Even without An'an's urine as a reference point, Jingjing knew they were lost; she had already seen that bald tree at the intersection three times.
“We’re lost in a maze. Grandma says it’s easy to get lost in a maze when walking at night in the mountains.” An’an said solemnly.
Lin Shufang often told them folk tales, and the little ones, with their good memories, remembered them all.
"Grandma also said that if you encounter a ghost wall, you should wash your eyes with a child's urine so that you won't be blinded by ghosts," An'an added.
He was extremely interested in these fantasy stories; Jingjing had almost forgotten them all, but he remembered them very well.
Jingjing scratched her scalp hard. She was at a loss. If she were more powerful, she could make the trees on the mountain guide her, but she didn't have that ability yet.
"You need to pee now."
Jingjing couldn't think of a solution, so she had to use her younger brother's suggestion. Grandma's words shouldn't be wrong, right?
An'an looked troubled. "I just finished peeing, but I can't pee now."
He urinated all the urine he was holding in so he could make a mark, and now there's not a single drop left.
"Would mine work?" Jingjing did have one.
“Of course not, Grandma says it’s a boy’s urine. Only a boy with a penis can be a virgin. You don’t have a penis.” An’an puffed out his chest, looking smug. He was a boy, after all.
Jingjing angrily slapped him on the head and yelled, "Hurry up and pee!"
"I can't pee," An'an said, troubled.
"Hold it in!"
Jingjing yelled again, and An'an, afraid of her, had no choice but to secretly hold her pee to the side. But An'an, who usually felt the urge to pee very often, couldn't hold it in tonight no matter how hard she tried.
"I want to drink water." An'an licked her dry lips; she was so thirsty.
Jingjing, with a stern face, found a few leaves on a nearby hillside and handed them to An'an, saying, "Chew on these."
She was in such a hurry to leave that she forgot to bring water, but she was able to find edible plants that could both satisfy her hunger and quench her thirst – a win-win situation.
An An made a face and shook his head in resistance. He wasn't a rabbit and didn't want to eat grass at all. Besides, these leaves were bitter and didn't taste good at all. He would rather be thirsty.
"Eat it! If you don't eat it, where will the pee come from? Hurry up!"
Jingjing stuffed a handful of leaves into An'an's mouth, and chewed a few herself. The taste was indeed not good, not as good as the vegetable salad that Grandma made. However, she still ate it in big mouthfuls, and pretended to enjoy it, setting an example for An'an.
"These leaves are delicious this time, eat them quickly."
An'an's face fell even more. His sister had lied again. It didn't taste good at all. But if he didn't eat it, his sister would definitely beat him. Poor An'an had no choice but to chew and swallow the leaves in his mouth, leaving his mouth full of grassy taste.
"Have you peed yet?"
After a while, Jingjing urged him again. An'an shook his head with a bitter face. He felt a little nauseous, his stomach hurt a little, and his mouth tasted like grass. He wanted to eat meat, chocolate, and milk... He could even eat stir-fried vegetables, just don't let him eat grass anymore.
Jingjing continued to go up the mountain to pick leaves, plucking a handful here and a handful there, and came back with a bunch of all kinds of leaves. An'an's little face was all scrunched up; he really didn't want to eat grass anymore.
"Sister, do you have any fruit?"
An'an ate another small pile of leaves, but she really couldn't eat anymore. Her chest felt even more nauseous, and her stomach hurt even more, but it was still within her tolerance, so An'an didn't take it to heart.
All he wants now is to eat some sweet fruit to rinse his mouth and get rid of the grassy taste.
