Mao Fangfei was surprised that Ruan Lizong had actually been fired by the company. When Ye Qingqing mentioned it before, she didn't quite believe it. After all, Ruan Lizong was a favorite of the Chinese boss, and apart from his poor character, he was indeed very capable. She thought that the boss would not fire such a smart and capable subordinate over a trivial matter as divorce.
But the truth is, Ruan Lizong went bankrupt just as he got the house and savings. When Mao Fangfei found out, it took her a long time to come to her senses. Of course, she wasn't stupid, and she quickly figured it out.
The next day, after class, Mao Fangfei asked Ye Qingqing to go to the lotus lake. Just a month later, the lotus flowers in the lake had grown much taller and stood gracefully, some of them even sprouting pink and white buds.
"You're the one who told the boss to fire Ruan Lizong, aren't you?"
Mao Fangfei used a definitive tone; she couldn't think of any other reason besides this possibility.
Ye Qingqing laughed, "I don't have that ability. I just happen to know that scumbag boss, and I have a pretty good relationship with his son."
Mao Fangfei looked at her gratefully, feeling a warmth in her heart. This divorce had made her understand a lot. Before, she had lived in a daze, without hope or the desire to dream about the future, just going through the motions.
She used to think that her parents' teachings were right, and that it would be nice to live a life like them. But now she has realized something.
She didn't like the rigid teaching job at all; she wanted to rekindle her old dreams, but she was afraid.
After all, she's not young anymore.
"Thank you. You are younger than me, but you understand life better than I do," Mao Fangfei said with deep emotion.
She admired Ye Qingqing's open and clear-headed attitude towards life. She had extraordinary abilities at such a young age, and she saw things very clearly. Her network of connections also seemed impressive, since her good friends were all the sons of big companies!
Ye Qingqing chuckled to herself. She had lived two lives; if she didn't understand, wouldn't her previous life have been a waste?
“Teacher, you were indeed a bit confused before, but it’s never too late to mend your ways. You can still correct yourself now,” Ye Qingqing advised.
Mao Fangfei laughed self-deprecatingly, "It's too late, I'm too old, and I'll never have the chance to realize my dreams."
For some reason, she suddenly wanted to confide her troubles to Ye Qingqing. No one at home would listen to her, and she would definitely be scolded if she told her parents. Her parents had decided on her teaching job because they thought it was the most noble and stable profession, and that being a teacher was the most suitable job for a girl.
Her parents were quite unhappy with her about the divorce, saying she went too far. After all, they were husband and wife, and there was no need to be so cruel. Now, people outside are saying that the Mao family is greedy and bullies their son-in-law from the countryside, taking away all the hard-earned money he made.
Her older siblings also had opinions about her. Only her sister-in-law was on her side, telling her not to pay attention to the gossip. She said some people were just jealous because she got divorced and became a rich and beautiful woman.
Although Mao Fangfei had figured things out, she still felt uncomfortable hearing those rumors, and her family's lack of understanding also made her feel exhausted. After holding it in for so many days, she suddenly wanted to talk to someone, otherwise she felt she would suffocate.
Ye Qingqing could see the bitterness in her heart. It was only the 1990s. Even in a metropolis like Pingjiang, divorce was not a glorious thing. Unlike twenty years later, when divorce could be celebrated with a banquet!
Moreover, the Mao family members are definitely die-hard conservatives, so it's no wonder Mao Fangfei couldn't be happy in such an atmosphere.
