"You are a hen that doesn't lay eggs. All you do is eat and sleep every day. You can't even lay an egg. What's the point of keeping you?" A sharp shout rang out from Su Niang's ears, accompanied by the "puff" sound of a wooden stick hitting the ground, the "flutter" sound of the chickens flying away in fear, and the "cluck" sound of the hens screaming.
Hiss! My head hurts!
Suniang opened her eyes and saw a dilapidated mud house. Beneath her was a hard wooden bed. The window was small and opened high, so the whole room seemed a little dim.
Who am I? Why am I here?
Su Niang was stunned.
Ever since she rolled down the hill two days ago, Su Niang felt a little strange. The question often popped up in her mind: "Who am I?"
Although everyone who saw her called her Suniang, she felt that her name was not Suniang. But who else could she be if not Suniang? The thought of this made Suniang's head ache again. It seemed that she had a concussion when she fell down the hill.
What is a concussion? Su Niang frowned, pondering for a long time, but couldn't recall where she'd heard the term. The village doctor? Impossible. This village was remote, surrounded by mountains, and there wasn't a doctor. Villagers went to the clinic in the town outside the mountains when they were sick. Of course, only serious illnesses were considered eligible. For a minor illness like Su Niang's, a fall from the mountain, she was usually kept at home for a few days. If she recovered, she would recover, otherwise, she'd be fined.
This is a small village with beautiful mountains and rivers, called Xiushui Village. Su Niang is a young wife of Xiushui Village. She is 23 years old this year and has been married to Xiushui Village for eight years.
Two days ago, Su Niang went up the mountain to collect firewood. She was carrying so much firewood that she lost sight of the path and slipped off a step, falling down the slope. Fortunately, other villagers were there, and Su Niang was rescued and taken back home. As Su Niang pondered, this information came to her mind.
Huh? How come girls here are getting married so young? She's only 15 years old, still a middle school student! This is so inhumane.
Su Niang's mind suddenly filled with unfamiliar words. Middle school student? Human rights? What on earth was this?
Su Niang's head started to hurt again, much more than before.
"Ah~!" Su Niang cried out softly. She really couldn't bear it anymore. Her head felt like it was splitting in pain.
Hearing Su Niang's cry of pain, the shouting and cursing outside the window stopped, and then the old woman's voice became even more harsh: "I am so miserable! I married a daughter-in-law who can't even give birth, and now I have to serve her in return! Oh, God, why don't you open your eyes and take this damn thing away!"
Now, even if Su Niang was dumb, she knew she was the daughter-in-law and the "hen that doesn't lay eggs" that the old woman outside the window was talking about. Damn it, how did she become such a tragic figure? Was it because she opened her eyes the wrong way?
Su Niang thought of this and immediately closed her eyes. Then she opened them again and looked at the same old shabby little mud house. Su Niang still didn't believe it and cruelly stretched out one hand to pinch her other arm.
"Shhh! It hurts!" Su Niang rubbed her arm, bruised from pinching herself. Tears welled up in her eyes. It looked like she wasn't dreaming. But why didn't she remember getting married? And what exactly was Xiushui Village?
Outside, the old woman's voice became even more shrill: "Oh my! This is outrageous! There's no way out! The daughter-in-law doesn't serve her mother-in-law, but lies in bed waiting for her to serve her. This is really outrageous!"
Before Su Niang could figure out what was going on, there was a loud bang and the dilapidated wooden door was pushed open with great force, hitting the wall with a loud noise.
"Su Niang, why don't you get up and do some work now that you're well? You're asking me to work hard for you. That's extremely unfilial!" A burly man walked into the room with his back to the light and yelled at Su Niang who was lying in a daze on the bed.
Su Niang narrowed her eyes and finally saw the man in front of her clearly.
The man looked to be more than ten years older than Su Niang. He had a full beard, a face full of flesh, and a short stature. When he looked at Su Niang, his slender eyes flashed with a hint of coldness. It was obvious that he was a very difficult person to deal with.
Li Wangcai, 38 years old, was a butcher and hunter from Xiushui Village, and Su Niang's husband. Looking at that man, Su Niang's mind inexplicably filled with more information.
Seeing Su Niang sitting on the bed staring at him blankly, the man's heart was filled with anger. He raised his eyebrows and rushed to the bed. He grabbed Su Niang's hair and dragged her out, cursing as he dragged her: "You stinky woman, you act like you don't understand when I ask you to do something. Damn it, I spent a tael of silver to marry a woman like you, and you can't even give birth to a child. It's such a loss."
He married a woman with one tael of silver. Am I really that worthless? Su Niang was astonished.
Su Niang was so stunned that she forgot to reach out to block Li Wangcai's hand. It wasn't until a sharp pain in her head that she regained consciousness. By then, Su Niang had been roughly dragged from the bed by Li Wangcai to the ground. From time to time, Su Niang felt a dull pain from the impact, and it was obvious that she had many bruises on her body.
Damn it! Are you looking for death? Su Niang was filled with anger. She hated men who hit women the most. When she came to her senses, this Li Wangcai was dead!
Although Su Niang was furious in her heart, she was too weak and had no strength at all, so she was dragged to the door by Li Wangcai in an instant.
"Let go!" Su Niang yelled. She was practically pissed off. She knew she had the power to defeat Li Wangcai, yet he treated her like a rag. What had happened to her? Had she become a weakling after a fall?
"Hey~! You bitch, you dare to talk back today? I'll see if you've grown bolder after not beating you for a few days?" Li Wangcai heard Su Niang's screams, but instead of stopping, he grabbed Su Niang's hair with one hand and slapped her in the face with the other hand, cursing: "You bitch, if you don't get punished for three days, you will be like a wreck. If I don't teach you a lesson today, do you really think you are someone you are? You can't do anything, and you even fell down the mountain while hugging firewood. What a damn bad luck."
The burning pain on her face fueled a fury in Su Niang's heart. Damn it! It's been years since I last got beaten up. Who the hell is this short, poor, and worthless guy? How dare he hit me? I'll kill him! Su Niang's mind began to overflow with confusing words, but she couldn't quite recall the meaning of the middle part.
