Chapter 309 Regret

"It's nothing, nothing. Compared to your efforts, my little thing is nothing." Li Hongmei smiled and waved her hand, feeling that she had come to the right place today. Not only could she meet Zhou Zhixin, but she also gained a lot of favorability in front of him.

Li Hongmei hadn't considered the merit of a small blade of grass. She was willing to run this errand for Xu Heizi just to meet Zhou Zhixin. After all, Zhou Zhixin was someone Li Hongmei had loved before, and she had also made some sacrifices for him.

In the days since their reunion, Zhou Zhixin treated Li Hongmei like a monster and avoided her whenever possible.

When it was late at night and everyone was asleep, Li Hongmei felt very unhappy when she thought about how the person was so close yet so far away from her.

Zhou Zhixin is much more mature now than he was three years ago. Seeing Zhou Zhixin becoming increasingly outstanding, Li Hongmei feels a tinge of regret deep down. Back then, Li Hongmei didn't pursue Zhou Zhixin any further, seeing that he was only a company-level cadre.

In the army, there are a lot of company-level cadres like Zhou Zhixin, and many of them stop at this level. When they are in their thirties, they are demobilized and return to the countryside, and their whole lives are wasted.

Zhou Zhixin wasn't even thirty yet, but he was already a battalion commander. What did this mean? Li Hongmei, who had been in the army for so many years, knew this. Being a battalion commander before the age of thirty meant Zhou Zhixin's future in the army was far greater than this. If given the chance, becoming a division commander or even deputy commander of a military sub-district wasn't out of the question.

In just three years, Zhou Zhixin had achieved so much, which made Li Hongmei regret it. If she had known that Zhou Zhixin had such a bright future, she would not have given up on him for the sake of face.

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as knowing in advance. Although Li Hongmei has been careful not to let Zhou Zhixin find out that she has ulterior motives, Zhou Zhixin is not a fool.

As his military rank increased, Zhou Zhixin became more cautious. He was not only responsible for his own success or failure but also for the entire battalion of soldiers under his command.

After Li Hongmei finished her speech, seeing that Zhou Zhixin did not ask her to stay for a while, she stood up awkwardly and said, "Captain Zhou, the work report is over, so I'm leaving now."

"Okay, Dr. Li, take care." When Zhou Zhixin saw Li Hongmei stand up, he quickly stood up and made a gesture to see her off.

God knows, Zhou Zhixin was eager for Li Hongmei to leave quickly. Seeing that the lunch break was already halfway over, and judging by Yunxiang's expression just now, it seemed like she was angry. He still had to use the next moment to comfort Yunxiang!

Also, today is the first day of school for the children, and as a father, he doesn't have time to send them to school. Instead, he's been so busy with work that he's completely forgotten about their schooling. He even called Yunxiang last night to say he'd be home today. Judging by Yunxiang's attitude, he definitely won't be able to send the children today. I wonder if the kids can find their way to school on their own? Will they be nervous on their first day of school?

Li Hongmei saw Zhou Zhixin's eyes frequently looking at the door that Zhao Yunxiang had just entered, and she couldn't help but feel extremely angry. However, since Captain Zhou was worried about his wife, it didn't seem like it was her turn to be jealous.

Li Hongmei walked out of Zhou Zhixin's house with a sour mood. Zhou Zhixin did not see her off. He stood inside the door, nodded to Li Hongmei, and then immediately closed the door and went about his own business.

Li Hongmei was stunned. She hadn't expected her, an old comrade, to have such little standing in Zhou Zhixin's heart. It was such a short distance, and he didn't even offer to walk her to the stairs? Of course! If Zhou Zhixin could just walk her to the roadside outside the base to catch a ride, that would be what Li Hongmei wanted most.

Unfortunately, the goddess has a heart but the king has no dream! She has been secretly sad for him for so many years, but what is the point?

Li Hongmei shook her head and bit her lips with her white teeth, which was a sign she would show when she was very unhappy.

He Lai Di stood in the corridor with her ears perked up, eavesdropping on what was happening in Zhou Zhixin's house.

Although Zhou Zhixin's door was open, the voices were low. He Lai Di didn't dare to eavesdrop too blatantly, so naturally she didn't hear anything. She could only vaguely hear words like "regimental commander" and "regimental political commissar," which made He Lai Di's heart burn even more. He Lai Di's husband was a company commander, and he didn't have many opportunities to meet with the political commissar, and even fewer opportunities to exchange a few words. But Zhou Zhixin, on the other hand, often saw both the regimental commander and the political commissar. When He Lai Di's husband spoke of Zhou Zhixin, his tone was always sour.

Zhang Changsheng, He Lai Di's husband, privately told her that Zhou Zhixin must have some background to have been transferred to the Kyoto Guards. After all, officers in the Guards all started out as soldiers within their own regiment and worked their way up. Even the regimental commander, Ren Junyong, was no exception. Apparently, the Kyoto Guards hadn't transferred any officers from other regiments in ten years.

He Lai Di didn't understand what Zhang Changsheng meant. She just remembered one thing: Zhou Zhixin was promoted because he had someone behind him.

If her son Changsheng could gain the appreciation of the leaders behind Zhou Zhixin, maybe he could also get a promotion? He Lai Di thought so in her simple mind.

So, ever since Zhao Yunxiang and her family moved in, He Lai Di had been constantly prying into Zhou Zhixin's household, eager to quickly find the incredibly capable person Zhang Changsheng had been talking about. He Lai Di felt that she was far more capable than Zhao Yunxiang in her dealings with others, and if such a capable person truly existed, they would surely appreciate their Changsheng.

For more than a month, He Lai Di hadn't seen any guests visiting Zhao Yunxiang's house. It was not until today that a beautiful female soldier came to see Zhou Zhixin.

"Sister, are you related to Captain Zhou's family?" Seeing Li Hongmei standing in a daze in front of Zhou Zhixin's house, He Lai Di hurried over to find out some information.

"No." Li Hongmei couldn't help but frown when she saw He Lai Di. She hadn't forgotten that not long ago, the garbage bag in the hands of this military wife had brushed against her trouser legs, making her feel nauseous.

Li Hongmei initially didn't want to pay attention to He Lai Di. As a Kyoto native, she looked down upon a soldier's wife from the countryside. However, she then remembered that He Lai Di was Zhou Zhixin's neighbor, and she responded.

"So you're related to Captain Zhou's wife?" He Lai Di couldn't help but feel excited when she saw that Li Hongmei didn't ignore her. It was good that this female soldier was willing to talk to her. If she was willing to talk, she could find out what she wanted to know. He Lai Di pondered to herself.

"No." Li Hongmei couldn't help but frown when she heard He Laidie talking about Zhao Yunxiang.
