Chapter 120 Returning Home

Qingshan City, Municipal Party Committee Family Compound, Wen Family.

Today is New Year's Eve. Wen Yulong and his wife took the train early yesterday morning and arrived in Qingshan City with their children early this morning.

Coincidentally, when Wen Yulong and his family arrived home, Wen Ziqing had just left.

Wen Yiran knew that Zhao Qingshan was eager to return home. Zhao Qingshan had stayed in Qingshan City for more than ten days just for him, and he couldn't let his brothers miss the New Year's Eve dinner with their family because of him.

This was the first time Wen Yiran called his son Wen Yuxiang for personal matters and asked him to arrange a car to take Zhao Qingshan and Wen Ziqing back to Zhaojiagou early this morning.

When Wu Xiuli entered the house, she didn't see Wen Ziqing or her mother-in-law Feng Xueying. She also saw that the housekeeper was a stranger, which made her feel a little strange. However, Wu Xiuli has always been a cautious person. Seeing these changes in Wen Yiran's family, she just kept them in mind and waited to understand them slowly in the future.

Wen Ziqiu was different. In City N, she was very popular with Wen Yulong, and because she was a girl, many people were tolerant of her for Wen Yulong's sake.

Wen Yiran was happy to see Wen Yulong and his family return. He was about to go out for a walk, so he stood in the living room waiting for Wen Yulong to come in.

"Grandpa, I miss you so much." As soon as Wen Ziqiu saw Wen Yiran, he rushed up and wanted to hug Wen Yiran and act coquettishly.

Wen Ziqiu understood that within the Wen family, Wen Yiran held the most authority, and only he could make the decisions. No one in the Wen family would object to anything Wen Yiran agreed with. Conversely, no one in the Wen family dared to agree with anything Wen Yiran opposed.

Over the years, Wen Ziqiu, relying on his thick skin and sweet talk, has been constantly getting close to Wen Yiran. Wen Yiran, for the sake of his son and seeing how well-behaved Wen Ziqiu is, has become a bit more polite towards Wu Xiuli.

"Wen Ziqiu, don't rush around. Grandpa just recovered from an illness and can't stand being hit." Wen Yulun had been taking care of Wen Yiran during the past two days of vacation. He knew Wen Yiran's health couldn't withstand a collision like Wen Ziqiu's. Wen Yulun didn't hesitate, blocking Wen Ziqiu's attack with his body and speaking directly.

"Dad, I don't know..." Wen Ziqiu was furious, but he didn't dare to say anything bad about his uncle Wen Yulun. Wen Yulun had been staying in Qingshan City, and the degree of favor he enjoyed with his grandfather was far beyond the reach of those of them who only came back once or twice a year.

"Dad, are you sick? What's wrong with you? Are you feeling better? Why don't you call and come to City N?" When Wen Yulong heard that Wen Yiran was sick, he couldn't help but become nervous. He opened his mouth and started to greet him in a series of words, but ignored his daughter who was acting coquettishly towards him.

"Dad, please take care of yourself!" Wu Xiuli's face was also full of concern. In the Wen family, with Wen Yiran as his guardian, Wen Yulong had saved himself a lot of trouble. Wen Yulong was a stubborn person, and if it weren't for Wen Yiran, he might have offended a lot of people. Wu Xiuli wished that Wen Yiran was alive and well, and could provide shelter for their little family.

"Grandpa, are you okay?" Wen Ziyun didn't think too much about it. He always admired his grandfather Wen Yiran, admired Wen Yiran for having been on the battlefield, admired Wen Yiran for being fair in doing things, and admired Wen Yiran's tenacious character... Wen Yiran was like a towering mountain in Wen Ziyun's heart.

"It's okay, I'm much better now." Wen Yiran didn't want to talk about his illness. The real reason for his hospitalization was too embarrassing to reveal. Could he say Feng Xueying got jealous and sent him to the hospital? Or that he and his wife were too foolish to be tricked by a little girl? Either way, he couldn't talk about it.

"That's good, that's good," Wen Yulong breathed a sigh of relief. Of the Wen children, Wen Yulong lived the farthest from home. Busy with work and his own family, he only paid one visit a year to his parents, during the Lunar New Year.

Looking at Wen Yiran's gray hair, Wen Yulong realized for the first time that his father, who was like a towering mountain in his heart, had actually grown old.

"Yulong, please put your luggage in order. Aunt Wang has been a bit busy these days and hasn't had time to clean up the room you are staying in." Wen Yiran frowned slightly when he saw his son and daughter-in-law carrying a lot of bags.

Feng Xueying's illness had kept the Wen family busy these past few days. Luckily, Aunt Wang and the second daughter-in-law helped, keeping things from becoming a complete mess. However, one person's energy was limited. Aunt Wang had to prepare Feng Xueying's hospital meals and deliver them to the hospital, leaving her with no time to clean Wu Xiuli's room.

Wen Yulong and his family used to live on the third floor, where there were two empty rooms. Even when Wen Yulong and his family were away from Qingshan City, they were always empty, waiting for their return. When Aunt Liu was around, she would go in and clean every other day. But after Aunt Liu left, Aunt Wang was too busy and hadn't bothered to clean up. Actually, those two rooms were clean enough; Wu Xiuli only had to make the sheets and sew the quilt herself.

At this stage, there's no duvet cover. The quilt is made by wrapping a layer of cloth around the batting and sewing it together. A skilled quiltmaker can sew a quilt in about half an hour, threading the needle. For less skilled quiltmakers, the process is more laborious, sometimes taking two or three hours.

Wu Xiuli's cooking skills were decent, but her crafts were terrible. Back in City N, after she'd finished washing her quilt, she'd always ask one or two people to help sew it. The wives of the military wives living in the compound all had men of lower rank than Wen Yulong, so Wu Xiuli still found plenty of people willing to help her sew. Consequently, for all those years, she'd never had to worry about her quilts.

After Wen Yiran explained these things, Wen Yulun helped him out for a walk. Before leaving, Zhao Qingshan had told him that Wen Yiran needed to eat a light diet and move more to recover quickly. Today was New Year's Eve, and Wen Yiran and Wen Yulun planned to walk to the People's Hospital to visit his wife.

Feng Xueying grew increasingly haggard, and Wen Yiran felt bad too. He called his uncle, Wen Jingtao, and asked him to help find a miracle doctor who could treat her difficult illness. Otherwise, if Feng Xueying continued to grow haggard, she would eventually die.

Wen Yiran was filled with worry. Although his wife had been a little out of tune in the past two years, as a couple in their youth, they would always be together in old age. Wen Yiran still hoped that Feng Xueying would be well. When they were young, the old woman had endured a lot with him. Seeing that their lives were getting better day by day, Wen Yiran naturally hoped to spend the rest of his life with Feng Xueying.

Wu Xiuli only frowned after Wen Yiran and Wen Yulun left. It was rare for them to come home once a year, and they had to do everything themselves. Why did they come back?
