Chapter 7: The Fight Was Intense

With her basket on her back, she headed towards Old Ge's house. Once inside the yard, Old Madam Ge looked at the pig feed in the basket but didn't get angry. She instead told Xiaoyue to feed the pigs in the backyard.

In the past, when we came back from gathering pig feed, there would be a cutting board outside the pigpen with a chipped cleaver on it. We would use the cleaver to chop up the lamb's quarters and plantain, mix them with wheat bran, and then add them to the pig feed trough.

Xiaoyue ignored everything else this time and just grabbed handfuls of vegetables from her basket and put them into the pigsty.

Then Xiaoyue took out the sheets, blankets, and clothes she had washed and made the quilt and blankets all by herself.

Upon seeing this, Lu Xiaomei gave Xiaoyue a grateful smile.

After Xiaoyue finished sewing the quilt cover, she immediately brewed medicine for Lu Xiaomei.

He personally supervised Lu Xiaomei as she ate the medicine he had prepared.

Dinner will be ready by now.

Second Sister-in-law, Xiao Sun, was the second daughter of Old Madam Ge's maternal uncle's family, so she often stayed in Old Madam Ge's room. Xiao Sun saw Xiao Yue brewing medicine in the west wing.

He then said to Old Madam Ge, "Mother, do you think Xiaoyue is capable? Why don't we let her cut the pig feed? We still have another pig at home, and the pig feed that Second Brother cuts is too old."

The pig won't eat it; my pig has gotten noticeably thinner since we caught it.

Grandma Sun smiled and glanced at her second son's wife: "Alright, we can't let Xiaoyue eat our food for nothing and not do anything."

The three of them sat on the kang (a heated brick bed). Old Ge was smoking on the kang. The meal was ready, but no one who didn't live on the roof came to set the table to eat. Fortunately, Xiaoyue had worked today, so it wasn't a free meal.

When they got to the kitchen, they filled a meal for three people, brought back a small bowl of vegetables, set up a small dining table on the kang (heated brick bed), and the three of them ate their meals by themselves.

Then, Old Mrs. Ge started cursing again in the yard, calling her a vixen and a little slut. She would change the names to two, but Xiaoyue ignored her and continued eating and drinking as usual.

In the morning, Grandma Ge upgraded her pig feed cutting chores again, now she has to do one basketful at noon and another basketful in the evening.

Xiaoyue didn't say anything, but brewed the medicine for Lu Xiaomei and then got a lunchbox from the kitchen.

They entered Xiaoma Hutou Mountain. The man had already left. Xiaoyue, carrying a basket on her back, leisurely cut pig feed and wandered around the mountain.

See if there are any mushrooms, good wild vegetables, or wild fruits.

In the afternoon, Xiaoyue finally started cutting pig feed, carrying back a whole basket on her back.

Grandma Ge was furious. "I only cut a basketful, and I have no dinner to eat tonight."

Xiaoyue ignored Grandma Ge's words and directly prepared the meal for the three of them, taking it to the west wing to eat.

The next day, Xiaoyue returned home in the evening and found the kitchen door locked. She then took the basket of pig feed from her back to Village Chief Xu's house. "Village Chief Xu," she said, "I've brought you this basket of pig feed."

Ask the village chief when the land for that house will be ready.

Village Chief Xu looked at Xiaoyue and shook his head with a smile: The contract that Xiaoyue signed with Ge Sanlin was guaranteed by Village Chief Xu.

"Girl, you're in too much of a hurry. If it were a boy, it would be easier to arrange his marriage. But you're a girl, and the higher-ups are still considering it. Don't rush."

Xiaoyue returned to Lao Ge's house with an empty basket on her back. There was no food, but medicine needed to be brewed. Xiaoyue sat on a small stool to brew the medicine.

Grandma Ge was furious that Xiaoyue would give away the grass she had obtained. She smashed things in a fit of anger, breaking the pestle used to pound the soy sauce jar.

The next day, Xiaoyue got up and did nothing but carry a basket on her back to take an oxcart to the market. When she arrived at the grain store, she bought ten catties of millet and then bought six steamed buns on the street.

Xiaoyue hadn't been to town much in her previous life. She only asked Uncle Liang where to buy rice, so she came to buy some. Afterwards, she ate two steamed buns herself and gave two to Lu Xiaomei and Xiaodouding each.

After returning, Xiaoyue took out the steamed buns, put the rice in the cupboard, and then went up the mountain to pick wild vegetables with her basket on her back.

Grandma Ge assumed Xiaoyue had gone to cut pig feed, but when she returned with her basket, not a single blade of grass was to be seen.

I filled a basket to the brim with cassava, along with a small amount of wood ear mushrooms, and picked some wild celery and millet.

When Xiaoyue got home, she took a cassava, washed it, and cooked it.

They also picked and washed the wild celery and wild millet.

Under Lu Xiaomei's guidance, rice was cooked, cassava and wild porridge were made into soup, and wild celery was prepared for the next day.

Ge Erping's injuries have healed, and Lu Xiaomei's illness is not so serious anymore; she can even walk on the ground from time to time.

Everything is going well, and Xiaoyue is happy to go dig for wild vegetables every day. Today she dug up some small garlic cloves, which she mixed with the wild celery to add some flavor.

Xiaoyue picked a basketful of wild celery and plans to go to the market tomorrow to see if she can sell it.

When Xiaoyue returned to the west wing that evening, she found Xiaodouding wiping away tears and crying.

Xiaoyue put down her basket, picked up the little boy, and pointed towards the kitchen. "Aunt Xiaoyue, Auntie stole our cassava."

Xiaoyue looked around the room and confirmed that the cassava was gone. She comforted the little boy and then turned and went out into the kitchen.

Hearing the noise, Ge Erping pushed open the door, looking aggressive, and grabbed Xiaoyue by the collar.

Xiaoyue was lifted up and spun around. She then picked up a shovel from the side of the kitchen and started swinging it at Ge Erping without a care, not even looking at his head or buttocks.

Just as the two were locked in a fierce fight, a man entered through the front door, leaning on a wooden stick.

Looking out the window, Grandma Ge saw that the man was quite handsome and was wearing a long gown. You know, only people who could wear a long gown were well-off or were scholars with status.

The man pushed open the door, entered the courtyard, but didn't go any further. He simply stood at the gate and asked, "Is anyone home?"
