Gao Lei's anger flared up immediately upon hearing this, "What do you mean by crossing the line? It's clearly..."
He stopped abruptly, unsure how to continue. He scratched his head, looked at Xiaoyue, and said with an awkward smile, "Let's talk about it after the autumn examination. I'll take you back now."
Seeing that Ge Erlin had already run away in a sorry state, Xiaoyue was no longer afraid. As she approached Gao Lei's door, she smiled and turned back to Gao Lei, saying, "You're home now. I can walk by myself. I'm not afraid."
Gao Lei ignored Xiaoyue's pleas to stop him from seeing her off and insisted on doing so until he reached the village entrance where he met Liang Qi.
Xiaoyue's eyes lit up when she saw Liang Qi. Although she wasn't sure if Liang Qi was there to pick her up, she had an excuse not to let Gao Lei take her, so she said, "The person who's here to pick me up is here."
Xiaoyue's words were thoughtless, so Gao Lei naturally got angry again and said sarcastically, "So you've changed to another one."
Hearing this, Xiaoyue thought to herself, "Here we go again." She didn't want to get entangled with Gao Lei, so she simply said, "Thank you for giving me a ride."
Ignoring Gao Lei who was standing there dumbfounded, he walked towards Liang Qi.
"I was worried something might have happened to you, so I wanted to come and greet you. Who brought you here?"
"Gao Lei, Gao Yu's older brother."
"Oh, he's got the makings of a scholar."
As they walked home, they ignored the gloomy expression on Gao Lei's face as he stood at the village entrance.
...
Upon reaching the courtyard, Xiaoyue went into the main room first and found Lu Xiaomei still lying on the kang (a heated brick bed), but her complexion was much better. Xiaoyue quickly prepared the meal, serving her a little of each dish.
We slowly fed Lu Xiaomei, but she only ate a few bites before waving her hand and saying she couldn't eat anymore.
Xiaoyue served the little boy his meal and then went to the shack. She saw Liang Qi, Yun San, Yun Ba, and Yun Xingfei sitting on the kang (heated brick bed) inside the shack.
Yun San was the most seriously injured. Xiao Yue leaned forward and glanced at Yun San. Looking at Yun Ba leaning against a small bundle of firewood, she asked, "Should we ask Doctor Hu to take a look at Yun San?"
Yun Ba gently shook his head. "The doctors here can't treat internal injuries. Besides, the fewer people who know about it in your home, the safer it is for you."
Xiaoyue glanced at Liang Qi and smiled, "You're the one who got the firewood for Yun Ba, aren't you?"
Liang Qi smiled and nodded.
"Did you give Yun San his medicine?" Xiao Yue asked again, noticing Yun Ba's expression as he looked at Liang Qi.
Liang Qi nodded again: "The medicine my mother gave me when I was on the battlefield."
Xiaoyue approached Yun San and touched his forehead. It was still a little hot. His face was pale, his eyes were tightly closed, and he was clenching his teeth and not making a sound.
Looking around at the four people, all of them were dressed in wrinkled clothes, covered in leaves and mud, and were not clean at all.
Xiaoyue added some firewood to the kitchen in the shack, then went to the kitchen in the main house to get food for the four of them. She put all the food on a small table and brought it into the shack.
Yun Xingfei hadn't eaten properly all day. When he saw food, he stopped pretending to be a young master, picked up a bowl, filled it with rice, and started shoveling it into his mouth without caring about anyone else.
Xiaoyue picked up a bowl, added some vegetables, mixed them together, and handed it to Yunba. Yunba was leaning against the bundle of firewood, and because of his stomach injury, he couldn't move, so Xiaoyue brought the food to him.
She served Liang Qi another bowl, saying, "It was made by my third sister-in-law. Her cooking is delicious. It's so late and there's nothing to eat. Have a bite." Liang Qi reached out and took the bowl.
Finally, it was Yun San's turn. Xiao Yue saw that Yun San couldn't open his eyes, so she remembered the porridge that Lu Xiaomei had made that morning. She went back to the room, heated up the porridge, and brought it to Yun San. She fed him spoonful by spoonful with a small spoon. At first, Yun San didn't open his mouth.
Once the porridge was in his mouth, Yun San tasted the rice and started asking for more.
Xiaoyue made arrangements for everyone, and Doctor Hu also arrived. When Xiaoyue arrived at the courtyard gate, she opened the gate and led Doctor Hu to the west room to take Third Sister-in-law's pulse.
While taking the patient's pulse, Physician Hu muttered to himself, "The pulse at the right Guan position is strong and yin. The patient has a bitter taste in his mouth, poor appetite, abdominal distension, and is restless and unable to sleep..."
After taking her pulse, he wrote down a prescription: 8 liang of Pinellia ternata, 3 liang of Citrus aurantium, 3 liang of Gardenia jasminoides, 3 liang of Poria cocos, Glauber's salt... and another string of medicinal herbs. Then he handed the prescription to Xiaoyue and said, "Take this medicine for seven days. After seven days, I will come back to take your pulse and see if you need to take the medicine again."
"Doctor Hu, please prescribe two more days' worth of medicine for typhoid fever. I still feel a bit dizzy," Xiaoyue said to Doctor Hu after receiving the prescription.
Without hesitation, Doctor Hu took out some paper and prescribed two doses of medicine for Xiaoyue, instructing her, "Once you're better, you won't need to take any more medicine; all medicine has some toxicity."
Xiaoyue readily agreed, and then said, "Please add another medicine pot for me. I want my third sister-in-law to have a special medicine pot for brewing medicine."
Xiaoyue followed Doctor Hu to his home to get the medicine, plus a medicine pot, which cost a total of four hundred coins.
When Xiaoyue returned, she saw Liang Qi waiting for her at the big well in the village. After seeing Liang Qi, Xiaoyue was no longer apprehensive and happily ran to him. The two of them went back to Xiaoyue's house together.
When they got home, there were two medicine pots. One pot was for brewing medicine for Lu Xiaomei, and the other pot was for brewing medicine for Yun San's cold.
First, I gave Lu Xiaomei her medicine. After she finished drinking it and I watched her lie down and fall asleep with Xiaodouding, I brought the cold medicine to the front yard.
Carrying the medicine she had prepared for Yun San, she entered the house and asked Yun Xingfei to help Yun San up. After giving Yun San the medicine, she put him down and looked at Xiaoyue's unusually hesitant expression, unsure of what to say.
Xiaoyue glanced at Yun Xingfei, guessing that Yun Xingfei had something to say but was hesitant to speak. She had never seen Yun Xingfei like this before, so Xiaoyue continued, "Go to sleep quietly and don't cause trouble. We'll talk about it when you guys are all better." Xiaoyue and Liang Qi left the room together and propped up the door.
