why didn't Song Mu, a strong and healthy man, resist? Because the crime scene investigation showed no signs of a struggle in the consultation room. Second, there are the words on the computer screen. Wang Shen didn't believe these words could have been written by someone else. If these words were indeed written by Song Mu himself, why would he cooperate so readily in writing them, creating the illusion of suicide?

Wang Shen pressed his temples, looking somewhat tired.

"Captain Wang, you haven't had breakfast yet, have you? Have a cup of coffee to perk you up." Just as Wang Shen was frowning and deep in thought, a policewoman brought him a cup of heartwarming coffee.

After thanking him, Wang Shen took the coffee and drank a few sips. Suddenly, the rim of the coffee cup briefly touched his lips. Following the previous assumption, Song Mu must have seen the person who wanted to kill him. Therefore, his reaction was the same as Liang Li's when she saw him: utter terror. However, there were no signs of a struggle in the room, indicating that Song Mu had lost the ability to resist. Therefore, in extreme fear, Song Mu desperately twisted his fingers, resulting in his current state. But how did the murderer render Song Mu incapable of resistance in his own consulting room?

Wang Shen took two steps toward the glass cabinet, slowly leaving the area around the desk. He checked the cabinet; there were no traces left. He then turned and walked to the water dispenser. The water dispenser and the nearby trash can remained quietly in their original positions, just as they had been when he left the day before. Suddenly, a small object caught his eye. Next to the water dispenser was a large potted plant. Beside the planter was another water glass.

Wang Shen waved to the policeman behind him and asked for another pair of rubber gloves. He picked up the water glass from the ground and carefully examined its design and the colors and patterns on its surface. Where had he seen this glass before? That's right, yesterday…
