"Mom, I don't have any good idea what to do with the third room right now." Du Chen said to his mother.
"Well, it's okay. Du Bin, you and your brother can continue to think about what to do with our third room when you have time. But there's no rush. Let's finish these two rooms first. At worst, we can leave the third room empty and use it as a warehouse." Du Chen's mother said to the two brothers.
The mother and her two sons chatted for a while. Du Bin went back to the cabin to continue studying, while Du Chen continued to write his own fairy tales. This time he was going to write a fairy tale. If successful, he would write a long novel, but each issue would be a separate short story. Writing like this would also be a long-term meal ticket.
Du Chen's father drank a lot today and didn't wake up until dinner time. He was still snoring, so the mother and two of them ignored him and ate dinner first. It was not until around 8:30 in the evening that Du Chen's father woke up.
"Look, I told you to drink less, but you're so drunk that you want to die. Are you still feeling bad? Let me heat up some food for you." Du Chen's mother complained about her husband, but in the end she felt sorry for her man and prepared to go to the kitchen to heat up some dinner for him.
"No, wife, I don't want to eat. Is there anything to drink? My mouth is dry."
"There's some porridge, would you like some?"
"Okay, let's have some porridge. It'll make my stomach feel better." Du Chen's father said quickly when he heard about the porridge. His stomach was so uncomfortable that he couldn't eat anything. He just wanted to drink something.
"Okay, then wait a moment, I'll heat it up for you." Du Chen's mother went to the kitchen.
When Du Chen's father saw that he was the only one in the big house, he got out of bed and walked to the small house. He saw that both his sons were in the small house. The eldest son was studying at the desk, and Du Chen was leaning on the bed, listening to a Walkman with headphones on, and reading a book called "Student Days" in his hand.
Du Bin noticed his father first and quickly asked, "Dad, what's wrong? Are you feeling uncomfortable? Drink less next time."
"Yeah, it's okay, son. How about studying?"
"Well, I'm doing math problems. Mom is heating up food for you?" Du Bin heard some noise coming from the kitchen and asked his father.
"Well, your mom is heating up some porridge for me. Would you two brothers like to have some?"
"No need, we're full, Dad, you should go back to the big house and lie down." Du Chen also spoke.
"Okay, then you guys continue studying. I'll go back to the big house."
After a while, the porridge was heated up. Du Chen's father patted his stomach comfortably and said to Du Chen's mother: "This bowl of porridge is so comfortable to drink. My stomach feels warm, and I didn't feel uncomfortable just now."
"Tsk, who told you to drink so much? You deserve it!"
"Okay, okay, my wife, you must drink less next time. You caught up today." Comrade Lao Du quickly said nice things.
"Okay, okay, I don't believe you." Du Chen's mother said with disgust.
"By the way, wife, we should start decorating the shop as soon as we finish registering tomorrow. The sooner we open the shop, the sooner we can make money." Du Chen's father quickly changed the subject.
"Yeah, that's what I meant. By the way, Chenchen told me in the afternoon..." Du Chen's mother briefly told Du Chen's father about the content of the afternoon conversation.
"The second son is smart. Renting books is a good idea. We have a lot of land now, so we can do other things." Du Chen's father agreed.
"Yeah, I think it's great too. By the way, Chenchen also said that we can go to a larger book market to buy second-hand books. That's cheaper. I heard from Chenchen that second-hand books are sold by weight."
"Really? I didn't know that. That would save a lot of money. I was just thinking about how many books to buy. Now it's a problem. New ones are too expensive. I would feel bad if they got damaged or dirty after renting them out." Du Chen's father said happily.
"That's right, then we'll go find Lao Zhang tomorrow to register first, and then start with some simple decoration, so we can open the store as soon as possible."
Du Chen's parents chatted for a while, both of them eager to see how their store would perform and how quickly they'd start making money. In the little room, Du Chen and Du Bin would occasionally ponder what their store would look like in the future. Of course, Du Chen was more concerned with the impact it would have on his family. But it was a good start, after all. It was the 1990s, a time of rapid growth and a seller's market; as long as they put their heart into it, they could make money.
The whole family got up early on Monday morning. Du Chen and Du Bin were preparing to go to school. Comrade Lao Du first asked for leave from the unit, and then came back to go to the building construction section with Du Chen's mother to register with Lao Zhang.
The father and his two sons went out first, while Du Chen's mother tidied up at home and waited for Du Chen's father to come back before going out together.
"Have you taken your leave? Then let's go. I've packed everything." After a while, Du Chen's father came back home on his bike. Seeing this, Du Chen's mother prepared to get dressed and go out.
"Well, I'm not busy these days. I've taken two days off. If there's anything, Xiao Liu from the car class will come find me."
"Okay, let's go."
The Housing Construction Section was not far from Du Chen's home, only a ten-minute walk away. Du Chen's father didn't ride a bike, and the couple arrived at the Housing Construction Section in a short while. Comrade Lao Du had been there once, and he took his wife straight to Lao Zhang's office.
"Lao Zhang, my wife and I are here." Lao Zhang's office door was open, and Comrade Lao Du walked straight in and greeted Lao Zhang.
"I guess you should be here soon. Come, drink some water first. I'll prepare it for you." As Lao Zhang said this, he took the thermos from the side, poured two glasses of water and handed them to Du Chen's parents.
"Did you drink too much yesterday? I can't remember what happened afterwards." Du Chen's father asked with a smile.
"Hey, I drank so much that I don't know what I'm drinking either, but luckily I don't feel uncomfortable, and I enjoyed it. I haven't drunk so much in a long time."
