Xu's mother looked at her son, then at Bai Hongmei beside her, and said calmly, "This place is very nice, let's stay here."
Xu Fanyuan put the large suitcase on the ground and went back to carry the rest of the luggage. Bai Hongmei quickly found a cushion from the Xu family's luggage and placed it on the stone for Xu's mother, then helped Xu's mother sit down.
She wanted to go out again to help Xu Fanyuan carry his luggage, but Xu's mother smiled and said, "It's dark inside the cave, let Fanyuan go instead."
Bai Hongmei said in a soft, warm voice, "I can carry some small things. Please rest here." After saying that, she slowly walked towards the cave entrance like a little lamb.
As she walked, Bai Hongmei couldn't stop her tears from falling. It was her own willfulness that forced her father to insist that she leave Baijiazhuang in Sanjiazi Village only after she got married; otherwise, her father wouldn't have encountered deserters.
If it weren't for her stubborn insistence on marrying Liang Qi, her father would have taken her back to Longcheng long ago. Even if she didn't end up in the Bai residence, her father would have rented her a courtyard to live in outside.
And what about Grandma Songqi, who took care of me and my mother as we grew up? Is she gone too? Just thinking about this makes my heart ache like it's being ripped out, and I crouch down on the roadside in pain.
Xu Fanyuan, carrying a large bundle a meter high, walked towards Bai Hongmei.
Hearing footsteps, Bai Hongmei stood up, wiped her eyes, and gave a bitter smile, saying, "I was just about to help you carry your things back."
It was so dark in the cave that Xu Fanyuan didn't notice anything wrong with Bai Hongmei. He simply replied, "Okay, pick the lighter ones. I'll come back later."
The two passed each other. Bai Hongmei came to the oxcart, where a torch was stuck in the ground, illuminating the contents clearly. Xiaoyue looked around; there was no mounting stone beside the cart, not even a rock at her feet. She circled the cart once.
Seeing that her cotton robe had grown up to her calves and she couldn't move her legs, she was pacing anxiously when Xu Fanyuan came over. Seeing Bai Hongmei's anxious look, he understood what was wrong and said from behind, "What do you want? I'll hand it to you."
The warm voice stirred a surge of warmth in Bai Hongmei's heart. She glanced back at Xu Fanyuan; his hair was held back with a wooden hairpin, his face was like jade, and his slender features gave off a gentle aura.
To make it easier to work, he tucked a corner of his robe into a two-finger-wide blue belt embroidered with pine trees at his waist, and underneath he wore a pair of navy blue cotton trousers.
After glancing at Xu Fanyuan, he turned around and pointed to a small, long wooden box on the oxcart, saying, "That one."
Xu Fanyuan didn't think much of it. Standing next to Bai Hongmei, his arm was just long enough to reach the box, so he picked it up and casually placed it in Bai Hongmei's hand.
Bai Hongmei didn't expect the box to be so heavy. Once she held it in her hand, the weight made her let go, and the box, along with Bai Hongmei, fell into Xu Fanyuan's arms before falling to the ground.
To avoid falling, Bai Hongmei grabbed Xu Fanyuan's pants, but in doing so, she pulled too hard and ripped the loosely tied pants off. Xu Fanyuan quickly pulled up his pants, and Bai Hongmei, realizing what she was doing, let go and tried to get up, using the box that had fallen to the ground as a support.
Just as he stood up and looked up, he used too much force and his head hit Xu Fanyuan's genitals.
Xu Fanyuan let out a "howl" and bent over, one hand clutching his pants and the other covering his crotch. His painful bent-over posture bumped into Bai Hongmei's back as she was getting up.
The two were standing between the car and the cave wall, not even close to each other, when they collided and both fell to the ground, with Xu Fan on top of Bai Hongmei.
Bai Hongmei was pressing down on the box. Xu Fanyuan was the first to react. He grabbed his pants with one hand, covered his groin with the other, and with a push of his foot, he tumbled under the oxcart.
Bai Hongmei felt light and immediately got up, hurriedly apologizing to Xu Fanyuan: "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" She apologized repeatedly.
Xu Fanyuan's face turned green as he stood under the oxcart. He knew Bai Hongmei hadn't done it on purpose, but it really hurt.
He curled up under the car and waved one hand to indicate that he was alright.
Bai Hongmei saw him let go of his trousers, her face flushed, and she turned her back and said in a hoarse voice, "You should pull your trousers up first."
Xu Fanyuan rolled out from under the car, fastened his belt again, and leaned on the oxcart: "It was my oversight. Here's the heavy box back to you."
Bai Hongmei, her face flushed, said, "You pick one that's light and easy to carry, I'll take it back."
Xu Fanyuan thought for a moment, picked up a quilt and handed it to Bai Hongmei. Bai Hongmei took it and went back without even turning her head, following the path where they had settled on the house.
Xu Fanyuan also packed up the remaining items, placed them on the open rope, and carried them back. When they arrived, they saw Bai Hongmei unpacking the things she had brought back.
After hurriedly putting down his things, he said to Xu's mother, "I'm going to chop firewood," and then rushed out.
When they returned from chopping firewood, Bai Hongmei had already put everything away. Bai Hongmei was in charge of cooking, while Xu Fanyuan was in charge of starting the fire, using a cane to block up the front door, and then dividing one room into two.
After Village Chief Xu finished eating at home, it was Xu Fanyuan's turn to be on duty at the cave entrance. After two shifts, it was dawn. Li Lei got up early, chopped firewood, put the firewood next to Old Lady Ge's room, and then went to the cave entrance to be on duty.
As the sun rose, Li Lei left the campfire and searched around outside the cave entrance. Suddenly, he discovered a group of people on the outer edge of the swamp at the foot of the mountain.
She quickly ran into the cave, grabbed a basin, and started banging on it. The banging was rapid and loud. Lu Xiaomei ran towards the cave entrance. When she heard the sound, Li Qianqian ran over. Only Grandma Ge, Ge Daming, Xiaodouding, and Shuiyue were left in the house.
