Chapter 138 The War Between Man and Rat

Countless monsters, glowing with faint red light, were silently closing in on that building from all three buildings of the Splendid Mansion.

In a short while, the dense, dark mass of things completely surrounded the first floor of the three buildings.

Those black blobs, bigger than cats, like well-trained soldiers, stopped moving after surrounding the four walls of the first floor. They simply stared at the creature, which was as big as a medium-sized dog, lying in the middle of the second floor with its red glowing eyes.

"Squeak~ Squeak~!"

The largest leader looked at the rat soldiers waiting for its orders, squeaked twice, and promptly issued the command.

Perhaps recalling how its offspring had been cruelly murdered by those six humans during the day, its eyes, larger than those of its kind, were filled with a furious red light.

Upon hearing the command, six teams of ten of the strongest mutated rats stealthily followed the familiar scent and surrounded the six apartments in the building.

Once these mutated rats found their destination, they all became excited.

They didn't make a sound, but quietly groped their way to the windows and doors of the six houses.

"Squeak!"

Two of the mutated rats touched the plastic mesh protective netting with their mouths, and immediately squawked at the other mutated rats.

The other rats in the group, like well-trained soldiers, rushed towards the window in the inner wall.

They opened their mouths wide, revealing sharp, knife-like teeth, and began to bite at the plastic mesh protective netting.

In just over ten seconds, the mutated rat had chewed through the fairly sturdy screen window.

In the living room, Wei Laoda, who had eaten and drunk his fill, was still fast asleep on the warm living room floor tiles when a mutated rat that had crawled in through a hole in the window screen pounced on him and bit his neck.

A few minutes later, the loud snoring suddenly stopped. Old Wei never imagined that he would end his short life in such a way.

The mutated rats, having tasted blood, seemed even more excited and thrilled.

Dozens of mutated rats swarmed towards the corpse on the floor once again.

Several tens of minutes later, the mutated rats, having eaten their fill, glanced at the gruesome corpses they had devoured, and without looking back, scurried out through the screen window they had entered through.

After the last mutated rat left, the swarms of mutated red poison ants that had been guarding the area began to move frantically toward the mangled corpse on the ground.

A few minutes later, the mutilated corpse on the ground was completely reduced to a skeleton.

Meanwhile, the same horrific scene unfolded in five other houses.

Having taken their revenge, the horde of mutated rats, now in a frenzy of hunger, led a dense swarm of mutated, poisonous red ants that had arrived from the wild to wreak havoc on the entire building.

"Squeak~ Squeak~"

Xu Lai was half asleep when she suddenly heard the squeaking of mice.

"Why does it sound like a mouse squeaking at this moment?"

The news that the government had repeatedly issued announcements recently, and that mutated rats had been discovered, popped into her head.

"Oh no!"

She sat up abruptly from her cot and turned on the rechargeable incandescent light bulb that was on the bedside table.

This attack had a significant impact. Through the light, Xu Lai saw that the windows of the air-conditioned room were covered with rats and mutated poisonous ants.

The mutated rats smelled the human scent inside, and when they couldn't bite the glass or the steel mesh, they went berserk and kept crashing into the steel mesh.

"Thump~ Thump~"

The sturdy steel protective netting thudded as it was rammed by the enormous mutated rat.

The noise woke up Grandpa Xu and the others who were sleeping on the bed in the air-conditioned room and on the floor.

When the indoor lights came on, the mutated rats began to squeal wildly at the people inside.

A single hair can affect the whole situation!

After the mutated rats on Xu Lai's side started screaming wildly, other places also started screaming.

Immediately, the piercing squeaking of rats echoed throughout the neighborhood.

After such a long period of natural disasters, even ordinary people have become very vigilant.

Upon hearing this eerie cry, everyone immediately got up, strained their ears to listen carefully to the source of the sound, and checked the doors and windows.

As a result, many people were still a step too slow.

Those homes still have screen windows, and those homes that have replaced their windows with stainless steel protective netting but still leave the stainless steel protective netting open to allow for indoor ventilation.

Some homes even had their steel security grilles and doors closed, but the wooden doors and window frames were still gnawed through by the mutated giant rat's hard teeth.

"These mutant rats are gnawing on steel security grilles and doors and windows!"

Xu Haiguo reacted quickly, spotting a dozen or so mutated rats gnawing on their balcony window. He yelled loudly as he grabbed a stun gun, turned on the voltage, and attached it to the steel protective netting.

As soon as this was done, the mutated rat attached to the diamond protective net was instantly electrocuted and fell off the net.

"Dad, you're amazing!"

Xu Lai, who had originally intended to force the windows shut, saw this, picked up her phone and made calls to the Xiao and Lu families respectively, then hurriedly grabbed her stun gun and went into another room.

Seeing this, the family members followed suit.

However, these mutated rats were incredibly persistent. After their companions suddenly fell out of the window, they rushed towards the steel protective netting one after another.

"They finally realized the danger and left!"

After several rounds of confrontation, the mutated rats, which had been at a disadvantage, suddenly scattered in all directions.

With sharp eyes, Xu Chao happily pointed at the fleeing mutated rat while holding an electric baton in one hand.

"Don't let your guard down, the mutated poisonous red ants are back!"

Xu Lai breathed a sigh of relief, but then saw the dense swarms of red mutant ants climbing up the steel protective netting again. She took another deep breath and reminded her family.

"Why are these mutated poisonous red ants back again?"

The memory of being attacked by a swarm of mutated red ants was still fresh in Song Qiu'e's mind, and now seeing these swarms of mutated poisonous insects again made her extremely nervous.

Although the steel protective netting kept the mutated red poison ants out, the red antennae of the ants managed to reach in through the small holes in the netting.

Unlike last time, the densely packed mutated red poison ants did not try to find holes to crawl into their homes.

This time, they opened their mouths one by one, attempting to corrode the steel protective mesh with their saliva.
