Chapter 9 Jealousy and Resentment

Xu Jiangming, Xu Haiguo, and Song Qiu'e all grew up in the countryside. They had never seen flush toilets like these before when they were young. Every household had a dry toilet at their door.

The excrement accumulated in dry toilets, after being continuously fermented using modern technology, becomes fertilizer for watering vegetable gardens and crops.

This is not only organic fertilizer, but it also doesn't smell bad, and the vegetables or grains grown from it taste better.

Xu Jiangming's suggestion was unanimously agreed upon by Xu Haiguo and his wife.

However, just in case, Xu Lai still went to the pet store and bought twenty large bags of cat litter, which she stored in her storage space.

Building a toilet requires bricks and cement, so I bought bricks, cement, ceramic tiles, and ceramic squat toilets.

After purchasing the materials, Xu Jiangming and his nephew Xu Haiguo were sent into the space by Xu Lai to start building the toilet.

To solve the problem of bathing in the apocalypse, the uncle and nephew decided to build a bathroom that combined the functions of a shower and a toilet.

However, flushing the toilet requires someone to manually carry water.

On the eighth day, Xu Jiangming and Xu Haiguo went to the space to finish the unfinished toilet part, while the others went to the seed shop to buy seeds.

Rice seeds, wheat seeds, soybeans, mung beans, black beans, and corn seeds.

There are also peanut seeds, rapeseed seeds, and various vegetable and fruit seeds that can be pressed for oil.

There are also cotton seeds and sugarcane seedlings.

Xu Jiangming, who loves farming, even went to a nursery to buy apple saplings, orange saplings, grape saplings, and loquat seeds.

Growing crops requires agricultural tools; relying solely on manual digging and harvesting is simply impractical.

So in the afternoon I went to the farm machinery store and bought five small plows. These weren't too expensive; you could buy one for a little over a thousand yuan.

There are also small rice and wheat combine harvesters, which are much more expensive, costing 35,000 yuan each.

We also bought five units for our home, keeping the extras as backups.

I also stocked up on three of each of the following: a household flour mill, a household rice mill, and an oil press.

These machines require diesel fuel, as do cars which require gasoline.

Due to the torrential rain disaster, I bought three kayaks and three inflatable boats, and stocked up on five sets of professional diving suits for men and women.

This cost nearly 350,000 yuan.

On the ninth day, it's time to stock up on some living creatures that can be kept in the space.

For example, chicks, ducklings, goslings, fish, shrimp, and crab seedlings.

The land area in the space is not large, and cattle and pigs eat a lot but grow slowly, so raising them is not practical.

So the family also decided on smaller sheep and rabbits.

There are two lambs, one male and one female; and four rabbits, two males and two females.

The sheep and rabbits grazed, and everyone went back to the seed shop and bought a large bag of pasture seeds.

Ducks and fish cannot live without water.

After discussing it, the family decided to dig a small pond in the space.

Xu Haiguo has worked on construction sites for decades and can operate machinery such as excavators.

So they rented an excavator and spent an afternoon digging a pond of about 70 or 80 square meters in the space.

A water pump is needed to add water to the pond.

As it was getting dark, the family drove to a large river in the suburbs and used a water pump to pump water from the river into a pond in the space.

If you're raising fish, shrimp, and crabs, wild water is definitely more conducive to their survival.

On the last day, the family went to the store again and bought a lot of plastic netting and sticks to make a fence.

Because that piece of land needs to be used to grow crops, vegetables, and fruits, as well as raise chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, and sheep.

We can't let these animals ruin the crops; we have to keep them in enclosures.

After buying these items, the family ordered some more things they had forgotten to buy before heading home before dark.

After ten days of stockpiling goods, Xu Lai's family had spent nearly five million yuan of their savings, leaving them with only three hundred thousand yuan.

These 300,000 units have been reserved.

During the outbreak of the virus and in the early stages of the torrential rain disaster, the world order was still functioning under the maintenance of national governments and militaries, and money was still available.

The family spent ten consecutive days running around stocking up on goods, and everyone was exhausted.

In the evening, everyone ate a quick dinner, then thoroughly disinfected the house before taking showers and going to bed early.

The next morning, the family members, who had rested all night, were full of energy.

Song Qiu'e specially braised beef and made a delicious bowl of beef noodles for breakfast.

In Song Qiu'e's words, "To face the next virus, you need to be in good health!"

Therefore, you should eat well at every meal!

After eating and drinking their fill, the family divided the work and sprayed disinfectant on the house again.

After the smell of disinfectant dissipated, Xu Lai and her younger brother Xu Chao closed all the doors and windows tightly, and then turned on the home's fresh air system.

"Didn't we stock up on dried mugwort? It's a good thing, Lai Lai. When you have time, take out the mugwort you've stored in your space. Second Uncle can also use the mugwort smoke to fumigate the house, just to be on the safe side!"

During the COVID-19 pandemic, some well-known traditional Chinese medicine practitioners suggested burning mugwort sticks at home to purify the air!

This was based on scientific evidence, and Xu Lai immediately agreed.

"Yes, Second Uncle!"

"Also, the space is a bit messy. We need to settle the chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, and sheep first! Otherwise, they might destroy all the vegetable seedlings and fish, shrimp, and crab seedlings!"

Seeing that his granddaughter agreed with his idea, Xu Jiangming was even happier and simply told her all his suggestions at once.

After hearing this, Xu Haiguo and his wife smiled and praised Xu Jiangming, saying, "Our second uncle is really amazing; he thinks of everything more thoroughly than we do!"

Chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, and sheep can ruin vegetable seedlings. Ducks and geese will also go to the pond to eat fish, shrimp, and crab seedlings.
