Chapter Thirty-Three: The World of the Rich

"Dr. Song, do you know how much the shoes the murderer was wearing were worth?" Wang Shen paused for a moment, looking at Song Mu.

Song Mu's face was ashen; he neither looked at Wang Shen nor answered Wang Shen's questions.

“That’s a lot.” Wang Shen stretched out all five fingers, feigning surprise. “But then again, these high-end luxury shoes are definitely worth the price. Although I really can’t understand the world of the rich. Luckily, the murderer wore these shoes, which allowed me to find the purchase record at the boutique. It’s quite a coincidence, really, the purchase record shows that Dr. Song also bought these shoes. You really have the heart to do this to yourself.”

After Wang Shen finished speaking, Song Mu suddenly opened her eyes wide and looked at him. Wang Shen caught a great deal of confusion in Song Mu's eyes, which puzzled him. However, Song Mu didn't say anything more, and after glancing at Wang Shen, she looked away again.

“Furthermore, we also found a clown mask at the scene. At first, I was puzzled as to why the murderer would leave a clown mask at the crime scene, but then I gradually realized why. There were no surveillance cameras in the alley where the crime occurred, so the murderer was safe inside. But once outside the alley, there were cameras everywhere on the street. The murderer considered this and decided to discard the mask at the crime scene. And I guess the murderer's attire at the time probably wasn't suitable for carrying that strange mask. Dr. Song, don't you think so?” Wang Shen would stop and ask Song Mu a question after providing each clue, to observe Song Mu's expression and reaction. Song Mu just frowned, his index fingers interlaced, and ignored Wang Shen's questions.

"To find out, I specifically checked the surveillance footage from several intersections. Strangely, the crime occurred in the early morning, but the surveillance cameras from that time period didn't capture any suspicious individuals. Dr. Song, why do you think that is?"

"I really don't understand the killer's criminal psychology." Perhaps to prevent Wang Shen from becoming suspicious, Song Mu forced a smile and answered Wang Shen's question.

"I've thought about this too. Could the murderer really turn into a fly and fly away? Later, I tried to think about it from the murderer's perspective. Finally, I found the answer. In the early morning, when there are few people around, if the murderer were exposed to surveillance cameras at that time, the target would be too obvious. So the murderer chose to hide in the alley temporarily, and then come out of the alley disguised as an ordinary person when there are more people in the morning. In this way, even if we want to investigate, we will not know where to start because the target group is too large. The murderer is really a meticulous person."

“Indeed, from this point of view, the murderer disguised himself very well.” After saying this, Song Mu pulled out a file from his desk and began to read it.

“But…” Wang Shen paused deliberately for a few seconds after saying those two words. As expected, Song Mu put down the file in his hand and looked up at Wang Shen. “Because before Liang Li was murdered, I talked to her about Sang. From her, I learned that Sang had been in contact with a handsome man. And that handsome man had given Sang a sum of money. I think the purpose of this money was to get Sang to testify against Zheng Wu as a bribe. Hmm? Dr. Song is quite handsome.” Wang Shen wasn’t joking; Song Mu’s appearance really could be described as handsome.

“As for the word ‘handsome,’ I think Officer Wang is more deserving than I am.” Song Mu was not angered by Wang Shen’s repeated provocations, but instead smoothed over the unfunny joke Wang Shen made.

“We compared the surveillance video from the early morning, and a man who was ‘fully armed’ appeared in the video. So we couldn’t see his face clearly. But judging from his build, he really looks like Dr. Song. It’s like they were made from the same mold.”

Just as Wang Shenggang finished speaking, Song Mu tossed the file folder on his desk, his tone turning angry. "Officer Wang, such slanderous speculation is hardly something a competent officer should do."

Faced with Song Mu's anger, Wang Shen merely smiled faintly. "Of course, the conclusions drawn from the surveillance video are all just speculations. But the shoe size detected by the tread pattern is strikingly consistent with the size you purchased, Dr. Song." Wang Shen actually walked around the desk and stood beside Song Mu.

Startled, Song Mu immediately stood up from her chair, took a step back, and looked at Wang Shen with a hint of panic in her eyes. "What exactly do you want?"

Wang Shen glanced down at Song Mu's shoes, said nothing, and walked back to his original spot. "Regarding the fact that you bought those shoes, Dr. Song, I think you have no objection to that, right?" Wang Shen tilted his head slightly, looking at Song Mu.

Song Mu did not answer, but simply nodded slightly.

"Okay, in that case, where are those shoes now? Can I see them?"

“These are my personal belongings. I’m not your prisoner, so I shouldn’t be obligated to show them to you.” Song Mu’s usual refined demeanor was completely gone at this moment, and the anger in his tone was obvious.

"Of course, but if you can provide the shoes you bought so I can inspect them, wouldn't that clear your name? If your name is cleared, I won't have to bother you anymore. Wouldn't that be better?" Wang Shen's tone remained completely emotionless throughout. Perhaps only when someone is honestly recounting what they have seen and thought can they be so frank and fearless.

“I’ve already thrown those shoes away.” After saying that, Song Mu sat back in his chair, leaned back against the chair, and looked at Wang Shen expressionlessly.

"I threw it away!" Wang Shen deliberately exaggerated his expression, raising his voice several octaves. "Dr. Song is really rich. How could you just throw away such an expensive pair of shoes like that?" Wang Shen didn't want to pursue the matter further. According to the luxury store's purchase records, only one pair of shoes in Song Mu's size had ever been sold. Wang Shen only needed to have the police's technical department analyze the shoe sole pattern on the banknote. If the size of the shoe matched the size of the shoes Song Mu bought, then Song Mu would have no way to deny it.

Song Mu stared coldly at Wang Shen, still not answering his question. Suddenly, Wang Shen walked to the window and flung it open. Instantly, the noise from the street filled the consultation room. "From here, you can really see the traffic downstairs very clearly. I've been thinking, why would the murderer want to kill Liang Li? Based on my conversation with Liang Li, I think there's only one possibility: it's related to Sang." With that, Wang Shen stood at the window and glanced back at Song Mu, who was sitting in the office chair.
