Professor Hu and Elder Ye looked rather grim; this was the first time they had ever heard of cannibalism. It seemed they would have to be extra careful on this trip.
Professor Hu whispered to Ye Yunxi.
“Yunxi, if we encounter any danger, then your master and I will have to rely on you guys to protect us.”
Ye Yunxi raised an eyebrow and said.
"Don't worry, we will ensure your and Master's safety. If you encounter any danger, just hide in a safe place with Qingqing."
After Ye Yunxi and the others finished speaking with Elder Ye and the others, they dispersed and went about their own business.
Team Leader Li and his group ate porridge made from compressed biscuits, with some dehydrated vegetables added.
Ye Yunxi and the others didn't dare to eat anything with strong flavors here. She took out rice balls from her backpack and shared them with Gu Qingqing and the others.
Gu Qingqing and the others didn't stand on ceremony. They took the rice ball, took out a can of food from their backpacks, opened it, and fed it to Yunzi. They also took out sausages and two more cans of food, which they shared.
Ye Yunxi and the others didn't stand on ceremony. After they finished eating, Fu Heng took out a small bag of fruit candies from his backpack and handed it to Gu Qingqing and the others. It was considered payment for them opening the canned food for Yunzi.
Gu Qingqing smiled as she accepted the fruit candy and thanked her.
"Thank you, Brother Heng and Sister Yunxi."
Gu Qingqing carefully put the fruit candy into her backpack. She couldn't bear to eat it; it was so precious to her now.
After Ye Yunxi and the others set up the tent, they went inside to rest. Gu Qingqing and Zhang Haiyi kept watch for the first half of the night, while Ye Yunxi and Fu Heng slept, and they switched places for the second half.
It's past eight o'clock now, and Ye Yunxi and Fu Heng are making the most of their time to go to sleep.
Time flew by, and soon it was past 1 a.m. Ye Yunxi and the others took over for Gu Qingqing and the others to sleep.
They took the night watch, and nothing happened that night; they slept soundly until dawn.
Some soldiers started getting up and preparing breakfast. Then, gradually, more people got up.
Ye Yunxi and the others also took out their toiletries, went out to find a place to wash up, and then came back to make breakfast.
After they finished breakfast, the person in charge of the base came to find Li Yan and the others to discuss something.
Then, Li Yan spoke loudly to all of them.
"Everyone, pack up and wait where you are. We'll be right back."
Then Li Yan walked towards Ye Yunxi and the others.
"Yunxi, Fuheng, the four of you come with me and Team Leader Fang to meet the base commander, Professor Hu, and Elder Ye. Their base commander wants to meet our leader, and I was thinking of asking you guys to come with us."
Fu Heng and the others nodded, and after tidying up briefly, they followed Li Yan and Elder Ye to meet the base director with the base manager.
They arrived at the base at night yesterday and couldn't see its entirety. Now they can see it clearly; the base looks like it's been abandoned for a long time, consisting of several large factory buildings, each with three floors, and a large building, presumably the offices.
There is a grove of trees behind the base, but I don't know how big it is.
A few minutes later, the base leader led them to the building, up to the sixth floor, to a room. The base leader knocked gently, opened the door, and invited them in.
Then they saw the private base manager stand up and walk towards them, greeting them with a smile.
"Please, everyone, have a seat here. I apologize for the poor hospitality; the place is a bit dirty and messy."
Ye Yunxi and a few other young people stood behind the sofa. Professor Hu, Elder Ye, and Captain Li and his team sat on the sofa.
The base commander said to them with a smile.
"My name is Liu Dayong. I am the base manager of this base, and I am in charge of this small base."
The base commander was of average appearance, wore glasses, and was slightly overweight.
Li Yan introduced them to Liu Dayong.
"Professor Hu, Elder Ye, Fang Dui, Ye Yunxi, Fu Heng, Gu Qingqing, Zhang Haiyi, just call me Li Yan."
Liu Dayong smiled and nodded. He shook hands with each of them. Then he got down to business.
"I've come to you today because I need your help. Although this is a private base, recently some people have been mysteriously disappearing, making life unbearable for the people in the base."
My investigation revealed a cave in the woods behind the mountain, inhabited by monsters. We suspect that the people missing from the base were captured by those monsters.
I told the people at the base to stay indoors as much as possible, but their zealots were unavoidable; some always went out and never came back.
Professor Hu listened to Liu Dayong's words and looked at him, asking a question.
"Chief Liu, did you call us here to help you eliminate those monsters?"
Liu Dayong was a little embarrassed, and then straightened up and said.
"Yes, we had no other choice but to ask you for help. We sent a team to investigate before, but they never came back."
Old Ye voiced the question that had been lingering in his mind.
"Does the base commander know what they look like?"
Liu Dayong thought for a moment and said, "They are covered in hair, have big eyes, and fangs. They roar when they see people. They are especially terrifying."
Ye Yunxi asked Liu Dayong coldly.
"If that's the case, then why didn't you move away from here when you encountered man-eating monsters, and instead continued to live here?"
A hint of murderous intent flashed in Liu Dayong's eyes, but he quickly recovered and spoke with difficulty.
“We’ve gotten used to living here. If we leave, we don’t know where to go.”
Ye Yunxi and Fu Hengpu quickly noticed the murderous intent in Liu Dayong's eyes. They exchanged a glance and decided to hold back for now and see what tricks Liu Dayong was up to.
Team Leader Li then spoke up. "After you leave here, you can go to our base. Our base is very large and can accommodate many people. Food, clothing, shelter, and transportation are all earned through individual labor."
