The driver who caused the accident looked at Sang's photo with surprise in his eyes. He examined the photo for a while before handing it back to Wang Shen. "I didn't expect it to be her. The wicked will get their just desserts." After saying this, the driver took a drag of his cigarette, exhaled a smoke ring, and looked out the window. The fear and guilt that had been lurking in his eyes seemed to have lessened considerably.
"Can you tell me how you met?" Wang Shen put away the photos and stared at the driver who caused the accident.
The driver took a few more drags on his cigarette, stubbed it out, and calmed himself down before looking at Wang Shen and saying, "Actually, I just wanted her dead." There wasn't a trace of hesitation or worry in his voice. The driver now was a completely different person from the one at the scene of the accident.
Wang Shen and Captain Li exchanged a glance, both feeling that this traffic accident might not be as simple as it seemed.
"Do you mean to imply that you deliberately ran over and killed the victim?" The slight smile that had been on Wang Shen's face vanished.
To everyone's surprise, the driver gave a bitter smile and shook his head. "I wanted her dead, but I really didn't hit her on purpose. I've already said that when the accident happened, I had no idea it was this woman."
"Since that's the case, can you tell me what's going on between you two?" Wang Shen took an ashtray, placed it next to the driver who caused the accident, and took out a cigarette from the pack, handing it to him.
"This woman hurt my daughter back then," the driver said bitterly, borrowing a lighter from Wang Shen and lighting a cigarette.
"What exactly happened?"
“That day, I took my daughter to the hospital for a follow-up appointment. As we approached the hospital, a car suddenly came out from around the corner and crashed straight into us. My daughter and I both fell to the ground, and my daughter broke her hand. Having driven a truck for years, I could immediately tell which car had violated the rules. But before we could say anything, this woman got out of the truck and started yelling at us. She looked rather shady, so I figured she couldn't be a good person, and since my daughter was injured, I was in a hurry to get her to the hospital and didn't want to argue with her. But she wouldn't let it go. In the end, I had to call the traffic police, and they arrived. My daughter is already weak, and this woman caused her even more pain. If I had known it was her, I would have stepped on the gas.” The driver's eyes grew increasingly resentful, the last trace of worry and fear completely gone.
“If you do that, I’m afraid you’ll never see your daughter again,” Wang Shen sighed, whether out of sympathy or admonition, it was unclear.
After hearing Wang Shen's words, the driver suddenly fell silent, his eyes gradually clouding over with worry. "But I was just saying if. I didn't do that after all. It really was just a normal traffic accident. I swear! Please, my daughter really can't live without me." After saying the last sentence, the driver's previous ruthlessness towards Sang vanished completely, and his swollen eyes welled up with tears.
Is there anyone at home to take care of your daughter?
"Yes." The driver nodded. "My mother came all the way from our hometown." The driver's voice choked with emotion.
"You might have to come back to the police station with me for a few days," Wang Shen said helplessly, closing the notebook beside him.
"Officer, I'm not the murderer! I'm really not the murderer!" The driver became agitated as soon as he heard that Wang Shen intended to detain him. He stood up from his chair and took two steps toward Wang Shen.
Captain Li gestured towards the door, and two traffic police officers rushed in. Wang Shen waved to Captain Li, then looked at the driver who caused the accident: "I'm just doing my job, it doesn't mean you're guilty. Trust me, cooperate with the police investigation. If you're innocent, I will definitely clear your name. For your daughter's sake, I hope you can be more rational."
After hearing Wang Shen's words, the driver who caused the accident thought about his daughter again, weighed the pros and cons, and finally sat back down quietly.
Wang Shen also stood up from his chair and leaned close to Captain Li's ear: "Captain Li, I need to trouble you with a few things. He just said that the deceased hit his daughter with his car. Could you please help me retrieve the deceased's driver's license and the record of this traffic accident, including the vehicle information?"
"Don't worry, leave it to me." Captain Li nodded.
"I'll take this person with me for now, and I'll complete the necessary paperwork later." After saying this, Wang Shen said goodbye to Captain Li and left the traffic police brigade with the driver who caused the accident.
"By the way, do you remember when the traffic accident happened? Which hospital did you go to for treatment? What happened after the traffic police arrived?" Wang Shen glanced at the driver who caused the accident sitting next to him and continued to ask questions while driving.
"Two weeks ago, on a Wednesday, at the city hospital." The driver's eyes remained fixed on the scenery outside the window, filled with despair and helplessness. "After the traffic police arrived, I asked her to come with us to the hospital for a checkup and to pay for it. She had no choice but to go with us. Unexpectedly, after the checkup, she tried to renege on the payment and even got into an argument with us in the hospital lobby," the driver continued.
"Around what time period did this happen? In the morning? Or in the afternoon?"
Around 10 a.m.
"What happened next? How did the traffic police handle and resolve the situation?"
"We settled it privately later, and she paid me 1,500 yuan."
Is this money in cash or...?
