Li Ping and Chen Yan can only rely on each other for survival. In this strange and terrifying world, only their embrace can give each other a little comfort and warmth.
However, the screams pierced the dark night, piercing their eardrums time and time again.
These sounds seemed to be coming from the stairwell, some from upstairs or downstairs, but they could be heard throughout the entire building, making them increasingly terrified.
They didn't know what had happened, but one thing was certain: in this increasingly chaotic world, no one would knock on the door for no reason.
People who knock on the door for no reason are either looking to rob someone or want to do something bad.
Just as they were feeling uneasy, there was a sudden knock on the door. Li Ping and Chen Yan's hearts leaped into their throats. They looked at each other, their eyes filled with deep fear.
"Shh! Yan'er, don't make a sound, or we're doomed!" Li Ping shouted in a trembling voice.
There was no answer, but the knocking became more frequent and urgent.
Li Ping quietly approached the crack in the closed door and peered into the darkness outside through the electronic eye.
She couldn't see anyone, only the oppressive darkness outside.
Suddenly, a person covered in blood appeared at the door, knocking with all their might and weakly saying:
"Is anyone there? Please open the door and let me in, or they're going to beat me to death."
Chen Yan watched in horror, a chill running down her spine. "Mom, what... what should we do?" Her voice was filled with helplessness.
"Don't make a sound. We can't control this person. Have you forgotten what Dad told us? He told us not to open the door easily, or we'll get into trouble," Li Ping warned in a low voice.
"Mom, I understand." Chen Yan was startled by the screams outside as soon as she finished speaking.
"Ah... Don't kill me!"
"You beasts have robbed all my supplies and now you want to kill me. Do you have no conscience?"
"Hmph, what conscience do you have? I've disliked you for a long time. In these chaotic times, it's the perfect opportunity to get rid of you."
"No...no...can you kill me...no."
"Pfft..."
"ah…."
"Bang!"
"Hmph! You idiot, you always looked down on me, but it's no use knowing you were wrong now." With that, he left the crime scene.
“We have to make a decision.” Li Ping tried hard to control her emotions because there was now a dead body at their door.
As the footsteps faded into the distance, he continued, "That person is so ruthless; most robbers do bad things."
If we open the door, we'll end up like that person, maybe even a hundred times worse.
This place is becoming increasingly unsafe; we can't just sit here and wait to die.
Li Ping returned to her room and tremblingly picked up a kitchen knife from the kitchen. She knew it was just an insignificant weapon, but it was the only hope she could cling to.
“We have to leave here,” Li Ping decided. “We need to find a safer place.”
Chen Yan held her mother's hand tightly. "Mom, there are so many bad people outside, I'm scared."
"What if we leave and Dad comes back and can't find us?"
Tears welled in Li Ping's eyes as she choked out, "It's okay that your father... isn't here."
We'll be alright, I'll protect you.
They carefully stepped out of the room and onto the floor of the hallway.
In the darkness, they could hear their own heartbeats and feel the heavy, oppressive atmosphere around them.
They moved forward cautiously, trying to avoid any possible danger.
Countless times, they stopped, pressed themselves against the wall, and listened quietly to the sounds coming from afar.
"We must persevere," Li Ping told herself.
They finally reached the stairwell, but darkness and smog still shrouded everything.
Li Ping slowly descended the stairs, her hand tightly gripping the kitchen knife, ready to deal with any potential danger at any moment.
Suddenly, the two were startled by screams coming from the same floor.
"You beast, let me go!"
"Snap!"
A loud slap rang out.
"You filthy woman, you little slut!"
You always act high and mighty, looking down on us, don't you? Well, in this chaotic world, I'll show you how to look down on us.
If you don't serve us well today, we'll fuck you to death.
"Come and serve us right now, or you're dead."
"No... I don't want to, you disgusting men."
"Clap clap clap..."
"Ah... you dare hit me? I'll fight you to the death!"
"Brothers, what did you hear? This woman's going to fight us to the death, hahaha..."
"Why waste words with her? Just use force."
"Ah...no, what you're doing is illegal! I'm going to sue you beasts!" The sound of clothes being torn rang out, followed by various sounds that made people blush and their hearts race.
Li Ping quickly covered her daughter's ears to prevent her from hearing unpleasant sounds.
"Hahaha! The world is in complete chaos these days, and you still want to talk to me about the law? Even if we kill you in a moment, no one will come to collect your body."
You still expect others to save you? There are hundreds of millions of people who want the government to save them, but everyone is starving and freezing, barely able to take care of themselves. Go ahead and sue us!
"You'd better serve us obediently, so you don't suffer any more pain."
"That's right, you've been played by men before anyway, so you don't care about us guys."
"You beasts will die a horrible death."
Suddenly, a pungent smell hit her nose, and Li Ping realized it was the smell of a gas leak.
Her heart was racing; she knew the gas leak posed a deadly threat to them.
She quickly pulled Chen Yan back to room 1456 and stuffed the cracks in the door with a wet towel. Then, she found the window and tried to open it.
As fresh air filled the room, Li Ping and Chen Yan felt a sense of relief.
Suddenly, a blinding light pierced the darkness.
"Boom!"
A deafening sound rang out, like an explosion that had just occurred in the room. My ears were ringing, and I was almost knocked unconscious by the aftershocks.
Fortunately, that room was several rooms away from theirs, so it didn't affect their location; otherwise, they really wouldn't have any space to survive.
"Mom, where did the explosion happen? Will that woman be alright?"
After finally calming down, he heard his daughter's words and realized that all those people had been killed in the explosion.
The gas leak must have been intentional on the woman's part; otherwise, how could it have been such a coincidence?
“That sister should be alright. Yan’er, this place is too dangerous. We’ll wait for Dad for two days. If he doesn’t come back in two days, Mom will take you to the official shelter 60 kilometers away,” Li Ping said weakly.
