"Try it, maybe it still has some flavor." Junjue carefully put the meat in his mouth, chewed it a few times, and immediately felt a pungent, astringent taste.
Hmm! It tastes the same as always. Although it's not very tasty, it can fill your stomach and keep you from starving to death in a chaotic world with severe shortages of resources, right?
Junjue and Wan'er arrived at the official shelter's dining hall around six in the morning. People had gathered there early, waiting for their only meal of the day.
The food comes from the meat of mutated animals. This meat has a sour, foul smell and is difficult to chew. But in this post-apocalyptic world, people crave even a little bit of taste stimulation.
Junjue and Wan'er carried food trays, their eyes fixed on the darkness. The dining hall reeked of decay, and the food was arranged haphazardly.
The Duke wore a pained expression as he searched frantically for any food he could eat.
Wan'er's hands trembled as she held the food; the strong, pungent, sour smell made her afraid she might accidentally drop it on the ground.
Wan'er finally got Junjue to sit down and find something to eat. She took a small, careful bite.
The sour, bitter, and pungent taste spread in her mouth, leaving her speechless. Moreover, the meat was so tough that it was difficult to chew, making it absolutely awful.
In an instant, her face grew increasingly pale.
Her eyes became red and swollen, and tears streamed down her face from the irritation.
She grabbed a napkin, covered her mouth, and almost vomited on the spot.
Startled, Junjue quickly put down the food in his hand and asked anxiously, "Wan'er, what's wrong? Are you alright?"
Wan'er tried her best to calm herself down and said in a trembling voice, "My lord, this food is too awful, I really can't stand it anymore."
Junjue stood there, stunned, looking at Wan'er helplessly.
This was their first time in the shelter's mess hall, and he knew the food was so unpalatable that he wouldn't force his baby to eat it.
"Wan'er! Why don't you eat something else? Don't make yourself suffer, okay?"
His mouth was filled with a foul stench, and the sour and fishy smell of the food permeated the entire canteen.
"I...I want to try again. If you can eat it, I don't believe I can't!" Wan'er said through gritted teeth.
The others also began to notice Wan'er's unusual behavior. They stopped what they were doing and looked at her.
One man couldn't help but spit out a shooting star, which immediately drew a burst of laughter.
"Oh my! There are hundreds of thousands of people in the shelter eating, are you really that picky about not being able to eat?"
"Hahaha! Little girl, are you going to eat yours? If not, give it to us! Don't waste it!"
"Sigh! Another girl who hasn't experienced the harsh realities of war. When there's really no food left, she'll probably eat shit!"
"That's right. A while ago, when we had nothing to eat, the ground was completely bare, there wasn't even any grass to eat, we could only survive by drinking blood and urine!"
"Hey! At least we won't starve to death with this awful stuff! Everyone should be grateful!"
...
Faced with those mocking gazes, Wan'er felt a deep sense of helplessness.
Her cheeks burned. She knew those people were right; she had become increasingly pretentious since meeting Junjue.
She wanted to regain her composure, but no matter how hard she tried, everything in her throat and stomach was constantly fighting.
Seeing Wan'er's predicament, Junjue was filled with anger.
He strode forward and grabbed those who were mocking Wan'er.
He gritted his teeth and said fiercely, "What right do you have to laugh at her? Is she the only one who can't accept this kind of thing?"
Look at this canteen, there are quite a few people eating and vomiting right here.
She's already trying her best to adapt, so please don't cause trouble! Otherwise, I won't be polite.
The person who was grabbed felt the steel-like hand of the other person, as if he would be finished if the other person exerted any force, and apologized with a terrified expression:
"I'm...I'm sorry, big brother, I was wrong, I'll never do it again."
"Get out!" Junjue threw the man out and said coldly.
The person who was thrown several meters away was so frightened that he got up and fled in the dark in a panic, fearing that the other party would change their mind and he would lose his life.
After this incident, the canteen fell silent as people began to reflect on their behavior.
They stopped laughing, sat down silently, and quietly put the unpalatable food in their mouths.
Junjue walked to Wan'er's side, pulled her into his arms, and gently comforted her, "It's alright, Wan'er."
We will find better food to replace it and stop eating this awful stuff.
The tears finally stopped, and Wan'er looked at Junjue with emotion, her heart filled with gratitude and dependence.
Wan'er cautiously took another bite, but the expression on her face instantly became distorted and ugly. She tried to swallow it, but the sour and foul smell, along with the indescribable odor, made her unable to resist.
She clutched her mouth in pain, almost vomiting on the spot.
"Ugh...ugh...this...never mind, this is really too awful!" Wan'er said with difficulty, her voice hoarse and trembling.
Junjue felt a pang of heartache. He stared at the meat porridge on the table, took a deep breath, and continued chewing the meat, trying his best to bury the unpleasant taste deep in his heart.
I gently reached out and patted her back to make her more comfortable.
If Wan'er saw that the other person could eat such disgusting food with a blank expression, she would definitely admire them immensely. Unfortunately, the smog was too thick and she was destined not to see it.
"This is the only food they can get right now; they have no other choice."
