People were really honest back then. You had to be persuaded to rent a place if you wanted to. Try it now, and you'd never get a place in such a prime location. Everyone worked for the railways, so they were guaranteed a stable income. I wouldn't say they were well off, but they could easily support a family of three or four, and if you were careful, you could save a bit. So, few people considered starting a small business to make money. They felt embarrassed, and they were used to a comfortable life, so they didn't have the drive to make money.
"Lao Zhou, thank you. Come to my house for a drink tonight. We haven't sat together for a long time." Lao Du and Lao Zhou talked as they walked out of the office.
"I'll go drink after you're done. You take care of this first. Why, do you really want to rent it?"
"Yeah, I have that idea. Mainly because my wife wants to do something to help with the family expenses. You said that going out is nothing more than selling goods or cleaning, there are no good jobs, so it would be better to open my own shop."
"Then you think about it. I've never done business before, so I can't give you any advice." Lao Zhou said while smoking.
"This isn't my first time. Do you think the rent can be cheaper?" Du Chen's father thought for a while and asked.
"I think so. They are all government-owned houses, so the rent won't matter. Our unit has too many houses that we can't rent out, and we don't make money from them. If not, you can give Lao Zhang some benefits. I don't think I'll take the money, but just buy him some things. I don't think it will be a big problem." Lao Zhou analyzed.
"Okay, if not, buy him two packs of cigarettes and two bottles of wine."
"Well, that's enough. If there's nothing else, I'll go back and do my work. We'll have a drink together when you finish these things. You can go and do your work too." Lao Zhou said.
After saying goodbye to Lao Zhou, Du Chen's father did not return to the unit, but went straight home. Taking advantage of the fact that he was not busy today, he planned to have a good discussion with Du Chen's mother.
"Wife, I'm back."
"You came back so early today? Is everything okay at work?" Du Chen's mother said in surprise.
"I went to work this morning, but since it wasn't busy, I ran out and went to find Lao Zhou to ask about the store at the school gate."
"So how did the question go?"
"It's the building construction section. Two hundred a month. I think I can negotiate a better price."
Du Chen's father was a little thirsty after running all morning. He picked up the water cup on the table and took a big gulp. Then he told Du Chen's mother all the news he had found out in the morning.
After a long discussion, Du Chen's mother decided to go to the school gate that afternoon to take a look around and get a feel for the place. They also planned to go to the city's small commodity market on Sunday to check out the prices before deciding whether to rent the place.
Du Chen didn't ask his parents what they thought about the stationery store today. After all, it was not a small matter for their family, and it was normal to think about it for a day or two.
For extracurricular activities after two classes in the afternoon, Du Chen and his classmates went to the playground. There were parallel bars and parallel bars on the playground. Du Chen liked to stay there whenever he had time to exercise.
Du Chen was doing pull-ups when a few senior students came over from a distance. Du Chen knew that they were famous hooligans in the school, from the fifth grade. The leader was called Hao Bing, whose surname sounded nice but he was not a very good person. The others were probably classmates, whom Du Chen did not know.
Du Chen didn't care when he saw them coming over, because he had never had any intersection with them in his two lives, so he didn't think they were coming to find him.
"Hey, are you that Du Chen?"
Du Chen didn't expect Hao Bing to walk directly up to him and ask. Judging from the situation, it was probably not a good thing.
"Yes, that's me. Is there something wrong?" Although Du Chen was not afraid of them, he didn't want to cause trouble, so his tone was still polite.
"I heard you're pretty good, and you've even published an article. You must have made a lot of money."
As soon as Du Chen heard this, he knew what was going on.
"What's the matter? What does it have to do with you?" Du Chen's tone also became rude.
"Oh, you're pretty tough. You want to get beaten, right? Give me twenty dollars now and I'll let you go. Do you understand?" Hao Bing said viciously to Du Chen, who was a head shorter than him.
"Come on, try to touch me. If you want money, go ask your mother. Otherwise, call me dad and I will give you twenty." Du Chen said contemptuously.
Du Chen was itching to fight. After so many years of rebirth, he'd been exercising every day. Just when this Sand Dollar provoked him, Du Chen wanted to fight and see what he could do. At worst, if he couldn't win, he could always run. Du Chen was confident in his ability to escape, as running was his main exercise.
"Fuck you!"
Hao Bing was immediately enraged when he heard Du Chen's words and reached out to slap him. Du Chen had been on guard for a long time. Seeing him raise his right hand, he immediately raised his left arm to block it, and at the same time, he threw a straight punch to Hao Bing's left eye with his right hand. Hao Bing screamed and covered his eyes with both hands. Du Chen took advantage of the situation and attacked Hao Bing's cheek with a tortoise punch, while simultaneously driving his right knee into Hao Bing's stomach. The whole set of moves was so smooth that Hao Bing and Du Chen's friends didn't even have time to react before Hao Bing was already squatting on the ground.
Hao Bing's companions reacted immediately and came over to pull Du Chen away, but Du Chen refused to give in and kicked Hao Bing, who was squatting on the ground. In the chaos, Du Chen was punched several times and kicked by Hao Bing's companions.
Du Chen saw that he was caught in a fight and thought he was going to get beaten, so he grabbed the person in front of him and punched him. While the person was dodging, Du Chen scurried out through the gap. Hao Bing had just recovered and saw Du Chen running away. He shouted, "Catch him quickly! Damn it! I'm going to beat him to death today!"
Hao Bing now feels like he is going crazy, not only because he was beaten, but mainly because it is an extracurricular activity and the area is full of students. He, a fifth grader, was beaten by a second grader without any chance of fighting back. How can he survive in school in the future? He must avenge this, otherwise anyone can bully him in the future.
