Chapter 17 Zhou Zhigang

Zhou Chunping himself had never done farm work and did not know the aspirations of his sons and daughters-in-law living in the countryside.

The sons were so envious of their father because they saw that he didn't have to work in the fields every day, but went to work neatly dressed and clean, and earned more money in a month than they earned through hard work.

Unfortunately, knowing earlier is priceless. If Zhou Chunping knew that his decision to let his daughter take over the job had torn the Zhou family apart, would he regret it?

When Zhou Zhigang stepped into the yard, he saw his father hurried out the door. He didn't even respond when he called "Dad" and just waved his hand.

Wu Jinfeng saw Zhou Chunping rummaging through boxes and drawers for a while and then went out. She couldn't help but spit at Zhou Chunping's back in anger: "Bah! You are so picky and you don't know how to spend your money on me."

Wu Jinfeng knew Zhou Chunping must have gone to town to see that little girl, Xiaojiu. He'd just been laughed at by the neighbors, and Zhou Chunping was definitely going to Sanhe Town to redeem himself. Zhou Chunping was just that kind of person, someone who cared about his reputation and feared gossip.

Wu Jinfeng couldn't understand Zhou Chunping's behavior. In her opinion, no matter what, it was not as important as having money in your own pocket. Money in your own pocket is like talking to someone else. Spending money to buy face is the most foolish thing to do.

"Mom, what happened to my dad?" Zhou Zhigang wanted to discuss something with the old man today. Why was he in such a hurry so early in the morning?

"They went to town." Wu Jinfeng muttered unhappily, "Your whole family is full of troublemakers, and your father always protects them."

Zhou Zhigang was stunned.

Nine times out of ten when Wu Jinfeng cursed a troublemaker, she was referring to her third brother's wife. Could something have happened to her?

"Dabao! Where did you go last night? Your wife went back to her parents' home for something, but you didn't come home?" Wu Jinfeng complained to her thick and steady eldest son.

The eldest daughter-in-law Li Chunjiao brought her two sons back to her parents' home yesterday to attend a wedding banquet, leaving her daughter Zhou Meimei at home.

Li Chunjiao's horoscope is auspicious, with both parents and children still alive. In rural areas, this kind of fate is called "a person of complete happiness." Families holding weddings always invite a few "people of complete happiness" to help out, as if to bring some good fortune to the host family.

In recent years, whenever there's a happy event in Li Chunjiao's hometown, she's often asked to be the "blessing host." Wu Jinfeng is quite satisfied with this role, as she gets to bring back food and red envelopes.

Li Chunjiao was a smart person. Every time she went to be a "lucky person", she would give a red envelope of one or two cents to Wu Jinfeng after returning home.

Seeing Zhou Zhigang's dark circles under his eyes, Wu Jinfeng was dissatisfied with Li Chunjiao. When Li Chunjiao left, she took her two grandchildren with her and left her daughter Zhou Meimei at home. Zhou Meimei was only nine years old and didn't know anything. She didn't see her father come home last night, and she didn't even bother to go next door to inform them.

Her son, has he suffered? He seems to be having trouble sleeping.

Zhou Zhigang uncomfortably dodged his mother's hand that was reaching out to touch his face and said, "Mom, the accountants from several villages had a meeting in town yesterday. After the meeting, everyone had dinner together. I can't go home alone, can I?"

Thinking of the fun he had last night, Zhou Zhigang was lost in thought for a moment. City people really know how to have fun. That white figure was like a snake, twisting and turning...

"My Dabao is really awesome. Even the town cadres invited you to dinner!" After hearing Zhou Zhigang's words, Wu Jinfeng smiled happily.

Wu Jinfeng has always been proud of her eldest son. Zhou Zhigang, a junior high school graduate and skilled in abacus, became the village accountant after the old accountant retired. He's a prominent figure in the village and even has a few exchanges with town officials.

"Hmm," Zhou Zhigang replied, no longer wanting to speak to Wu Jinfeng. He was just a small village accountant, and his trip to town was a routine village accounting meeting, and his meals were also arranged by the town. Who did the town leaders know about Zhou Zhigang?

I remember last night at dinner, a town official specifically mentioned Zhou Zhixin, saying he was Zhou Zhixin's comrade-in-arms and had retired and returned to the town last year. The official even smiled and reacquainted himself with Zhou Zhixin's brother.

'Zhou Zhixin's brother' instead of 'Zhou Zhigang', this title made Zhou Zhigang feel unspeakable bitterness in his heart.

Zhou Zhigang knew that his third brother was much better than him.

Heaven had a special favor for Zhou Zhixin, not only making him tall and handsome, but also giving him a beautiful wife. Zhou Zhixin also worked hard and was promoted in the army, with a bright future ahead of him.

Zhou Zhigang was an accountant, so he certainly knew what a company commander in his twenties meant. This position represented his younger brother, who was doing well in the army and had a good chance of promotion as long as he worked hard.

Zhou Zhigang had a gloomy personality and ordinary looks. In fact, except for Zhou Zhixin, all the other brothers and sisters in the Zhou family looked like Zhou Chunping, with thick lips, small eyes, and dark skin.

If I were a city dweller, if I had a decent job, even if I wasn't handsome, maybe... she would be interested in me, right?

Thinking of the bright smiling face in his heart, Zhou Zhigang wiped his face with his hand with a wry smile and shook his head.

"Dad, where were you last night? Something happened at home and I was almost scared to death." Zhou Meimei saw Zhou Zhigang walk into the house in a daze and rushed over.

Before Li Chunjiao returned to her parents' home yesterday, she told Zhou Meimei to keep an eye on Zhou Zhigang. Zhou Zhigang was the accountant in Zhoujia Village, and there were many young wives in the village who liked him. Li Chunjiao had always been wary of him.

However, Zhou Meimei watched helplessly as Zhou Miaomiao pushed Zhou Yuanyuan into the pond with a ferocious look on her face yesterday, and she was terrified. Seeing Zhao Yunxiang knocking on the door of Zhou Miaomiao's house for a long time with a terrifying look on her face, Zhou Meimei was even more frightened.

She was also present at what happened yesterday. I wonder if Third Aunt will come to settle the score with her?

Zhou Meimei didn't eat dinner. She lay in bed alone and cried herself to sleep. She didn't even notice that Zhou Zhigang didn't come home last night.

When she woke up in the morning, Zhou Meimei heard Wu Jinfeng scolding Zhao Yunxiang. Her usually honest and dull aunt actually talked back to her grandmother.

In the end, even Second Aunt and Grandpa were alarmed. Zhou Meimei hid in the room and didn't dare to go out, for fear that Second Aunt would catch her and ask her to testify that Miaomiao did not push Yuanyuan.

Grandma said that children who lie are not good children and will go to the hell of tongue-picking after death. She didn't want to help Miaomiao lie, she didn't want to go to hell.

"What happened?" Zhou Zhigang followed up on Zhou Meimei's question. In his opinion, the big thing Meimei was talking about was nothing more than a quarrel between a few cousins.

"It was Miaomiao. Miaomiao pushed Zhou Yuanyuan into the water yesterday." Zhou Meimei burst into tears and said, "Zhou Yuanyuan almost drowned. Dad, I was scared to death."

"What?" Zhou Zhigang was shocked. Thinking back to Wu Jinfeng's words about "a troublemaker", he suddenly understood.
