Chapter 7 First Encounter with Pan the Mute

Yang Wanwan took some time to go to the market and sell the turtle that Pan the Mute had given her, earning thirty yuan.

Yang Wanwan knew she was selling them cheaply, but she didn't have time to go to the county town; she'd sell as many as she could. Everyone had been working incredibly hard these past few days, and the important thing was to use the money to buy pork to nourish everyone.

After returning home, he stewed and stir-fried the two pounds of pork belly he had bought, and sent Shang Tao to call Pan the Mute over for dinner.

This was the first time Yang Wanwan had seen Pan the Mute since her rebirth.

Pan the Mute looked thin and small, and although he was the same age as me, he was shorter than me.

His hair was rather long, obscuring his eyebrows and eyes. In the dim light, Yang Wanwan couldn't even see his face clearly.

He sat on the stool, silent.

However, he was very clean.

Although his clothes were worn and patched, and his hair was long, he was clean from head to toe.

Shang Tao took out his slingshot to show him, but he just looked at it without taking it or saying anything.

Shang Tao recounted the glorious deeds of using slingshots with great enthusiasm, while Pan the Mute listened silently.

Shang Tao served him a large bowl of rice, and Yang Wanwan put a lot of meat on his plate. Pan the mute didn't say anything, he just buried his head in his food.

A bowl of rice, done in a minute.

After wiping his mouth, Pan the Mute left without saying a word.

Shang Tao said, "Big sister, second sister, I just checked the clock, he was only at my house for a total of five minutes. If we hadn't rushed back, his mother would probably have beaten him!"

Futaba: "Oh, how pitiful!"

Two days later, Yang Wanwan bought some pork belly, wrapped it in lotus leaves, mixed it with salt, scallions, ginger, and garlic, and simmered it in the stove until cooked. She then filled a large bowl with rice and asked Shang Tao to deliver it to Pan Yaba, who was still working in the paddy fields at midday.

Shang Tao came back and said, "Big sister, you are so wise. Pan the mute's mother wouldn't let him go back for lunch, so she only had his younger brother bring him a small bowl of rice and a few pieces of pickled radish. When I went there, he was just opening the bowl to eat. Now that you have the stewed meat, he will definitely have a full meal."

Yang Wanwan had been thinking about it these past few days. The reason why Pan the Mute was sick in his previous life was nothing more than overwork and hunger.

Yang Wanwan couldn't change the fact that she was exhausted, but she could change the fact that she was hungry.

Pan the mute suffers from chronic malnutrition. If he could be given more good food, he wouldn't get sick.

So, with that thirty yuan, the three siblings and Pan the Mute enjoyed several more meat meals.

Yang Wanwan always prepared the meat dishes for Pan the mute in different ways. Sometimes it was stir-fried pork with chili peppers, and sometimes it was stir-fried pork with green beans. She always made sure they were delicious and then had Shang Tao deliver them to Pan the mute, who worked in the fields from morning till night.

I heard from Shang Tao that the day before yesterday, Pan the mute's mother stood with her hands on her hips and scolded him for a long time, saying that he was not careful when harvesting rice and shook a lot of rice into the water, otherwise he could have harvested an extra one or two hundred catties.

This is nothing more than nitpicking.

Yang Wanwan even doubted whether Pan the Mute was Liu Bamei's biological son, but Grandma Yang said he was. "He hardly speaks a few words all year round. Liu Bamei dislikes this son because he is stupid and can't bring her any honor."

Shang Tao said, "But Pan the mute has good grades. He's very smart, he just doesn't talk."

Shang Tao and Pan the Mute were in the same class.

Grandma Yang said, "No matter how good his grades are, he's fifteen and still hasn't graduated from elementary school. His family isn't well-off to begin with; the few rooms they live in now were built by Pan the Mute's grandfather when he was alive. Pan the Mute will probably have to go out to work and earn money after graduating from elementary school. He can't speak, he can't earn money, and it will be difficult for him to find a wife in the future. Liu Bamei will dislike him even more."

Such things are not uncommon in rural areas.

This mute Pan is strange. He's so busy during the double harvest season, I don't know how he manages his time, but he still managed to deliver things twice.

One time it was a little over a pound of small fish, and another time it was several pounds of snails and clams.

They would deliver the gifts and leave immediately. Yang Wanwan chased after them, but they had already disappeared without a trace.

After learning about his family situation, Yang Wanwan never mentioned it to Pan the mute's parents. Instead, she cleaned up the things Pan the mute brought and cooked them into a delicious meal for everyone to enjoy together.

Everyone is in dire need of nutrition at this time, and with such a heavy workload during the double harvest season, these things are just in time.

If it were delivered to his own home, Pan the Mute could at least have a full meal.

If he takes it back, he probably won't actually eat much of it.

Pan the mute's parents were lazy. While other adults were busy harvesting crops in the paddy fields, they didn't go to the fields. They just stayed at home doing chores and instructed their youngest son to deliver food to Pan the mute. After delivering the food, they would hurry back home to avoid being exposed to the sun.

Therefore, Pan the Mute's family didn't even notice the meals Yang Wanwan delivered to where he worked. As a result, for over a week, Pan the Mute ate plenty of oily and nutritious food.

The incident in the previous life where Pan the Mute was critically ill did not occur.

Yang Wanwan breathed a sigh of relief.

A week later, after finishing her chores at home, Yang Wanwan entrusted Shang Tao to her grandparents, boiled twenty eggs, made several rice balls wrapped in lotus leaves, filled two bottles with cooled boiled water using IV bottles, and boarded the train south with Cao Lili.

There are countless young girls of that age who go out to work, and people haven't heard much about human traffickers. With Aunt Wang, a relative of Cao Lili's family, making a solemn promise, the grandparents didn't think much of it and easily let Yang Wanwan and her sister go.

After boarding the train, Yang Wanwan was surprised to find that Pan the Mute had also come.

This was the second time Yang Wanwan had seen Pan the Mute since her rebirth.
