Chapter 19 Walkman

Du Chen and his family of three slowly returned to the market. There were not many people in the market in the afternoon. In the morning, most of them were merchants who came to purchase goods, while in the afternoon, there were only a few scattered customers.

There weren't many people in the afternoon, so Du Chen and his family weren't in a hurry. They just strolled around leisurely. When they reached the grocery section, which sold all kinds of snacks, they went into each store, asked questions, and chatted. After looking around and since it was still early, the family decided to continue shopping.

As they walked, they passed by an electronics store and Du Chen decided to go in and take a look.

At the entrance to the shop, a glass cabinet houses small items like digital watches and Walkman headphones. Behind it hangs a quartz clock on the wall, and on the floor sits an electric fan and a dual-cassette recorder. Everything feels old-fashioned.

"Auntie, how much are your electronic watches?" Du Chen asked with interest when he saw the electronic watches in the glass cabinet.

"Little boy, which one do you like? Auntie will take it out and show it to you."

The proprietress doesn’t look very old, probably around thirty years old.

"Auntie, I mean, what's the wholesale price? What's the minimum order?"

The shopkeeper was curious, thinking the child might be interested in a digital watch, but she wasn't expecting him to ask about the wholesale price. She glanced at Du Chen's parents, but seeing they remained silent, she became even more curious about why the child wasn't the one asking the price, instead.

"Little boy, which one did you choose? The price of each one is different." The proprietress said with a smile.

"Which is the cheapest one? As long as it can be used and keeps accurate time, that's fine. How much is the one with a date?" Du Chen asked, pointing to one of the watches.

"Little boy, the cheapest one is five yuan each, and the ones with dates are ten yuan each. If you order a large quantity, we can negotiate." Since there was nothing to do now, the proprietress continued to chat with Du Chen.

"Auntie, can you take it out and let me see it?"

The proprietress pulled two watches from the glass case and handed them to Du Chen. He played with them for a moment. The workmanship was so-so, but the designs were nice, and the cheaper model came in several colors. He was worried the price might make it difficult to sell. He planned to sell the cheaper model to elementary school students, and the one with the date was for middle schoolers.

"Auntie, is it time to leave?"

This is also very important. It is not a big problem if the time is not accurate when selling it to primary school students, but when it comes to junior high school students, the time must be accurate.

"It's okay, about ten minutes a week."

Du Chen nodded, this was still within the acceptable range.

"What's the price for taking more?"

This time the proprietress did not answer, but looked at Du Chen's parents.

Seeing this, Du Chen's parents explained to the owner that they were here today to explore the market and prepare to open the store. They let the child ask questions to exercise him. The owner nodded, realizing that this was a real customer.

"If you buy more than fifty pieces, you can get a dollar off." The proprietress said after thinking for a while.

"Okay, Auntie. I'll come to you to get the goods after I open my store in a few days." Du Chen didn't bargain anymore. He had no intention of buying any goods today. He just came to test the waters. It's not fair to bargain for a long time, and then someone gives you a discount but you don't buy any goods.

"Auntie, how much is this Walkman?" Du Chen pointed to the Walkman in the glass cabinet.

"Little boy, you know this is a Walkman, right? I'm telling you, I just bought this recently. It's super popular in big cities, but it's very expensive, one hundred and twenty yuan."

The proprietress was surprised that Du Chen even knew about Walkmans. She hadn't dared to buy more than a dozen of them last time because they were too expensive and she was worried they wouldn't sell well. As she expected, she didn't sell a single one. However, she quoted Du Chen the retail price.

"Auntie, that's too expensive. I think it's made in Nanyue. It's not a big brand, probably from a family workshop there. Auntie, can you tell me the actual price?" Du Chen knew the price was a bit high when he heard it. Even if they bought the goods from here and resold them three or four times, the price wouldn't be that high.

"Oh, kid, you are really amazing. You even know that this is produced in Guangdong. Are you planning to use it yourself or to import some?" Seeing Du Chen tell the origin of the Walkman right away, the proprietress did not dare to underestimate this kid. Most adults would not pay attention to where these things are produced.

But the boss lady was also very shrewd. She didn't let anyone know what Du Chen meant. Personal use and wholesale were naturally different.

"Of course I want to try selling it, but I have to buy one first to try it out." Du Chen's answer was ambiguous.

"You are a very smart kid. Auntie likes smart kids like you. So, I will give it to you at the cost price of 80 yuan. Go back and try it."

"Auntie, that's too expensive, sixty! Give me another pair of headphones!" Du Chen really disliked the ugly external speakers on the shells of today's Walkmans, so he added headphones.

Du Chen estimated that if it was 60, the boss lady would make some money. The Walkman didn't have much technical content, and the purchase price was only 45 to 50 yuan. The earphones were given away as a gift when they left the factory, but the merchants split them up and sold them separately, so Du Chen didn't hesitate.

It was also the first time that Du Chen's parents saw Du Chen bargaining. In the morning, Du Chen had heard little about it, so they didn't expect the price to be so low.

"Little boy, the price is too low. Please add a little more. You can't let Auntie lose money, right?" The proprietress said with a wry smile.

On the surface, the boss lady seemed reluctant, but in fact she was quite willing in her heart. Du Chen guessed correctly, the purchase price of the Walkman was 45, so Du Chen could still make a profit if he returned the price.

Her supplier is a large wholesaler in Longcheng, who has a lot of connections in South Guangdong. She also has an old relationship with that company in Longcheng, so the price she gets is not expensive. Others with the same quality are about ten yuan more expensive than hers.
