When the man saw the patrolling soldiers approaching, he quickly told his men to put down their weapons.
The patrolling soldier walked from the back of the car to the window, turned around, and saw that the people inside were Ye Yunxi and Fu Heng. He nodded to them.
"Long time no see. Yunxi, Fuheng."
Ye Yunxi and Fu Heng never expected that the soldier patrolling nearby was actually He Yidong.
Over the past two years, they have gotten along fairly well. Although He Yidong used to flirt with her frequently in her office, he never did anything out of line, and she even knew that she had a boyfriend.
After rescuing Captain Li during the rescue mission last year, his opinion of Ye Yunxi and the others changed. Later, he even took bullets for them and was seriously injured.
After returning to the base, He Yidong no longer treated her the way he did before the apocalypse, teasing her or pursuing her. Instead, he treated her as a friend, helping her whenever needed.
He knew that Fu Heng was more suitable than him, and he could also see that Fu Heng was not an ordinary person, so he put aside his feelings and treated Ye Yunxi and Fu Heng as friends, no longer enemies.
However, it wasn't exactly a long time since they last saw each other; it had only been about a week. They had seen each other once after the last snake plague, and hadn't seen each other since.
Ye Yunxi and Fu Heng greeted him with smiles.
"Long time no see. Are you patrolling around here today?"
He Yidong smiled and said, "Yes, I've been patrolling around here these past few days. If you need anything, you can come to me. By the way, what are you doing here? Did something happen? I heard gunshots over here, so I came over."
Ye Yunxi turned to look at the man and smiled at He Yidong.
"Hey! The people up ahead aren't planning to let us go home; they're threatening us here. Deputy Captain He, what do you think we should do?"
He Yidong turned to look at the man and asked him seriously.
"You tell me, what happened?"
The man spoke to He Yidong with trembling hands and great respect.
“Deputy Captain He, this couple killed our family member. We are here to demand compensation from them.”
How could He Yidong believe a man's words? How could Ye Yunxi and Fu Heng possibly kill someone else's family so easily?
"Then tell me again, how did this couple kill your family members?"
Without a second thought, the man recounted to He Yidong the incident where a snake had killed his family members. He also embellished the story, describing how Ye Yunxi and Fu Heng had stood by and watched his family die.
And what about the compensation Ye Yunxi and the others promised them? How did they fail to deliver it? How did they lie to them, leading to their violent actions and the death of several of the man's brothers?
He Yidong's face grew darker and darker as he listened to the man blame all the wrongdoings on Ye Yunxi and Fu Heng.
After the man finished pointing out Ye Yunxi and the others' mistakes, he made a solemn vow.
"Deputy Captain He, that's the truth. I'm telling you the facts. If you don't believe me, ask them."
He Yidong couldn't possibly do what the men said, and he was too lazy to ask them. Although he arrived late that day, he knew that Ye Yunxi and Fu Heng had saved their villa area; otherwise, there would have been even more dead and injured people.
"As far as I know, if it weren't for them saving you and your families, you would have been killed by snakes long ago. Not only are you ungrateful, but you're also spouting nonsense, saying they're the ones who killed your families. Have you no conscience?"
Furthermore, what right do you have to stop them? And why do you want compensation? Did they promise you anything? Not only did they not offer you any compensation, but even if they did, you don't deserve it.
The man became somewhat angry upon hearing He Yidong's tone.
"Deputy Captain He, you can't say things like that. What do you mean we don't deserve it? They killed people and they should pay with their lives. That's only right. Look, there are still a few of my brothers lying on the ground. Are you saying this is the end of it?"
If you continue to speak favorably of them, I'll tell your Captain Li to come and judge the matter.
He Yidong scoffed. "It's no use whoever you bring. With your behavior, who would speak well of you? You attempted murder, then blackmailed the homeowner for compensation, and used the death of a family member to prevent the homeowner from returning home. All of this was done by you."
"I can take you all straight to the jail for a thorough interrogation. Men, take this man, his men, and all those others back to the jail so Captain Li and Captain Fang can interrogate them properly."
When the group heard He Yidong order them to be taken to jail, they panicked and kept shouting.
"We were wrong, we will never do it again, please let us go."
The soldiers immediately stepped forward and arrested all the troublemakers.
Ignoring their shouts, He Yidong turned and smiled at Ye Yunxi and the others.
"Alright, the matter is resolved. I'm leaving now. Take these people back to the jail and interrogate them properly."
Ye Yunxi smiled with satisfaction.
"Then thank you, Deputy Captain He."
He Yidong smiled, bid farewell to Ye Yunxi and Fu Heng, and led a group of people toward the base's prison.
Fu Heng and the others then drove home. After resting for a while, they went to the space to have dinner with Yun Zixuanyu.
After finishing their meal, they stayed in the space for a while and took a shower. After leaving the space, the two went upstairs, closed the sunshade curtains, watched TV for a while, and then went to sleep.
For half a month, snakes kept coming to the base and harassing the residents. At first, they were afraid and terrified, but then they started using tools to catch the snakes.
During the two weeks of catching snakes, the base discovered that some snakes are edible and some are not.
The base hadn't had any meat for a long time, so they came up with a solution: they put up a sign in the center of the rented houses indicating which snakes were edible and which were not.
