Chapter 18: Visiting the Market

The family of three waited for a short while on the road near their living area before a minibus came over, which was the bus going to the city.

The living area is not far from the city, only about 40 minutes by car. After getting off the bus, it takes 20 minutes to walk to the small commodity market.

Normally there are a lot of people in the small commodity market, all of whom are people from the city or surrounding areas who come to do business. Today is Saturday, and there are so many people that you have to squeeze through some places.

"Son, there are a lot of people here. You must follow me and your dad closely, okay?" Du Chen's mother warned him with some concern.

"No problem, Mom. If we really get separated, I'll wait for you at the market entrance!" Du Chen replied immediately.

Du Chen was also afraid of getting lost. There were too many people here, and he was small. If he didn't pay attention, he wouldn't be able to see his parents. There were no broadcasts in the market these days, and people didn't have cell phones. It would be really hard to find them if he got lost.

"Old Du, what do you think we should go see first?" Du Chen's mother asked as they walked.

Comrade Lao Du didn't answer. Instead, he turned to Du Chen and asked, "Son, what do you think we should go see first?"

"Let's go take a look at the stationery first. There's no problem selling stationery at the school gate. Then take a look at snacks, these sell in high volume." Du Chen said after thinking for a while.

"Okay, I'll listen to you." Du Chen's father said directly.

After walking around for a long time, they found several wholesale stationery stores. They had come here to check out the prices today, so they just randomly went into any store.

The store is not big, only about 30 square meters, but it is filled with things, from small things like rulers, erasers, pencils and sharpeners to large things like tables, chairs and benches. There is also a blackboard hanging on the wall. It seems to be quite complete.

"What would you like to buy?"

Seeing someone come in, a middle-aged man in the store took the initiative to ask.

"Nothing, I just came to take a look. I'm planning to open a stationery store and came to look at the student supplies." Du Chen's father said truthfully.

The middle-aged man then carefully asked how big the store was and what kind of stationery was needed, and Du Chen's parents told him the truth.

"I heard that this is your first time running a stationery store. So, I suggest you focus on selling pencils, rulers, erasers, and exercise books. These are things you can sell in large quantities, with small profits but quick turnover. For things like pencil cases and desk lamps, sell less. Or maybe wait and see after you open the store. These are things that are expensive and slow to sell, so you're more likely to run into a loss..."

The middle-aged man was enthusiastic and down-to-earth, offering a number of suggestions that Du Chen nodded to. Based on his experience, the middle-aged man's advice was sound, and he wasn't just blindly promoting something out of a desire for profit.

Then Du Chen's mother asked in detail about the prices of some necessities, took out a small notebook and recorded them one by one in detail.

"Boss, thank you. Let's go out for a walk. We just came here to take a look. If we need anything, please come to you."

After understanding everything, Du Chen's father said to the middle-aged man.

"Okay, okay, big brothers and sisters, you can take a look around and compare prices. I'm not bragging, but I can't say that my products are the most complete and the cheapest in the market, but they are of guaranteed quality and quantity. You can take a look and compare. If you need anything, come directly. I'm in the store all day." The middle-aged man said with a smile.

The family of three spent the entire morning touring the stationery wholesale stores in the market. Overall, the first store seemed more suitable. Some stores, even though they had the same items, were a few cents or even a dime more expensive than the first one. While not a significant difference, the sheer volume of sales meant a significant loss in profit. Some stores, like the stationery store near the school gate, were cheap, but the products were abysmal: the paper was too thin, the erasers were incredibly hard, and everything else was just terrible. Other stores were quick to ask for a specific quantity and recommend expensive, hard-to-find items like footballs, basketballs, and electric cars and robots for just a dozen yuan. These days, a student's tuition is only a little over a hundred yuan per semester. Asking parents to spend a few dozen yuan on a toy is unrealistic for most families.

"Son, are you tired? Let's go eat and take a rest." Du Chen's mother was afraid that Du Chen would be tired, so she said to Du Chen as it was almost noon.

"Let's go, let's go eat first, then sit for a while before going shopping." Du Chen had just nodded when his father said directly.

They walked out of the market, where there were many small stalls and a few small restaurants. Du Chen suggested they just grab some rice noodle wrappers and a pancake from a random street stall. Firstly, it was cheap and quick, and secondly, Du Chen had no interest in eating out.

In his previous life, after becoming an adult, Du Chen rarely had time to eat and cook at home. He usually just ate out, which was not clean, healthy, or tasty. So now Du Chen still likes the noodles and pancakes made by his mother. Although they are not as delicious as those from restaurants, they are healthy and happy.

But Du Chen's parents did not agree, saying that they had not brought Du Chen to the city for a long time, and since it was a rare opportunity for them to come, they wanted to take Du Chen to eat something good.

Du Chen's parents took Du Chen around outside the market for a long time, and finally found a restaurant that looked clean and had a large storefront. There were also many people inside, so it was probably quite good.

"Son and daughter-in-law, let's go this way. It looks clean and there are many people here. I guess the food will taste good. What do you want to eat? Dad will treat you!" Du Chen's father said, pointing to the restaurant.

In recent months, Lao Du has been in a good mood, with no major work worries. He's even said he'll get a raise soon. As for his son, he's been a well-behaved, sensible, and good student since he was little, but surprisingly, he's quietly been writing and contributing articles. He doesn't keep any of his earnings, instead giving them all to his wife to help with household expenses. It's such a relief.

The eldest son, who always gave him a headache, was probably inspired by his younger brother. He used to be playful and naughty, but now he is working hard. He knows how to study actively without the supervision of himself and his wife. He no longer fights with others, goes home on time after school, and studies hard until late every day.
