Chapter 2 The Horrible Nursery

Time flies, and in a blink of an eye, Du Chen is already four years old. During this period, Du Chen repeats the monotonous but happy days. Two neighbors upstairs also have children, both one year younger than Du Chen. The previous generation of Du Chen was a close friend, and later they all joined the army and returned to the railway system. They are better off than Du Chen, at least they can have a stable income regardless of drought or flood.

There are twelve households in Du Chen's unit, and all the men work at various railway stations, while the women stay at home to take care of the children and do housework. Du Bin walks to school by himself every day, and Du Chen's mother takes Du Chen out to visit friends after cleaning the house.

If the weather is good, women from every household will take a small stool and sit on it at the door of the unit. They may be picking vegetables to prepare lunch, or knitting sweaters and trousers. In short, their hands will definitely be busy while visiting and chatting.

At this time, Du Chen was laughing and joking with his two best friends from his previous life. In fact, most of the time it was Du Chen who was watching them. After all, he didn't know how to get along with these two little brats who couldn't even speak clearly, even though they were best friends in his previous life.

Du Chen, who still slept with his parents, had just fallen asleep that night when he heard his parents discussing him going to nursery school. In an instant, Du Chen woke up.

Although his life after rebirth is currently very comfortable, even though he can only act cute and silly every day, he still doesn't want to go through the same thing as in his previous life. He has no objection to going to school, but he really can't stand the nursery. A little brat cries, cries with a bunch of little brats, misses mom and dad, pulls his trouser pockets, fights, you are good to me, I don't want to be good to you, just thinking about it makes Du Chen's head hurt.

"Mom and Dad, I don't want to go to daycare."

"You're not asleep yet? Go to sleep quickly. If you have anything, you can talk to Mom and Dad tomorrow, okay?"

Most parents of that era were not very good at educating their children, nor did they know how to communicate with their children. Basically, when there was something, they would tell you that you were too young to understand, and then slowly drag things out.

Now Du Chen's mother had this trick on him. She estimated that by the time Du Chen woke up tomorrow morning, he would have already forgotten everything. Besides, how could such a little kid know what a daycare center was?

Du Chen obediently closed his eyes and went to sleep, because he knew that it was useless for him to say anything now, and he might get beaten if he continued to make trouble.

Du Chen's father was a soldier in the army and had a bad temper. Moreover, men of that era were somewhat patriarchal. You have to stroke his hair in the right way, otherwise the consequences will be unpredictable.

People in this era weren't very well educated, and they didn't know how to communicate. As a child, you just had to be obedient. If you didn't obey, you could easily be disciplined with a beating. If you didn't obey? Check out the military belt.

When Du Chen woke up the next morning, he was still thinking about the nursery. His father had already gone to work, so it was a good opportunity for him to communicate with his mother. After all, his mother was much gentler than his father.

"Mom, I don't want to go to daycare."

"Why don't you want to go to the nursery? There are lots of children there, and there are aunties who can teach you to sing, play games, and even draw. The nursery is so interesting."

"No, those kids are stupid and can only cry, just like Xiaoguang and Zhiqiang. I don't want to play with them."

For his own sake, Du Chen had to sacrifice his two best friends upstairs.

"Chenchen, you can't call Xiaoguang and Zhiqiang stupid. Who taught you to say that?"

"No, Xiaoguang and Zhiqiang cry all the time. They can't do anything. They are just stupid."

Du Chen continued to act dumb as usual. How do you expect a four-year-old to answer?

"Don't say that again. Xiaoguang and Zhiqiang are your friends. And there's an aunt in the nursery who will teach you to sing."

"No, I don't want it. I want to sing on the radio."

Well, Du Chen continued his cheating and stupid behavior.

Later, after Du Chen cried many times and was slapped twice by his father, Du Chen's parents decided to trick him into going to the nursery for a day to meet other children and play together. Maybe Du Chen would be willing to go.

"Son, how about this: you go to the nursery and play for a day tomorrow, and daddy will buy you ice cream when he gets home, okay?"

Du Chen's father started to tempt Du Chen with snacks.

Du Chen thought about it and decided that for his own sake he should just go along with his dad for a day before making a scene. That way he would have a stronger excuse. After all, his dad was a former car mechanic and now worked as a driver and mechanic on the company's vehicle team. His hands were incredibly strong, and if he accidentally hit his butt a few times, the consequences would be disastrous.

On a new day, Du Chen's parents took Du Chen to the nursery in the living area, which was just opposite the primary school and only a dozen minutes' walk away.

Du Chen's parents discussed the situation with the director and decided to let him in for a day as a trial. Du Chen didn't say anything or make a scene, just stood at the nursery door and silently cried. His aggrieved expression softened Du Chen's mother's heart, and she discussed with her husband whether they should listen to Du Chen or not attend the nursery.

Du Chen's father didn't buy it. As a tough soldier, he didn't believe in tears. So Du Chen's father dragged his wife out of the nursery.

"Little Du Chen, can you come to the classroom with the teacher? The teacher will take you to meet the other children."

"Um."

Du Chen obediently walked to the classroom with the nursery teacher. As he walked, Du Chen thought about how he could make his parents give up the idea of sending him to the nursery.

Just as he walked to the door of the classroom and had not yet entered, he heard the chattering sound inside. The moment he opened the classroom door, Du Chen experienced what it meant to have devilish sound piercing his ears.

"Quiet, children, be quiet."

The nursery teacher's words were gentle but not particularly impactful. It took a while for the classroom to quiet down. It wasn't too big. There were no tables, just a few small benches and a dozen or so small children. The walls were clean, devoid of slogans or children's drawings. It was a simple classroom. In the corner was a bookcase filled with storybooks and comic books.
