Liang Qi was completely unprepared for Xiaoyue's move. He was stunned for a moment, then hugged Xiaoyue tightly. Even through her thick clothes, Xiaoyue could feel Liang Qi's burning embrace.
Liang Qi affectionately placed his face in the crook of Xiaoyue's neck and kissed her several times with a slightly heavy, cloying breath. The heat from Xiaoyue's neck quickly spread to her face.
Under Liang Qi's restraint, Xiao Yue cautiously pushed him. At first, Liang Qi didn't move, but hugged Xiao Yue even tighter. Xiao Yue whispered in his ear, "Where are the children in the yard?"
Although Xiaoyue's breath lightly brushed against Liang Qi's ear, that faint breath made Liang Qi's heart pound like a pounding rabbit's.
Finally, Liang Qi let out a long breath, calmed himself, and reluctantly let go of Xiaoyue.
Xiaoyue gazed into Liang Qi's deep-set eyes, and as he looked at her with deep emotion, his lake-blue pupils sparkled with tiny glimmers of light.
Xiaoyue touched Liang Qi's right eyebrow. The eyebrow was broken off little by little to the right of the pupil, a knife wound that went through it. Xiaoyue stroked the broken eyebrow with a feeling of tenderness.
Liang Qi gradually eased the awkwardness of their reluctant parting, pinched Xiaoyue's soft, flushed cheeks, and coaxed her in a voice full of masculine affection, saying...
"Don't treat me like a submissive wife. My mother is very strong-willed, even more so than you. So, whatever you want to do, just tell me. I'll always be there for you."
Xiaoyue pulled Liang Qi's hand down, squeezed it tightly, then playfully jumped aside, took out five taels of silver from her pocket, and handed it to Liang Qi.
Liang Qi held Xiaoyue's hand, turned back and kissed her again reluctantly before letting go of her, turning around and leaving the house, heading towards the Gao family.
After seeing Liang Qi off, Xiaoyue went to the main room. Yang Xu and Xiao Douding were playing on the kang in the east room, and Shuiyue was making clothes with Ge Liuzhi. Xiaoyue also picked up Chunyue's clothes and went to the east room to sit down next to Lu Xiaomei. She chatted with Lu Xiaomei while making clothes.
As evening approached, Xiaoyue peeked through the window paper and saw Li Lei carrying a large bundle of firewood into the courtyard. Xiaoyue realized that the firewood she had stored for the winter was not enough, so she quickly put down what she was doing and helped Li Lei pile the firewood under the gable wall in the front yard.
Xiaoyue, panting, followed Li Lei into the house in the front yard: "Can you stay here tonight?"
Li Lei swished the snow off his feet and said casually, "Yes, the snow on the walls and the ceiling is dry, and the snow on the kang (heated brick bed) is dry too."
Seeing that Li Lei and Chun Yue were able to move over, Xiao Yue said, "Then move your luggage over. I've asked Liang Qi to order a cabinet. There will be a kang cabinet in your room. I know you're capable, but please don't bully Chun Yue."
Li Lei responded without saying anything and went straight out of the room to move his luggage. When he left the bedroom, Xiaoyue saw the broken pot that Gao Lei had brought over in the kitchen and couldn't help but sigh. They still had to buy a kettle.
Xiaoyue returned to the main room and entered the east room. She saw Lu Xiaomei sitting up again, starting to gather the scraps of cloth from the bag. Seeing that Lu Xiaomei couldn't stay still, Xiaoyue sat down beside her and said, "I have six sewn shoe soles here. After you recover, make them into shoes for me. Keep the ones you can wear, and sell the ones you can't. There are shoes for both men and women."
"I still need to make a few more pairs of shoes for Shuiyue and Chunyue, and also for Xiaodouding." After saying this, Xiaoyue comforted Lu Xiaomei by covering her with a blanket, and said to Xiaodouding, "Watch over your mother, don't let her do any more work, the most important thing is for her to take good care of her health."
Lu Xiaomei said, "I feel much better. You don't know, when I heard that Ge Sanlin and Da Lingzi were having an affair, I argued with Ge Sanlin, and he hit me. I couldn't get over it, and I cried all night. I was so angry and upset that I didn't eat or take care of the children."
Finally, she really got sick. By the time I wanted to take care of the children and cook again, I was so angry I couldn't even get out of bed." Xiaoyue patted her shoulder, her eyes filled with deep regret. Then Lu Xiaomei continued:
"The first time you came to see me, all I felt was regret for what you said. But I was too ashamed to face you, so I ignored you." He sighed, grasping Xiaoyue's hand.
"You saved my life. I will listen to you from now on. Everything you say is right."
Xiaoyue smiled and took Lu Xiaomei's hand, saying, "Your health is getting better every day. You still have a long way to go before you start working. Let's get this straight: for the first few months of your work, you'll have to pay back the money you paid for your medicine."
Lu Xiaomei smiled, a happy and carefree smile, as if the knot in her heart had been untied: "Okay, I'll earn wages like Li Qianqian."
"Sure."
...
The Ge family's courtyard was also in an uproar. This morning, Old Madam Ge, along with her second son Ge Erlin and third son Ge Sanlin, along with Ge Erping, her sister-in-law Xiao Sunshi, and Old Man Ge, drove an oxcart to the coffin shop to meet their in-laws and set a date.
As soon as Ge Erping entered the coffin shop, his lost soul returned. He didn't even enter the coffin shop; he ran out on his own and eventually got into Uncle Liang's car and went home.
The group was caught in a dilemma, unsure whether to go in or not. Finally, they said to the matchmaker, Madam Sun, "Give us back the money we owed for the betrothal gifts."
Little Sun could only say, "Let's go home and discuss it," thus smoothing things over. When the group got home in the oxcart, they found Ge Erping sitting angrily on the kang (heated brick bed).
When Grandma Ge saw that Ge Erping had recovered from his illness, she was both happy and angry. She was happy that he had recovered from his illness after several months, but she was angry because the coffin shop had given her a dowry of fifty taels of silver, and now that Ge Erping had returned, they wanted to return the dowry, but she couldn't afford it herself.
