Chapter 17 This door is just for show

The next day, before dawn, Xiaoyue went into the mountains alone.

Xiaoyue originally wanted to find some wild vegetables and mushrooms, but it was already July, and the wild vegetables were no longer fresh. Xiaoyue passed by Xiao Ma Hu Tou, where there was a stream between Xiao Ma Hu Tou and Da Ma Hu Tou.

Xiaoyue started searching along the woods above the stream. At first, she picked a handful of wood ear mushrooms, then three or five pine mushrooms. With her basket on her back, it was almost noon. Xiaoyue had only eaten a monkey head mushroom the night before, and hadn't eaten anything this morning.

Xiaoyue was anxious about whether to go back. The house was almost ready, and they were just waiting for it to get colder so they could apply a layer of plaster to the walls. They needed to find a professional to cover the roof properly, as Xiaoyue couldn't do it properly at all.

Xiaoyue thought that tomorrow was market day, and she should at least get something to sell at the market, otherwise she really couldn't do much with just over two taels of silver.

The wormwood around her feet was very tall. Xiaoyue pushed the wormwood aside, and suddenly there was a snake as thick as a thumb in front of her.

Xiaoyue had always been afraid of mollusks, and now she was even more afraid to go any further, so she quietly walked up the mountain.

As the snake gradually slithered away, Xiaoyue looked towards its location. There was a large, fallen tree there, almost as tall as Xiaoyue. She went around to the back of the tree and suddenly saw something red.

Xiaoyue crouched down to examine it closely and discovered that it was a red Ganoderma lucidum. Moreover, there were eight large Ganoderma lucidum growing on the fallen tree, none of which had white edges, and there was a layer of spore powder on them.

The three small Ganoderma lucidum mushrooms below, each about the size of a little finger, have only one red section, about the size of a little fingertip, while the rest have white edges.

Xiaoyue didn't dare to make any big noise, afraid that the big snake would come back. She put down her basket, took a sickle, and carefully supported the back of the Ganoderma lucidum. She gently cut along the bark and picked it. She held it with one hand and picked large leaves from the vicinity where she found the Ganoderma lucidum. She placed them at the bottom of the basket, picking one and then layering them. In the end, she filled half a basket.

Xiaoyue looked at the sky, wondering what to do with the things she had gathered. She was currently at Da Ma Hu Tou, and after walking three miles down the mountain, she would reach the Chen family's manor. She could go there and ask Yun Xingfei for help.

But then she thought, why should anyone help her? They're not related by blood. Besides, the thought of Yun San sent chills down Xiaoyue's spine.

Forget it, Xiaoyue should just go to sleep and go home.

It was already dark when they arrived in the village, and Xiaoyue's new house was still empty and unfinished.

Xiaoyue carried the basket on her back and placed the contents on the bed. She then lit a fire outside and threw the potatoes she had taken from Lao Ge's house that day into the fire.

Xiaoyue started making the gate again using yesterday's firewood. She placed the same-thickness wooden sticks on two main sticks that were 1.5 meters long and three sticks that were 1.8 meters long, and tied them together with hemp bark. Then she filled in sections of wooden sticks that were about one meter long.

Then, use willow branches to weave across the entire front door.

The gate was installed, and the potatoes in the fire were ready. Xiaoyue dug out the potatoes, hissing from the heat, and ate them all.

After Xiaoyue finished eating the potatoes, she thought about making a curtain to put the Ganoderma lucidum in. Otherwise, the Ganoderma lucidum would take up all the space on the bed, and where would she sleep?

Without hesitation, Xiaoyue gathered the wooden sticks she had whittled off when repairing the house. She used two sticks, each over a meter long, as the base, and a stick an arm's length long as the top, and tied two curtains together one by one with hemp fibers.

Xiaoyue placed the Ganoderma lucidum on the newly woven curtain, then thought she would go to the toilet and come back to sleep.

After Xiaoyue finished using the toilet, she took a stroll around her own yard. Now that it was her home, she went to check on the gate again.

Suddenly, in the night, I saw a figure with tattered clothes staggering towards the gate.

Xiaoyue hurried a few steps and quickly blocked the door from the inside. The door was just for show, and it was made of thin wood, which could not withstand the man's pounce at all.

The man leaned against the door and slowly squatted down, throwing away the stick that was supporting him. He held his head in his hands, looking like he was in great pain.

Her hair was disheveled, as if she hadn't washed it for days, and her clothes were tattered and smelled bad. She was holding a stick that was lying to the side, as if she had come from the other side of the mountain. Xiaoyue gently opened the door, thinking to herself, "I have nothing here either."

There is water, but there is a river right next to the mountain when we came down, so we shouldn't be thirsty. Besides, there are so many villages nearby, where did they come from?

Xiaoyue gently tried to kick the person with her foot, but he was too dark to see his face.

Xiaoyue squatted down again, nudged the man's shoulder, and said, "I don't have anything here either. I just finished eating the three potatoes. If you had come a little earlier, I would have given them to you."

At this moment, Xiaoyue saw that the person had raised his head, and by the moonlight, she could see that he had an Adam's apple and was a man.

"Water, water," the man croaked, swallowing repeatedly as if he desperately needed water.

Xiaoyue only had water left, so she hurriedly ran home, took down the gourd hanging on the wall, and went to the door. The man was already leaning against the doorpost and sitting on the ground. Xiaoyue handed him the gourd. The man's hand seemed to be injured as well, and his hand was covered in blood and flesh.

Xiaoyue uncorked the bottle, intending to feed the man water.

The man finally mustered all his strength to grab the gourd and drink from it.

The gourd was full of water, but the man didn't get a single drop to drink.

After drinking the water, the man regained some strength, grabbed Xiaoyue's sleeve, and uttered two words with difficulty: "Uncle Liang."

She fainted again.

Xiaoyue shook the man and asked, "Are you asking me to go find Uncle Liang for you? Or..."

"What bad luck! I finally get to go to bed a day early, but this guy shows up. He can't even speak properly and he even fainted." Xiaoyue muttered to herself. But she couldn't just ignore him. What if he died on her doorstep? That would be so unlucky.

Xiaoyue had a million curses running through her mind, but there was nothing she could do about it.

They took out the remaining curtains and pulled the man down onto them right next to the door.

Xiaoyue looked at the gate she had built and thought she shouldn't have done it. Without a gate, no man would come. She muttered to herself as she ran toward Uncle Liang's house at the east end of the village. She knew where Uncle Liang lived from her previous life.

Just as they arrived at the Ge family's gate, they saw a dark figure climbing over the west courtyard wall. Xiaoyue glanced at it and knew it must be Ge Erlin. When Ge Erlin's family returned, her sister-in-law's family must have returned as well.

Xiaoyue didn't have time to think much. When she arrived at Uncle Liang's house, she banged on the door frantically, and the dogs in the yard barked incessantly.

Perhaps he had woken up Uncle Liang who was sleeping, because he opened the door while cursing.

Just as he was about to start cursing again, seeing that the person was a stranger, Uncle Liang swallowed his anger.

Before Uncle Liang could speak, Xiaoyue said, "Uncle Liang, there's someone lying at my door, insisting on seeing you."

"You want to see me." Uncle Liang frowned and straightened the clothes he was wearing.

"Yes, after I fed him water, he called out 'Uncle Liang' and then fainted." He hasn't woken up yet.

"Come with me quickly and take a look." Xiaoyue hurriedly threw away the hot potato.

"Alright, I'll hitch up the cart first. Do you think either of us can handle a young man?" Uncle Liang then closed the gate.

After waiting a while, Uncle Liang hitched up his cart and came out. Xiaoyue got into the cart, and the two headed towards Xiaoyue's house.
