"Give it to your brother? Why give it to him? The most important thing for him now is to study hard. What's the point of giving it to him?" Du Chen's mother was a little confused.
"Mom, you see my brother has been studying very hard recently, but he always has to balance work and rest, right? It's not bad for him to listen to music before going to bed, and listening to music can help him sleep." Du Chen explained to his mother.
"Besides, it's not like you can just give it to him directly. For example, you can just keep it during normal times, and don't give it to him when he's studying. Just let him listen to it for a while before bed. Our tape recorder is too big and inconvenient, and playing music at night would annoy the neighbors. Can't I just let my brother wear headphones with the Walkman? It won't affect anything."
Du Chen's father listened and nodded in agreement. Actually, Du Chen's father also liked the Walkman; men, after all, like these things. Du Chen and Du Bin's love of music stemmed from their fathers. Du Chen's father played the harmonica and flute very well. Later, when Du Bin was in technical secondary school, he taught himself guitar, and Du Chen learned to play the electronic keyboard.
Du Chen thought for a moment and continued, "Besides, my brother is in junior high school now and needs English, so he can practice listening when he has nothing to do."
"This is useful, very good." Du Chen's mother said happily.
As parents, as long as it helps children learn, it doesn’t matter how much money they spend.
Seeing that it was getting late, the three of them wandered around a bit, bought some household items, and then headed back to the station. On the way home, Du Chen's parents were talking in low voices. Du Chen listened in on a few of their conversations; they were talking about opening a shop. Their visit to the small commodity market had strengthened their resolve to open one.
They arrived home quickly. Du Bin hadn't finished school yet. Du Chen's parents went to the kitchen to prepare dinner, while Du Chen went to the main room to continue writing. Du Chen had finished his homework the night before.
Not long after, Du Bin also came back from school. His parents had prepared dinner with leftovers from lunch, and Du Chen's parents made something else.
Dinner is a time for family conversation. Lunch is a busy time, so we quickly take a nap after dinner. In the afternoon, we go to work or school. After dinner, there's still a long time before bed, so we have some free time. So, dinner is a great time for family conversation.
"Old Du, how about we go to the school gate tomorrow to check out that store and make a decision?" Du Chen's mother went to the market today and after asking about the lowest price, she became more confident about opening a store.
"Okay, let's go check it out tomorrow, and then we'll buy two packs of cigarettes and two bottles of wine for Lao Zhang," Du Chen's father replied. He was actually quite confident after today's shopping. Plus, with its location right in front of the school, it would take a while to lose money.
"Mom and Dad, have you decided to open a store? Then I will let our classmates buy things in our store in the future." Du Bin interrupted at this time.
Du Bin is also looking forward to opening a shop. As a child, he has always wished his family owned a small shop so he could own all the delicious and fun things. Although Du Bin has matured a lot recently, he still has a childish heart; it's in his nature. Unlike Du Chen, who has a small body but a middle-aged man inside.
"Lao Du, now that we have opened a store, what will we do with the children at home? Who will take care of them?" Du Chen's mother started to worry about the two children again.
"Mom, I think that place is quite big. We can put up a bunk bed in the innermost part. My brother and I can rest there at noon. It's closer to school, and we can sleep a little longer. We can also cook lunch there." Du Chen gave his idea directly.
In fact, it is definitely difficult to sleep well in the store at noon. In the afternoon, the school gate has not opened yet, and there are piles of students waiting at the school gate. Business is best at that time. The time is too tight during the time of going to and from school, and actually nothing can be sold. Instead, the best business is when there are piles of students waiting at the school gate before school in the afternoon.
Du Chen's parents hadn't noticed this, and they thought what he said made sense. After all, once the store was open, it wouldn't be possible for them to regret it. Du Chen also believed that a little nap at noon wouldn't affect him or his brother.
"Yeah, what the second son said is right. We can cook and eat there at noon and rest there at the same time. I'll find two bunk beds for you from the workplace." Du Chen's father said after thinking for a while.
"That's settled. Let's go take a look tomorrow and then confirm with Lao Zhang. That way, someone else won't get there first."
As they were talking, dinner was over. Du Chen's mother cleaned up the dishes, and Du Chen took out the Walkman he bought today and handed it to Du Bin.
"Brother, this is a gift that my parents and I bought for you today. Take a look and see if you like it." Du Chen stopped Du Bin who was about to go back to the cabin to study.
"A gift for me?" Du Bin asked, pointing at himself in disbelief.
Du Bin couldn't believe it, but he could understand it. Why would he buy himself a gift during a festival? Besides, it was popular to give gifts to children these days. I just needed to feed and raise you. There was no need for a gift for your birthday.
The reason why we were able to buy a gift for Du Bin this time was, firstly, that the family had become a little better off recently, secondly, Du Bin had indeed been behaving well recently, and thirdly, Du Chen's parents were in a good mood recently because of a series of things. For all these reasons, they agreed to buy Du Bin a Walkman.
"That's right. This is what your brother wants to buy for you. We see that you have been more motivated recently and have been studying hard instead of playing around. So we give it to you as a reward. See if you like it." Du Chen's father said to Du Bin with a smile.
Du Bin couldn't wait to open the outer cardboard. The Walkman was black. It seemed really old-fashioned and ugly to people nowadays, but in Du Bin's eyes at that time, this Walkman was so fashionable. He had never seen any of his classmates use this thing.
