Speaking haltingly, Wang Shen wrote this sentence in his notebook and then flipped back a few pages. Regarding the descriptions of Han Mo's tone on the phone, Zheng Wu and Manager Han of the "Spicy" restaurant were strikingly similar. Wang Shen and Xu Xiaolin had already discussed this issue. In Wang Shen's mind, he had roughly sketched out the circumstances surrounding Han Mo's two phone calls. Regarding Han Mo's case, whether it was homicide or suicide, Han Mo should have made those two calls while stabbed. At that time, Han Mo was enduring immense pain, which caused her voice to tremble. However, what Wang Shen couldn't understand was Han Mo's purpose in making those two calls.
"And then you went to Han Mo's house?"
"Yes!" Zheng Wu answered without hesitation, his face still showing a nonchalant expression.
In Wang Shen's view, Zheng Wu's emotions when mentioning Han Mo were strange. There was disgust, resistance, and even some anger. Normally, these negative emotions should arise from a victim's feelings towards their persecutor. But the situation seemed completely reversed. "Why do you feel obligated to go to the appointment when you receive a call from Han Mo? You could have chosen to refuse, couldn't you?"
Zheng Wu immediately dropped his nonchalant disgust, rolled his eyes, and carefully considered the question Wang Shen had raised. Then, Zheng Wu shifted uncomfortably, his hands awkwardly clasped together. "I... I thought she wanted me to go for something good," Zheng Wu stammered, fabricating a flimsy excuse.
"Good news? What good news could there be?" Wang Shen's eyes widened, filled with questions and curiosity.
To an outsider, it would likely seem that Zheng Wu hadn't bathed in days and was infested with lice. Zheng Wu didn't look at Wang Shen, nor did he lower his head; instead, he slightly raised it, his body swaying uncomfortably from side to side. His gaze wandered, sometimes landing on the table, sometimes on the wall beside him. In the end, Zheng Wu stammered and couldn't answer Wang Shen's question.
“Perhaps I can help you answer this question.” Xu Xiaolin stood behind Wang Shen, gave a cold laugh, then walked to the table and took out a voice recorder from her pocket. “However, before I help you answer the question, you should listen to this first.”
Xu Xiaolin pressed the play button on the recorder, and a woman's voice immediately came through. "That's not all, he's also killed someone. If you promise to let me go, I'll tell you everything. And I really haven't done anything wrong… Zheng Wu used to have a wife, but he killed her. Yes, killed her. I'm not making this up, he told me himself… How could he tell me? Because he was drunk, and he just started talking about this secret. Zheng Wu isn't very popular, so he can't talk to anyone about this. I understand, it's very uncomfortable for someone to have such a big secret in their heart, they need someone to confide in. I've told you everything I know, you can…" Xu Xiaolin pressed the close button, and the woman's voice disappeared.
Zheng Wu finally calmed down, his eyes fixed on the recorder on the table. He recognized the voice on the recorder as Sang's. After watching so many plays, Zheng Wu finally understood the meaning of the phrase "a prostitute is heartless." Anger slowly rose in Zheng Wu's heart. This anger manifested on his face, most noticeably in his furrowed brows. And the glaring scar on his cheek seemed tailor-made to complement his fierce appearance. Xu Xiaolin picked up the recorder and put it back in her pocket. Zheng Wu's gaze followed the recorder and slowly moved to Xu Xiaolin.
"She's talking nonsense!" Zheng Wu's emotions surged again. He slammed his hands on the table and was about to lunge towards Xu Xiaolin. Fortunately, Zheng Wu was subdued by two policemen beside him just as he was in mid-air.
Zheng Wu wasn't the only one shocked after listening to the recording; Wang Shen was too. However, the two kinds of shock were different. Wang Shen looked at Xu Xiaolin for a while, wanting to ask something, but now wasn't the time to exchange information, so he shifted his gaze to Zheng Wu. "You better behave yourself!" Wang Shen was unusually angry, slamming his fist heavily on the table, the sound far louder than Zheng Wu's. The interrogation room suddenly fell silent. Zheng Wu's anger hadn't subsided, but he dared not make any further inappropriate movements.
"Is this recording that woman's statement from just now?" Wang Shen turned to look at Xu Xiaolin.
Xu Xiaolin nodded.
Wang Shen picked up his phone and dialed a number. Judging from his conversation, the call was likely to the archives department. After the call, the interrogation room fell silent again. No one was interested in breaking the atmosphere. Until the door to the interrogation room was pushed open, and a police officer entered, handing Wang Shen a file folder.
Wang Shen pulled all the papers out of the file folder and began reading them one by one. "It's a missing person case from many years ago. Is it really as the confession said?" Wang Shen held one of the papers in his hand and looked at it for a long time. As he spoke, he turned to look at Xu Xiaolin.
This piece of paper records a missing person case from many years ago: Han Shuang disappeared on [date missing]. The person who reported the case was Zheng Wu. Relationship: Husband and wife.
"I was drunk. Yes, I was drunk and talking nonsense. My wife disappeared back then, I didn't kill her, I didn't." Zheng Wu began to explain his drunken slip of the tongue in a flustered manner.
"That night, Han Mo called you to her house, and the reason you didn't dare refuse is probably because Han Mo has some leverage over you." Xu Xiaolin completely ignored Zheng Wu's explanation and instead gave her judgment regarding the question Wang Shen had just raised. "Han Shuang is Han Mo's mother, and Han Mo probably witnessed your murder of your wife. In that case, it's inevitable that you were blackmailed by Han Mo. After all, this is a matter of life and death."
